Dunno about Southampton, but Arsenal will probably put out Giroud, The Ox, Gabriel, Gibbs, Elneny, Iwobi, Jenkinson plus a couple of other fringe players and a couple of kids. So not exactly reserves or unknowns.

In the past Wenger would have put out a team almost entirely made up of kids in this Cup, that's not really the case now.

The only way I would go to the Emirates is if Piers Morgan was placed in a set of medieval stocks and there was a raffle for fans in the crowd to win the chance to throw 5kg weights at his smug smirking face.

Same fixture went on general sale two years ago (3rd round) so can't see why it wouldn't again. Heat.

BTW get there a bit early. Missed the first 20 minutes on Tuesday due to really long queues of 25 mins or more.
Chef_uk
30 Oct 16 1 #12
The queues were due to the new tag a bag scheme. We were an hour early getting in and even then it took 15 minutes instead of the previous 2. That said, security is a must and I'm sure it will be tweaked to help speed up entrance.

Not a fan of either team, but wanted to throw out a question........ these sort of offers are probably indicative of a lack of demand at normal prices, so does that mean -
a) prices are generally too high for many premiership teams whatever the game
b) this is not the most popular competition unless it's the final
c) gooners might manage to get European football again next season, so fans are picking their games
d) money's tight everywhere
e) when stadiums get more capacity, there's often empty seats in certain games for a while

I think it's a bit of all of them, but be interested to hear opinions - many years ago this competition struggled to get good crowds anywhere as I remember, especially when fans were saving up for foreign trips, so perhaps nothing has changed much after all.
Talbs14 to kamenitzabrit
30 Oct 16 #26
No this competition are always these prices at Arsenal games as it's not a priority and if Arsenal won't put their strongest 11 out then they won't charge full price. Good chance for kids and non-season ticket holder to go
Chef_uk to kamenitzabrit
30 Oct 16 1 #28
The majority of this competition is played at night during the winter months. Demand therefore will ease up on these games more than any other. As the extra game is not factored into the expected ticket sales, they can choose any price they like. Most clubs will stick to their normal pricing and just take a hit on the tickets sold whereas Arsenal prefer a full stadium so to give the fringe players more of an occasion/to give the youngsters a taste of what's to come. I also suspect it helps the club argue with the media for when it comes to being reported on as having the highest season ticket costs of any club, they can argue back as to having the cheapest ticket price too.
Immoraliste to kamenitzabrit
31 Oct 16 1 #33
League cup games aren't included within the season ticket (season tickets include 7 cup credits for first 7 CL and FA Cup games), so there are 60,000 seats to sell, instead of <15,000 for PL and CL/FA cup credit games.

Demand for the 15,000 seats to watch the first team play in the PL massively outstrips supply, so Silver members will buy the 11,500 tickets available to them (60-30 days pre-game) and Red members will buy their 3,500 guaranteed allocation in minutes (30 days pre-game). Nothing will ever go to general sale.

With the league cup, you have to factor in that both sides will field largely reserve teams and that the games are on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in winter, and you're going to struggle to sell 60,000 seats at usual Arsenal prices (Southampton would be Category B, so £50+ a seat for upper tier).

As evidence that many people can't be bothered to go to mid-week games, compare Met Police attendance stats (fans through turnstiles) for CL group games to Arsenal attendance stats (tickets sold). There are always 60,000 tickets sold, but in general only 50,000 through the turnstiles for the 'less fashionable' CL group games. They should put their tickets on the TicketExchange, but probably can't be bothered, either. That's London for you!

Thanks for the detailed reply - it makes it all easily understood at a glance !
I suppose also, that some season ticket holders will live outside London, and so don't always travel to mid week games, neither can they sell their tickets easily or safely to avoid losing it through disorder.
When I was travelling home and away to a London team many years ago, including pre-season foreign trips (those were the days, no children and spare cash only for me), it amazed me that some fans were also doing friendlies to places like Hong Kong, and they were not city stockbrokers, so how they could afford it ? Most said they loved the camaraderie on away trips, as it was usually smallish groups of friends who used to stand on terraces together, without the muppets who only went to the biggest games or never travelled away.
I know some went to Thailand and financed the trip by bringing back clothing to sell, in the days before ebay of course, but I could never get my head around the seemingly vast difference in 'spending money' between London and other parts of the UK, not just deprived areas either.
Anyway, thanks again for the information, and I hope everyone enjoys the game.

