What do you mean by that? this phone came out nearly six and a half years ago and it's still pretty useable if your needs are basic. It's a lot more useable than many other phones of the same age.

Honestly you wont find another iPhone 4 in pristine condition like this again unless you want to pay more on ebay.

It's gone up to £49.99 now.

I wanted to throw up after reading some of the retarded comments on here.

This is an amazing "back to basics" offer. Somebody who needs a "like new" phone that will just do that, receive texts and call.

I've purchased this handset only becuase I want to keep it so I can show my kids what one of the first iPhones looked like. It comes with iOS6 installed and I suggest against upgrading to iOS7 because that will slow down the handset dramatically. Also there are plenty of settings one can toggle to speed it up. iOS6 is just fine, the phone is really usable as is - do not upgrade if you wish to use it still.

Sure thing you can't install any apps on it but it does come with built ones that are just enough to serve your basic needs. in fact I set it up as a new phone and was able to sync my safari favourites, notes, email, shared pictures etc. Even safari browser still works great with various websites, sure it is a little slow to actually load pages becuase it only is 2.5GHz wi-fi but what the hell.

This is a great piece of "memorabilia" if you will and is in like new state, sure there are few blemishes here and there but it does look new.

Your kids will thank you one day for this. Heck if you wait 30-50 years this might even cost a lot more than £40

Little else works , I could not even use Apples own Podcast player or any third party podcast players , the one that I bought on ebay was described as a iphone 4s , a 4s is upto IOS 9.x , but a iphone 4 is stuck on IOS 7 , honestly it is not worth buying......put 40.00 into a cheap android phone.....

Right, I personally would take a 2016 model Skoda with 0 milage and no mechanical issues. Over a 2010 audi with 150,000 on the clock, mechanical issues and audi refusing to support the car anymore . Not to mention the superior mod cons in the Skoda , oh and it's cheaper , oh and it just does more ..*

Yeah, good analogy buddy

Sounds fine. I assume they come with an O2 pay as you go sim? Not sure whether you could skip that step and activate with the giffgaff sim.

Before you throw away the o2 sim you might want to use it to activate o2 priority.
john_forster
25 Oct 16 #203
Just ordered 2 for my kids. Apologies for my ignorance but I'm not great with mobile tech. As giffgaff is on o2 network I read the giffgaff sims should work even if locked to o2. If I want to put them on giffgaff, do I just activate the phones with the o2 sim, then swap the sim out for a giffgaff one. Then bin o2 sim and won't get charged except the up front £40? Thanks in advance.

I noticed they also have. Z5 compacts for £153, but currently out of stock, that is not bad at all either.
pez555

Not at all. You need to put the sim in to activate the phone. It is a pay as you go sim anyway - no contract required.

There is no way to get it unlocked for free unless you have an o2 pay monthly sim.
Pay and go on o2 will charge £15
You could try your local phone shop but i doubt they will be any cheaper than o2.
Ebay cheapest is £15.49 but better option to go with o2 if your really desperate.

Collected this morning. Phone condition is perfect, guess they replaced all of the housing. Came with USB cable. OS is 7.1.1 and no performance issue detected. Phone is Xmas present for my dad, an upgrade from his Nokia 3310. Doesn't need latest apps, or any apps so should be fine. Checking battery holds a charge by leaving it alone and seeing how long a full charge lasts. I would expect a week.

24 Oct 16 #179
Hi, do these come locked so can be used on giffgaff with the £5 monthly goody bags. After phones for my 10 and 11 year olds. Do you reckon this is ok? I see it has gone hot but is getting a slating so unsure. 8gb should be fine for them at mo as they don't listen to much music and if they are fussed about latest app they can get it on iPad.

I was keeping my old 3gs in a box for my future grandkids (I have to impregnate a woman first though, but it will happen).
I had really looked after it and would take it out of its box every three months and charge it up, test it,etc. One day last year I opened the box and I found the back had somehow loosened itself off (I think, something physical like that anyhow), and the phone would not switch on, etc.
So I after trying to sort it out i just smashed it up and threw it away. Sad story.
Might get one of these, but just for my museum for my future grand kids.

