Found a video of someone unlocking this mobile. Looks like needs to be done with hardware (FuriousGold USB key) and software (QCOM SMART TOOL MODULE v1.0.0.10264 or higher). You will notice at about 0:45 there are two options listed for OT-6039Y (Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 4.7) and the bottom one must be used (NEW SEC).
Hardware sells for US$89-159 so not worth it for one mobile. Will need to go find a local unlocking shop or market stall with a printscreen of this info.

Let me share my experiences unlocking this mobile. In March was in Czech Republic and got the dual-sim version of this mobile. It was not SIM locked. In August I scratched the back cover and replaced it with a cover from a dead one off ebay. Yes the back cover can be removed, there's a dismantling video on youtube.
When I put the old cover back on the dead mobile it somehow started working for a moment and died. I charged it and it worked. Bargain I thought but it was SIM locked. To find out which network it was locked to I just inserted different SIMS and it was O2.
Then the wild goose chase began trying to get working unlock codes. I tried four different online services and they all failed. To get refunds you need to show them a video of you typing *#06# to show your IMEI number and typing in the code they sent. Luckily they all refunded me (some took a long time and emails). Unluckily after 10 tries my mobile was now permanently blocked. It worked fine on O2 until it really did die some weeks later. Sold both phones as am moving to Germany and was given a company S7 nice.
My advise is to not use codes for this mobile until someone can verify a working online service.
With regards to Android upgrades no matter what I tried could not get past 5.0.2 on the locked Idol (6039Y). My unlocked Czech Idol (6039K) was on 5.1 I think and got 6.0.1 Marshmallow using OTU method (Mobile Upgrade app).

The only confirmed unlocks thus far have been by using "My O2" from existing O2 contracts (own or friend/relative), and hotukdeals81's & Gooner77's method using O2 £5/month data contract.
Alternatively try Highstreet/market unlocking stores if they have the latest software for "Alcatel Idol3 6039Y NEW SECURITY" (but no one has reported back this working yet).
No online unlocking codes work yet so don't waste your money.

6039Y model is not supported for remote unlock codes, only for direct unlock using USB cable. You needed to go to unlocking shop. Anyone saying codes online works is scamming you. Only O2 can do online codes yet.
You only get 10 trys to enter unlock codes then fone is permanently locked to O2. Do not waste your trys or money on online codes. You been warned. Do not cry then.

There does seem to be conflicting accounts in the various Idol3 threads (2527720, 2531359, 2535251). I wonder if there are different variants of Idol 3 "6039Y"? That would explain different experiences.

My £5 data contract was rejected (fair enough I have adverse credit history) so was forced to seek alternative methods. Mrunlock.com worked for me. You have to search for 6039Y and use the link that says "Alcatel OT-6039Y Unlock Codes".
These guys don't have a great refund policy so you takes your chances.

You need to put the sim in the phone first. This will register the phone on your contract and then you can request the unlock code. Use the sim, like send a text etc, with the phone for it to be registered with O2. I have done two unlock and it works

..."Mr Unlock will only consider a refund if all of the above criteria has been met. Refunds will only be given in extreme circumstances and are subject to a £2.50 administration fee (provided that you contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order)"
So if your mobile is unlocked they can refuse a refund? That admin fee is bullcrap. Code either works or not. If not then should be full refund endof.
FFS just pay £15 to O2 and get a guaranteed unlock code first time. Or ask a friend on O2 contract to insert their SIM in your phone and request a free unlock code in MyO2 online or app.

Here is the solution for unlocking. Minimum cost nil/£5 maximum you choose
The easiest way is to have it unlocked by requesting someone who has O2 contract. I could not find anyone in my circle of friends who had O2 contract. Here is what i did after many unsuccessful attempts from unlocking sites. It would take 3 to 4 days.
1. Purchased the cheapest sim only contract from O2. £5/month for data sim and it is rolling contract.
2. Received the sim next day and straight away requested the unlock code.
3. Received the code next day from O2.
4. As i had two phones now it is time to have the second one unlocked.
Sim comes with 500mb of data, no minutes and 100 text. If you feel that you don't need that sim anymore give 30 days notice and end the contract as per terms. No credit rating issue here aswell, i asssume, as contract is not cancelled whereas it is ended by giving notice. You can also cancel it within 14 days and pay for the allowances used.
Just for genuine need and not for abuse.....

Wanted to try guaranteedunlock but the phone number they had on their site was answered by a foreign chap who said he did not know who guaranteedunlock is. So I checked their address and the postcode and street name didn't match up. I emailed them to verify contact details and instead this info was removed. Now there is no contact info except through their CONTACT US webform. Also no VAT number or company register number anywhere on site. Very strange.
whois lookup for this website shows a different address 150 Nags Head Road, Enfield, EN3 7AR. This was not the address on the website originally however. This just shows a row of houses on google maps so can't verify if is legitimate (could be).

guaranteedunlock.com codes do not work for Alcatel Idol 3. The UK version of this mobile can not be unlocked using codes from 3rd parties. Only unlock codes from network providers will work in this case from O2.
Alternatively you can try unlocking using magic box hardware/cable solutions from high street vendors. But I haven't found one that knows how to in Manchester yet.
Problem is that Alcatel phones are customized for every country even those in Europe. So software or patchers from Germany Idol 3 will not work with UK Idol 3 even if the version numbers are the same. Google if you need more info its been known about Alcatels long time already.
But for £50 I would still buy. Hot.

Two phones from O2 this week you can't actually buy. They'll have the Note 8 next week.
Note there are reports of users having issues with sdcards and some apps after updating to Marshmallow. You may need to update to Marshmallow, then do a factory reset. Marshmallow will then start fresh and you will be prompted to complete first-time configurations. Make sure you have backups before starting.
Update: can disregard; does not work for UK models