It is because Spurs couldn't fill Wembley in the CL so it's a bit different as Arsenal always charge this price for the League Cup. CL football is supposed to be the pinnacle and yet Tottenham, who have made a big deal about building the biggest club ground in London, can't fill Wembley with normal prices for the CL. Arsenal CL home prices start from £36.50 cheapest adult seat compared to the £20 Spurs were charging. If you can't see the difference then I don't think anyone can help with that...

Great deal to see quality football, good chance for families to go at great prices. From ahem.... a toon fan.
barbiegirl
31 Oct 16 1 #41
No, that's not quite right. What happened is, Spurs had a CL game (which they lost) against Monaco. Loads of mouthy Spurs fans started to bang on about how they can fill Wembley because they're the biggest team in North London or some other customary claim they like to make. At which point most people (ergo a lot of Gooners too) pointed out that most teams could fill Wembley at such low ticket prices and that it wasn't something that stood up to that level of bragging.

I laughed out loud when I saw this in the OP "Cheap trip to one of best stadiums in the country, chance to maybe visit a new stadium or just to watch a game of football while in the area"

The emirates has to be one of the worst stadiums to watch football in, the atmosphere is laughable their own fans you don't here a peep from all game. It's a contest between West Ham since they've moved and Arsenal for **** stadium in the PL. Even Arseanl fans are happy with the foreign tourists and plastics just buying a ticket just to see them a one off and make no noise and the floods of empty seats 15 minutes before the match finishes you see every week play instead of actual proper football fans.
madcap
31 Oct 16 #43
Great price to watch 2 Premier League teams in a competitive match at a beautiful stadium. This, coming from a Palace fan. No one likes to see empty seats, so well done Arsenal.

Anyone who says otherwise is deluded, jealous or simply doesn't like Arsenal.
hello55060
31 Oct 16 1 #44
If you want some food and drink at the Emirates be warned you will have to pay more than the price of the ticket for a pint and fish and chips so bring your own food along. Arsenal sold out their club the second it was the Emirates, feel bad for the actual fans who used to go to Highbury. Here will mainly be younger fans who won't rememeber much about Arsenal or only supported them because they had the invincibles but older fans are not happy with the way Arsenal are advertised as more a brand than a football club now.
kaplonk
31 Oct 16 #45
I only ever see gooners saying it, other fans were quite rightly praising. Arsenal can't even sell out the Emirates at 30k capacity less, sell out for a couple of games a season is my guess because every week there are massive patches of red seats in worlds quietest stadium. Lucky they're sponsored by Emirates because I imagine that's where all their tourist fans come from.

My team, Liverpool, sold out Wembley for a pre season friendly game in August. I paid £65 for a mid priced ticket so not exactly a bargain either. Didn't see many Barca fans either, it was virtually all reds in all ends of the stadium. 89,845 in total. Just 29 seats short of it's modern record.

31 Oct 16 #50
Yes couldn't fill Wembley at normal prices, hence why they dropped an adult ticket to £20 (and also a Groupon offer) and filled it with anyone willing to go. So it is completely different as I said. They could not fill Wembley with their normal fan base at normal prices so it went on sale to anyone at £20.

You're not wrong - but it's no different for most of the major Prem teams these days. Football has moved on from being a supporter-lead sport to a purely commercial one for the likes of Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal. Much less so for the smaller clubs that don't have the Europe / CL track records or the international following.
But you can't really blame Arsenal. They had to build a bigger stadium to boost gate receipts to try and stay competitive once the likes of Roman rocked up with their billions. It's so often adapt or die in these highly competitive commercial scenarios.

