4gb RAM

128gb SSD

Looks like a nice laptop

Seems good enough spec for the price

-Intel® Core™ i3-6100U Processor

OP says "Seems good enough spec for the price" but conveniently left out details of possibly the most important component.

I agree, whilst you pay more for the nice thin architecture the storage isn't great and 4gb only acceptable. The next equivalent mac book air is 4gb ram 250 gb storage and i5(turbo boost) processor but price is is around £800.

Picard123
28 Oct 16 #15
It doesn't come with dedicated graphics if that's what you're referring to. Its the UX310UQ model that comes with the 940MX (DDR3 though, no DDR5 version) and that version isn't officially available in the UK. This is the integrated graphics UA version with TN panel.

This also supposedly has a standard 2.5" SSD/HDD bay AND an M.2 slot and you can can supposedly occupy both at the same time which is a nice touch if true: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/asus-zenbook-ux310uq-does-the-m-2-slot-support-pcie-ssd.796362/

The only thing I don't like about the 305 (I assume this machine is similar) is the keyboard - key travel is very shallow (though if you come from the Macbook 12, it will probably feel like a traditional mechanical scissor switch keyboard.....)

I bought an XPS13 from Dell Outlet last year and I'd have no hesitation in buying one of those again over this, even if it does mean ponying up the extra ££s. The form factor is just superb and it comes in at a lighter weight.

I sold my 2009 MacBook Pro, expecting to upgrade to one of the newly released ones but don't think I can justify the price. Is this a downgrade? I like the look/feel etc but don't want it to start running slow after a couple of months as my MacBook Pro was still going pretty strong after 7 years!
Any input welcome, thanks
fish323 to riccirus
29 Oct 16 2 #32
I looked at this computer along with a host of ultrabooks and after reading all the reviews on Amazon.com went for a 2015 Mac Air. I am happy I went for the Mac Air but it is slow, I mean really, really slow for an i5 Broadwell processor. My 5 year old 1st Gen i5 Dell XPS is as fast. I forgive it, its snail like speed for the unreal battery life, the light weight and build quality. If you need speed stay as far away as possible from Mac Airs. When you go to amazon.com read the bad reviews first to get an idea of what can go wrong.
Eez1

These 6th gen i3's run super close to the i5's. It's just turbo boost its missing far as I remember. 8gigs of RAM would've been spot on

Thanks for your advice. Was thinking of getting a MacBook Air instead as a compromise but will think again now you've said that! I know I'd be happy with the performance of a new MacBook Pro but just can't justify the price for the mostly basic tasks I would use it for.

Expensive for those specs. Seriously, you guys need to check out PC specialist. I built an awesome laptop for £500 with an i5, 250GB SSD and 8GB RAM.
plewis00 to aouttandy
29 Oct 16 #41
You're obviously paying more for this for the brand, design and chassis quality. PC Specialist are fine but I bet that £500 didn't include Windows, depreciation is massive and even a basic warranty is extra (unless you're happy with 30 days on the Bronze one)? I have an Optimus V gaming laptop from them but I'm not going to pretend it's anything like as desirable as a Razer or Alienware.
Macdory to aouttandy
29 Oct 16 1 #44
The premium price is because of the slim design - did your custom built laptop look as good?

I'm all for getting the best components and sticking them in a box without worrying what it looks like for my desktop, but I like my laptops to look great - especially as I only use them for Office/Internet ... use the desktop for anything meaty.
greatcapp to aouttandy
31 Oct 16 #64
You rate PCSpecialist highly?

We are using those at work and whilst the specs are quite nice, the quality of build is dreadful. Cheap plasticy casing and has the worst speakers I've ever heard on a laptop. They cost nearly £1000 each too, so weren't cheap. My iPhone speakers are far better quality & much louder. Maybe our IT guy just bought the wrong ones, but I'd certainly never buy one.

29 Oct 16 #42
any alternatives for the price?
haritori
29 Oct 16 1 #43
Why is everyone obsessed with these needed more than 4GB of Ram?

Seriously this isn't a gaming machine, nor will you be processing video on an i3 so 4GB of RAM is ample.
Agharta to haritori
29 Oct 16 #47
No it's not if you multi-task and especially if you have a lot of browser tabs open.
plewis00 to haritori
30 Oct 16 #52
I'm more surprised that everyone is getting in a flap over i3 vs i5, given they're the same physical processing core with Turbo Boost disabled on one. I guess it's for bragging rights because in the real world it makes little difference.

As to the RAM it's probably the same people making noise over basic tablets having only 1 or 2GB, e.g. they've never actually used them themselves.

Whatever happened to the Asus Zenbook 3 that was slated for release around August time??
Picard123 to itm2

Love the light weight but the problem that I can foresee with that laptop is the lack of key travel. Same problem as the Macbook 12 (which has an even worse keyboard). Both are like typing on flat table....
Agharta
29 Oct 16 #46
Is that the new 7th generation version which is particularly friendly? What will those marketing people think of next!
aouttandy
29 Oct 16 #48
To be fair, the you can get a windows key off ebay for about £5. 128gb ssd and that i3 is just not worth it for that kind of money. I'm sure you can find those specs for a much cheaper price on laptopsdirect or something.

Looks a lot like a MacBook... Still we'll have the apple hate force banging on about Apple like a jealous ex.
furi0n
29 Oct 16 2 #50
Several comments here clearly indicate folk don't seem to understand the target market segment (priority is portability, lightweight and compact) for this notebook or its direct competitor.

This notebook is a Macbook Air alternative, when you compare these side by side you should realise how good value this is, a entry level Macbook Air is twice the cost of this albeit with a better cpu and more ram. However, the biggest let - down is the low resolution screen @ 1440 * 900

I'd buy this, the build quality is on par, with a 1080p screen and decent cpu and fam with the option to both upgrade the ram and add additional SSD drive at a future time, half the cost - is definitely the better buy.
haritori to furi0n
30 Oct 16 #54
I agree with you, but MacBook Air base spec is 4GB of LDDR3 as well, also the i5 is a Sandybridge vs the i3 Skylake so the i3 outperforms the i5 in all benchmarks.
jonnypb
29 Oct 16 2 #51
Yes for similar money you can get a better spec laptop but people are missing the point. This is an ultrabook, light and portable. It's not for everyone so if you want a higher spec laptop, bigger and much heavier then look elsewhere. If you want an ultrabook then this is a good option.
haritori
30 Oct 16 #53
Well that depends on your browser, and if you use tab suspension, then 4GB will be like I say ample, Chrome now has a memory solution, but thats more for devices with less than 1GB of Ram, I think you will find with 4GB you would need to open a fair few tabs, or here is an idea open less?
scottkirk1
30 Oct 16 #56
Techradar give this laptop a very high score in their review. Shop around and you will find it cheaper. A few on ebay as refurb direct from asus cheaper. They usually don't have a backlit keyboard. Not sure about this model.

Picked up a ux32a with i5 at Asda clearance a few years ago now. Took the 500gb drive out for an SSD from a deal here but haven't bothered upping the ram. Great piece of kit even more so as I paid £125 ex display and about £70 for the SSD. These days though the only draw back is the lack of touchscreen
Picard123
30 Oct 16 #58
But the equivalent spec on PC specialist is more expensive is it not?
