Not as good as the Amazon 3 for 1 deal the other day but ...
Argos have 3 for 2 on all Lego Dimensions accessory packs + they will price match.
I got Adventure time Team Pack (£19.99 at Amazon) + Adventure time Level Pack (£19.99 at Amazon) + Scooby Doo Team Pack (£19.99 at Amazon) for £39.98
3 for 2 valid until 11th November 2016

Team pack - none, unless you haven't got any fun packs from the same world.
The first character you get from a particular franchise unlocks an adventure world for that franchise. Therefore, the effect of a fun pack and a team pack is identical, the only difference is price and the number of figures you get. If you're not too fussed about having all the different abilities (some characters can do things others can't) and just want to unlock all the worlds, then the fun packs are the cheaper way to achieve this (exceptions are Jurassic World, Scooby Doo, Portal 2, Midway Arcade, Mission Impossible, Sonic The Hedgehog, Gremlins, and Harry Potter, because there are no fun packs for those).
Level packs add one playable level. These are about as long as a single level in the main game storyline, so take about 30 minutes to finish.
Story packs (Ghostbusters Movie, Fantastic Beasts Movie, and forthcoming Lego Batman Movie) have six of those levels strung together as a narrative, plus a new construction for the Dimensions base.

Argos will price match to the cheaper prices and honour the 3 for 2 as well. I got them when they were £29.99 at Argos however as they were £19.99 at Amazon they match them to £19.99 and then 3 for 2

Anyone had any luck getting Argos to price match via the live chat feature. I was on for about half an hour earlier and the advisor would not budge on it. Said they would price match Amazon but then I wouldn't get the 3 for 2 as Amazon aren't doing that deal.

they tried to say this to me but I showed them how their policy was written online as it says
•If the competitor's product is available for delivery the same day, their delivery charge will be counted as part of the price paid.
As it uses the word 'if' they couldn't really argue, amazon didn't offer same day delivery on the product however it was clearly obvious that I could order the items the same day and pay the lower price with zero delivery charge regardless of when I received the items.

I know what you mean, it does all seem complicated to begin with (aren't all games?) but in the end, it's pretty simple.
The game has two parts. Levels, which have a story. And Adventure Worlds, which don't, they're just open areas where you complete missions and collect stuff.
The game you get in the starter pack is a load of levels strung together as a continuous narrative. You can add extra, one-off themed levels to this with the level packs. These aren't particularly long. I did the Simpsons one in about 30 minutes. They're fun though.
All the adventure worlds are locked to begin with except for Lego Movie, Lord of The Rings, and DC Comics, because you get characters from each of those with your starter pack. These are accessed from the central hub area with all the dimension gate things in it.
The others can be unlocked with any character from that franchise. I.e. You buy the Wicked Witch Fun Pack, and you can unlock the Wizard of Oz Adventure World.
So, if all you really want to do is unlock all of the available gameplay, then what you need to buy are all of the level packs, and then the cheapest option from each of the other franchises to unlock their Adventure Worlds. For most franchises, that's a Fun Pack. For some, it's a Team Pack.
Example. You buy the Doctor Who Level Pack and you get both the Doctor Who level, and the 12th Doctor character, which you can use to unlock the Doctor Who Adventure World. There's therefore no point in buying the Cyber Man Fun Pack, because you already unlocked the world with the Doctor.
There's also no point in buying Wonder Woman, Legolas, Benny, Emmet, Bad Cop, Unikitty, Superman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Joker & Harley Quinn, Gollum, or Gimli, because you've already got all of their worlds by default in your starter pack.
However, as you would expect for any game with multiple playable characters, they all have different abilities. Some areas of the game, and some collectables, require a specific ability to access them. And if you don't have a character with that ability, you can't get that thing.
None of those are essential. The levels are designed in such a way that the characters you have are enough to complete the level, either with the three you got in your starter pack, or the one you get with the level pack you bought. But if you're one of those gamers who wants to achieve 100% completion of collectables, etc. then you will need at least one character with each ability.
It wouldn't be too difficult to work out the minimum list of packs required to achieve everything you need.
The newest additions to all of this are the Story Packs. Which are basically just a loads of level packs (six, to be precise), together as a longer story. They've released the new Ghostbusters movie one so far. The next one is for the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them movie, and the third one will be the Lego Batman Movie in February. These come with one or two figures, a vehicle or two, a new construction for your Dimensions base, and six levels of gameplay. Easily the best value thing they've done so far if you ask me.
As for why... $$$$, obviously.

Hopefully Amazon will match the 3 for 2 deal (they have before), but without putting their prices up, as they're currently doing virtually all team and leave packs for £19.99 or less, as decd007 said (this deal is still hot though, he got that bit way wrong).
