as a little tip - if you dont have time to photo and prepare multiple listings befoe midnight tonight - just create a "placeholder" listing with a random title, description, add up to 12 random photos, and a high price so no-one buys. Then amend your listings at your leisure, changing the photos, descriptions, etc. anytime you like over the next few days. I normally do 30 day listings - i've just created 20 random listings and will change them at my leisure in next couple of days. As long as the listing was created before midnight tonight, the £1 FVF still applies

Ebay must be worried about the new Facebook selling app!
Dealio98
16 Oct 16 2 #100
The fact that eBay selectively message certain users and not others who are clearly also eligible for the promotion is such a sneaky tactic. Especially since a lot of private sellers on eBay are novices and wouldn't know how to check if they're eligible for a promotion even if they thought to. From my experience, when I started using eBay and my account was mostly inactive I got prompted with messages about these promos but as soon as I became active and began to sell a few things these messages stopped.
**** you off when greedy companies like eBay who take a whopping 10% cut on most item categories, use their sly tactics to prevent people from taking advantage of their hit and miss promotions.

The novice sellers are actually quite dangerous in a way, as they will perhaps get ripped off by scam buyers, which in turn leads those buyers to try it with other sellers, or the novice seller messes up the selling aspect somehow (dozens of ways to do that on ebay), which annoys the decent buyer and could lead to problems for 'good' sellers when that buyer thinks all sellers are bad or cheats.
kamenitzabrit
16 Oct 16 #108
I've read through all the comments on here, and am actually quite worried about the state of ebay when many of those posting here will be either buying or selling !
Many of the comments and questions are quite basic really, and can be answered by reading the terms and conditions - it makes me wonder how on earth some of those people manage to set up a paypal account or write an address correctly.
As a regular seller, I worry that someone will buy or bid on one of my listings when they don't understand the system, and could easily damage my account by making a claim which turns out to be their fault, though ebay always side with the buyer so my account gets hit with negatives for example.
As a buyer, I worry that the item will be wrongly described, badly packed so it arrives damaged etc etc, and I will then have to go through the hassle of making a claim and have unpleasantness........ all because someone has not taken the time to get to know what they are supposed to do.
I actually spent weeks reading through all the different rules and pages of advice, as well as reading the ebay buyer and seller forums ( sometimes called community or discussion boards). before my first sale or purchase....... it doesn't mean I did not make mistakes, or that I know it all inside out, but some of the comments and lack of knowledge on this deal, from ebay users, is awful - sorry if that offends anyone, but where money is concerned I think people ought to take more care.

Ebay are a bunch of idiots. Sold a perfectly working phone on there just to be told by the buyer that it is faulty. He even states that he is getting the exact same problem he had with the same model phone he purchased from someone else too.

Ebays resolution team took less than an hour to decide that the buyer was right and i have to accept returns and refund him. What a joke of a company!

Got the email last night and just opted in, so still working for me.

I get these offers from Ebay every few weeks, so much so that I now don't list anything until I get the next email offer. I was waiting for this as I have a fair few things to sell. These are good offers and without them I simply wouldn't sell on Ebay.

As for selling things like phones, I agree it's a very risky thing to do. However, earlier this year I sold 2 Galaxy Notes having upgraded to new phones and I was very edgy about selling on Ebay, but thank fully both sold for good prices and all went smoothly - no issues, no scams and no Paypal claims. Phew!!

Spot on they always agree with the buyer. I've noticed sellers that have started listing things under 'for parts not working' and then listing description as normal. I guess not everyone notices that at the top and it gives sellers the perfect get out of jail card free with Ebay. May try it myself to see if it has any major impact on selling the item in the first place!

Thanks OP, got stung on a few ebay listings that i relisted after the promotion ended

Like others have said, these promotions come up enough (at least for me) that i will only sell when a promotion comes up.
And to address the whole selling a phone on ebay thing, i'll agree its a risk but im pretty sure that i have sold more phones on ebay then anyone here, only problem i've had was very recently, phone didn't work properly according to the buyer, got the phone back and he/she was right, flashing a updated stock firmware fixed all problems and now its back on ebay.