Just got mine and it's mint like new, also on ios6 so it's running ok, there is an update to ios7 but that will make it run slow, so sticking to ios6 for now, i have just jailbroken it now so looking good.

Got jailbreak working again, just make sure you remove modmyi from sources then it runs like a dream.

i just bought one, this is good to give away as a present for those relatives always asking for a phone in india. I have an older one which is jailbroken and runs ios7 fine. Excellent for podcasts or general use as a phone, wont run the latest versions of apps since they need above ios8 which is unavailable for this. however it may download an older version if you have had it before. ( although the older version may not actually work anymore)
BTW
they are also doing the 4s for £69, theres also the alcatel Idol 3,LG Joy or Leon which are better and are only £30, and also the awful pixi 3 for a £5.

I used to, like 5 or 6 years ago. But I know a couple of people that still have the 4S and always moan how painfully slow they are, almost unusable other than for phone or messaging, so this must be even worse. With so many new Android alternatives available at this price point you would have to be an absolute Apple fanatic to get this.

I use my old iPhone 3 and 4S as home security cameras - just needs to run the one app - 'Manything' and it does a great job with motion sensing - also torch turns on if it hears a noise at night. Instant alerts to your phone and remote viewing. This is a great price for security camera use.

Right , so contextually speaking , that 1.5 GB of ra, which you purport to being irrelevant , actually provides a surprising adequately ergonomic experience on its version of android. Likewise the camera takes half decent photos , certainly as good as the iPhone and better in low light looking at review images.

I don't get why wouldn't spend that money on a phone that still supports apps ,it just seems odd. Also why is it on to not expect a lot for £40 on an ancient iPhone but similarly demand the world from a £40 android device ?

Nonsensical
preecey
23 Oct 16 1 #124
If anyone is in the market for a cheap iPhone, the absolute minimum model I'd recommend is the 5S. Although a few years old itself, it is still a supported device and runs iOS 10 with some lag but is manageable.

The 5S can be had on eBay from a couple of reputable sellers like MusicMagpie with some sort of warranty for around £120. You might even find a 5S deal on here from O2 Refresh for a similar price.

The iPhone 4 is an object lesson on how software ecosystems cripple perfectly adequate hardware. At least with a TV you can keep a great screen and keep cheaply swapping smart boxes. With a phone you're eventually be shafted. It's built-in obsolescence all the way!

No-one seems to have mentioned the potential WiFi chip self destructing, was it a common fault or was I the only one back in the day? People blamed the upgrade to iOS 7, saying it made the chips run hot but dont know if that was ever proved. I would buy one to use as an MP3 player but otherwise they do feel quite slow by today's standard. Heat all the same - cheap. Thanks

23 Oct 16 #120
To be fair a lot of similarly priced Android phones are also stuck on a 2-year-old OS.

However, this doesn't really compare well to a cheapo Android.

An Alcatel Pixi 5" has:

faster CPU (quad core 1.3GHz vs single core 800MHz)
much larger screen (this is 3.5" lol)
larger battery (2000 vs 1420 mAh)
Higher resolution camera (8 vs 5mp)
More RAM (1GB vs 512MB)
More recent OS

Same price.

This would be ok for £20, but at £40 it's still not competitive.

When you can get brand new Android phones running Android 6 much faster than this, with double the storage and microSD for almost the same price, I don't get why anyone would buy this. Seems crazy. These are awfully slow and unsupported. Check the Vodafone Smart Turbo 7 for example.
misterleoni
23 Oct 16 #113
what does RAM have to do with it? They're completely different operating systems. The camera on the iPhone 4 is still not bad. I'd be surprised if some crappy Alcatel at £40 would have a better camera than even a 6 year old iPhone.

22 Oct 16 #111
Well, I see your point but sell it for 35 when you bought it for 40 makes no sense. Please don't get me wrong, I loved the iPhone 4 when it was released, but now with so many alternatives much more powerful I can't see really an advantage in buying this phone. Even my 7 year old daughter plays games that can't run on this phone. Moreover it comes with 8GB and half is taken by the OS.
I know some guys that have it (even the 4s) and they say it is painfully slow.