Personally, I'm watching with interest what is happening to the paid TV market which is what is driving the PL. The fragmentation by BT Sport getting in on the act, combined with the drop in knowledge required to watch football online, the ever increasing quality of streams and the prevalence of android boxes that put those streams onto your television rather than a PC monitor, and you can imagine a scenario where the amount BSkyB and BT have bid for the rights will soon start to have a negative ROI for them. That's when Prem football might (just might) start to return to a more supporter led affair.

Your team looking very good going forward this season. Not so sure about the defence. Coutinho would walk straight into any PL team IMO. Terrific player.

Everything this member says is spot on, A combination of having 60,000 tickets to sell and a combination of fringe and youth players means they always sell at this price,

I imagine the majority of season ticket holders don't bother attending these fixtures which makes me laugh as if we got to the final at Wembley they would be the first ones wanting to go,

Also a lot of these game in my opinion are still a fantastic game to watch, Back up and youth players wanting to make an impression on the manager to get in the first team etc, After all a football match at any level or standard can still be a great game to watch with lesser known players, just as a game with lots of "Superstars" can be absolutely shocking like Liverpool & Man Utd a few weeks back.
BigPro
31 Oct 16 #59
Yes I went to that, it was Arsenal v Chelsea.

Although it is not going to be first team, as only the league cup, it is still Arsenal and well worth going if you get the chance for this price. Also the Emirates is an amazing stadium
BigPro
31 Oct 16 #60
You must be joking, you can't be serious? The Emirates is arguably the best Premier League stadium in the country, and one of the best in the world. The atmosphere is great, although places like Anfield/Nou Camp/German stadiums are louder.

There aren't many people leaving before the last 15 minutes. You will get the odd few leaving earlier to beat the traffic, but that is the same in every stadium.
soldierboy001

I think you answered your own post.
hello55060
31 Oct 16 #62
You've obviously never been to the Emirates, I've been in the away end 3 times there now.
They even did a test a few seasons back out of all the stadiums in the PL and the emirates was ranked the quietest -lowest amount of decibels stadium in the PL taking into account the capacity and noise produced. Liverpool as much as I dislike them won it with iirc and United were pretty high up there.

Maybe it sounds different from your end watching the games on your sofa and listening to your surround sound.

Well I think you will find you are wrong actually, unless you are disputing Sky' quarterly financial results, which post record revenues and profits for their TV business. But of course you must have "hidden" in depth knowledge of the "true" situation I guess?
hello55060
31 Oct 16 #69
Try over £20.

And for the guy who asked BigPro, I'm a watford fan.

Emirates atmosphere is terrible, if you don't acknowledge that, then you're deluded. Yes, it may be a great experience for the plastic I'm sure they do a really nice stadium tour as well for you lol

Edit: I go to home and away games, I've been to pretty much all the PL stadiums well the regular PL teams not the newly promoted ones and Emirates was the quietest support from home fans I've encountered on my 3 trips. Yes, the chairs are nice and it's all fancy dancy but I'm talking about atmosphere.

Let me guess you're an Arsenal fan? No need to ask really it's pretty obvious from the denial.
arsenalmorris
31 Oct 16 #70
I will agree with the above comments. Atmosphere is usually awful with the exception of the really big games,

I also have been all the Prem grounds with Arsenal bar 2 and I generally think all the big clubs home support isn't great, you generally get more noise from the smaller clubs, Palace. Swansea, Stoke etc

Although I think this is largely down to the bigger clubs having there fans who like to sing / chant etc scattered around rather than in a group together so it's harder to generate the noise.

However Arsenal's away support is class. I would go as far as to say the best or one of the best around

Good article. Quote:

That's why the news that Sky's (LSE: SKY) viewer numbers for Premiership football this season are down 19% and BT's (LSE: BT.A) Champions League viewing has been down by as much as 40% have caused consternation with media companies and a dollop of schadenfreude from viewers tired of paying £80 a month to watch football.

Subscribers are indeed up but viewing figures are down. There's going to be a lag between the decline in viewing and decline in subscribers, naturally.

It really is simple why the crowd are quiet. Fans go to be entertained, if they aren't being entertained by what they see on the pitch, they make noise to fill in this gap. It's got nothing to do with passion or who supports a team more than anyone else. That's the stuff of the school ground.