I've been selling on ebay for over 10 years, here's what I've learned

selling anything over £50? use special delivery or appropriate insured postage
note down the IMEI of a phone so people dont return a different phone to you
buyers appreciate quick responses to questions and politeness (obvious i know)
quick dispatch is a must
scammers are everywhere but not as slick if you pay attention
if you take the risk of selling directly to a buyer through paypal to avoid ebay fees use an invoice to protect yourself
luvsadealdealdeal
16 Oct 16 #151
what you can't do is list multiples under one listing - if you've got several, they need separate listings/ different prices
luvsadealdealdeal
16 Oct 16 #152
just to add my tips: I've been frustrated by clearly incorrect feedback in the past, eg the buyer who gave a neutral because everything was OK - as he commented - presumably the guy who gives 10% tip in a restaurant when everything is OK but not quite goood enough for 15%

and I got negative feedback for selling sometyhiong new in a battered box - even though I highlighted several times 'battered box'

actually Ebay reversed those feedbacks on a phone call - so they don't always side with the buyer. Once the buyer claimed non delivery, I sent Ebay the postage details and they found in my favour

nowadays I won't normally sell anything except signed for, so that rules out selling cheap stuff - not worth doing that really, anyway - if you have cheap items, make a bundle to increase the value - works fine with kids clothes

don't dream of selling anything like NowTV codes as they are usually bought by thieves who claim the code didn't work

Back in 2001 I was selling lots on Ebay worldwide using a Paypal alternative (Nochex IIRC) who included chargeback cover free in case of dispute, and fund transfer fees were low ... Been reluctant to use Ebay since they changed the feedback format and everything is in favour of the buyer or powersellers..

I think ebay margins are what 10% plus paypal whatever they are. Then to post and pack the items. I think they recommend tracking. Buyers have questioned why postage is 'expensive' on my auction. I use Royal Mail and tracking is not cheap there!
livinthedream
16 Oct 16 #163

Why ?
If you sell an item for over 50 that you paid less than 50 for originally they will not compensate you for the selling amount ... so you could end up wasting money using special delivery at a higher cost than recorded delivery

Royal Mail will not compensate you for the price you have sold an item for , they will only compensate for what you paid for it and also as long as you can provide proof of your purchase

Bit of a trick. Have 2 accounts. One you use all the time and then one you rarely use. That way you get the marketing for loyalty and the hooks to get you to interact more.
Basher Walls
16 Oct 16 #166
Using a trick or two you can 'save slots' for the next 30 days.
I usually list about 10 or 12 old Xbox or PS4 games and price them quite high - Like Farcry 4 for £20
If it sells then that's the risk you take, but being priced so high, it never gets watchers or views.
Then when I do have something to sell I just revise the listing and you are still at the £1 deal.
Done this a few times for tablets, laptops and phones etc when I wasn't in the position to sell when the offer was on. Just edited the listing and sold at the offer price.
Doesn't always work though as I just sold one of the games today and I have to post it - never been out the plastic wrap but its a old game, but £17.50 for Disney Fantasia isn't a bad return.

16 Oct 16 #169
So what your saying is, if i bought an item for lets say £40 or lower from a shop but sold it on ebay for £50 royal mail would only compensate the price paid from the shop...

I thought it was obvious that my advice was for the more expensive item, some people are more willing to gamble on cheaper postage lower value items, you wont lose much either way so i get it

Your example is just too unrealistic, how many times have you bought something from a shop and sold it for a higher price on ebay?

16 Oct 16 #171
Ummm its answered here but its not clear on the T&Cs

I've just accepted this on my inbox and if i choose to sell some wheels on ebay.