22 Oct 16 #109
Just. No

Even the 4S is v.slow running. Browsing the internet is certainly not an enjoyable experience. The 4 is even older, and slower...

Do yourself a favour and either save up for a 5 or 5S, or get a Chinese Android phone. You can get a 2GB RAM/16GB ROM Android phone for under £50 these days.

These are NOT great for a kid, my 10 yr old has my old one, you can have calls, Facetime, Safari for internet and a few games. She already finds many apps cant be downloaded as its so old and cant be updated, now want a 5 or 6 to be uptodate but I cant afford it yet.
billybruiser
22 Oct 16 #105
Yes id agree with above, I've broke my s6 and am using my old 4s, it's painfully slow and that's the S! But for the money you can't go wrong as a spare phone, or even a webcam using a app?
IMT
22 Oct 16 #104
I really wouldn't buy one of these, I had to go back to my iphone 4 recently as knackered my newer phone, and it's now horrendous to use mainly as apple doesn't support it anymore. If I wasn't so close to my udgrade date I would buy a new better phone.

I have this phone and use it as a cycle computer. it is slow with the it's 7 and is hard to install apps on to it because it is not a higher ios. I had to install the strava app using my computer, going to the iPhone you click on install app in your app list, it then says something like can't download this version and will download the last version it works for.

It's an old phone, get over yourselves. It does the basics well. I can't think of one dated Android phone that Google's updates haven't crippled yet, or one that hasn't crippled itself by being generally terrible.

I'm buying this purely as a backup phone.

You must be kidding?! The iPhone 7 has a brilliant camera, far and away the most powerful processor, the most colour accurate screen on any phone (with the highest brightness), and as evidenced by various YouTube videos....the most capable waterproofing of any flagship.

(I don't own one....but if money was no object, there is no better phone out there right now)

I was given an iPhone 4 a couple of weeks ago by a colleague. It had a smashed screen and the sound didn't work. Spent £14.50 on parts and repaired it. It's sat in my draw ever since as I've got no idea what to use it for (I already have a phone). I suspect the same will happen for many who are currently trying to think of a reason they might want to buy this.

A fairly ok feature phone would cost as much as this in Tesco or Argos. This is a least a gorgeous stainless steel design. Wouldn't personally buy it but if I needed something for calls and texts and a bit of emergency smartphone functionality for work or holiday then £39 is hardly breaking the bank.

Im torn, I almost feel this is a decent deal but really, all your getting is a device with an average camera and less functionality than your £40 alcatel's etc. I suppose your getting better build quality but yeah, I think this deal is a about 12-18 months late for it to make any real sense.

A good price to own what was a bit of a game-changer for phones and iPhones in general. The Retina Display and modern design elements still look good today. I don't believe you can get a week out of this unless on WiFi only and as others have said iOS 7 is horrible on it.

Each new iteration seems to just slow things down without reason or decent new features and I notice some of Apple's own apps demand iOS 10 now.

Exactly what i mean it was ok in the microsoft and apple mac years you can keep an old version of mac osx and keep current apps and not update! But with the ipad iphone they stop the app working if you so not upgrade! iOS 7 apps are starting to not to work in it! I know because my wife uses ios 6 on an ipad 2 as upgrading would slow it down and nearly all the apps do not work!

It will be fine with iOS7 for a while. I only upgraded my 5s from iOS7 to iOS9 this summer and there were only a couple of apps out of the many I use that required iO8+ to download new versions. I had a 4 prior to that and downgraded from iOS7 back to iOS6 when I saw how ugly/slow the new version was.

It will be a bit sluggish but probably not as bad as the 4s on iOS9, which is very slow.

If you are thinking of getting it for the O2 priority apps then please think twice. As the iphone4 can only up to iOS 7.11 and the O2 priority apps requires iOS 8.0 or later. I have the iPhone 4 before but due to the limitation with iOS I have to upgrade to iphone6.