Say for example it has a buy it now price of £500 or best offer, I accept a best offer of £400. When it comes to pay ebay the fees, I dont pay the 10% fee ebay normally charges but only pay £1? Is the correct?
JaYy_dOg
16 Oct 16 #172
Yes correct
JaYy_dOg
16 Oct 16 #173
Does this end tonight at 11:59pm or tomorrow 11:59pm?
Schizophonic
16 Oct 16 #174
so as long as I list it today or tomorrow, if i do an auction style or a buy now price, 7 days, 1 day, 30 days what ever I choose. If it sells I only pay £1 rather than the 10% fee ebay charges?

I guess paypal takes it normal cut?
Basher Walls
16 Oct 16 #175
Yes Paypal take their usual cut.
Ebay will charge £1 on sale of an item when listed on this offer - £300, £400 or £500 accepting best offer or not.
Its not a bad deal as long as you follow the usual ebay selling safeguards (well my safeguards)
Photo the serial number and keep it on file (may be needed)
Post anything and everything signed for, even second class and ensure postage costs are covered.
Higher value (over £40) send insured like Special Delivery - just list postage cost in listing.
Feedback, if the feedback is under 20 or low % then refuse a sale, just state in listing..
"Buyer must have over 20 feedback and must pay within 24 hours, failure to do so will lead to order being cancelled"
Communication - if you talk to them and they talk to you, things usually go well.
If the buyer states they never got the item and its signed for, remind the buyer that once reported the delivery company will investigate and the person who signed for item may be prosecuted for mail fraud (usually scares them to 'remember' that they have the item - has for me twice).
Finally and most important - accurately describe your item, photos of damage/issues - If you are selling poor condition items as nearly new, expect issues.

Hope this helps a few

For most of the last 4 years, my entire income has been based on exactly this. Although losses are rare, I've had some expensive items go missing, but it seems hit and miss whether RM compensate for the selling price vs purchase price. In the form I tend to put the selling price for value of item and hope the person in the office dealing with it, doesn't notice the proof of purchase showing it at a lower price.

9x out of 10, you'll get the lower price, but I did have something in the last couple of weeks get compensated at the full selling price, which was 3x more than the cost price.

My listing was quantity of 3. This rate is only for single quantity listings.

JhonSeb0810
17 Oct 16 #182
lol even with only £1 fee, paypal will take some of your money too. You sell £10? Paypal will take fees, you're down to £7.60... Then minus ebay £1 = £6.60. Then minus the postage cost, lets say £3 for recorded = £3.60... And this isnt even the normal ebay fees charge. Then sometimes your buyer would try to scam you saying the item isnt working. You are forced to give the £10 even though you only made £3.60.

Is it worth it?

Is it worth it?

They were good for me as well. The last time this offer was on I had listings running already which were already selling well into the hundreds... little did I know my idea of cancelling and relisting wasn't the best as eBay still charge final value fees for auctions you end early.
Explained to the chat I didn't know this was the case and they voided the fees for me... honestly went in thinking I had no chance!

How did you work that one out fella?

Ebay takes 10%, On a £10 sale it would still be a £1 fee. There goes your 'Normal' fee charge statement. Furthermore the PayPal fee on £10 would be 54p. Lastly, Its your choice wether you want to charge for shipping, You can add the '£3.60' as a shipping fee and you would still take in £8.50ish off that £10 sale. Not great margins but nowhere near as bad as youve made them appear.

Paypal fee is possibly less than you seem to think, though I confess I don't quite understand how they work it out. Eg yesterday I sold item £36.47, Ebay fee was £1, Paypal credited me £35.03 therefore Paypal fee was 44p. That was lower than I was expecting (20p + 3.4%) but not complaining.

as a little tip - if you dont have time to photo and prepare multiple listings befoe midnight tonight - just create a "placeholder" listing with a random title, description, add up to 12 random photos, and a high price so no-one buys.

One time someone clicked the buy it now button, even when the listing only had a title and said something along the lines of "waiting to be updated" had no pictures and a inflated price.
