Saw this power bank in Lidl. Thought it was a good price considering its 5000mah also it takes and puts out 2.1a and also comes with a 3 year warranty. Bargain.

I'm not going to pay extra for everything to do with my phone for big 'IF' scenarios. I know plenty of people all using dirt cheap portable chargers bought from that auction site and none have had it 'kill' their device. Worst thing to happen is the battery stopped working.
I'm a firm believer of buy cheap buy twice but this is backed by a 3 year warranty. Found Silvercrest branded goods to be well made in the past anyway.

looks very similar to one I had from deal extreme which only worked for a day but at least with Lidl its easy to take back. I will try to resist though as my obsession with keeping things charged is already well gadgeted for.

Can you guess who is responsible if this cheap crap kills the device it's charging? That's right, it's YOU!
Personally if I'm going to be spending over half a grand on a device I'm going to be hooking it up to something by a known brand, so at least if it causes your device to blow you know they'd protect their reputation and brand by paying up for a replacement. Does this Lidl device even have a brand name?

If I've spent more than half a grand on a phone I'd expect it to be able to handle whatever crappy charger I plug into it. I remember watching a video a while back of Nokia using lightning to charge a Lumia 925, I definitely don't don't think that anything out of a 3 pin UK socket should damage a phone that expensive as long as it's plugged in correctly.

Silvercrest stuff is excellent quality. Tested numerous charging products with an amp meter and they're fine.
I've been using a silvercrest cable for my iPad for 2 years and it works great and is far superior to the garbage stock apple cable.

You're confusing Lidl with Poundland.
Both Aldi & Lidl generally sell things of very high quality - their expertise is 'value for money', not cheap.
But you stick to that nice Mrs Tesco; and she'll stick it to you.

Just be careful that "5000mAh" might not actually mean that in real terms. I bought a 10000mAh Xiaomi Power Bank for about 8 quid from Gearbest earlier this year, but it's "truly" rated at 6250mAh. Love the Xiaomi though - reckoned to be one of the best power banks out there.

I'm well aware of the dangers, I only use my genuine Apple charger with my iPhone. Like I already said, buy cheap buy twice.
However, only a fool would assume that a better brand immediately makes it better quality. My Anker portable charger heats up to almost untouchable temperatures but Anker said it was normal. My Vinsic charger doesn't even get warm.
Look at the phones themselves, Most Note 7's spontaneously combusting, couple iPhone's too and they're the 'best quality' devices.

That assumes that we never had standards before we entered the EU. What utter ignorance. In the case of this we would use the same CE mark that is currently used and required to import anything into the EU. I think you maybe just a bit bitter because you were on the losing side.

I wondered about that too. Seems odd that they've given a consumable item such a long warranty. Buy it, use it for two and a half years or so, wait for when Lidl bring out another similar deal, return the old one with the receipt quoting that it won't hold much charge any more, buy a new one with the refunded money for probably a similar price.

Some car jump starters do use Li-ion batteries, quite a lot of the modern ones pocket sized starters do. They use the cells to charge a supercapacitor which is what then jump starts your car.

Pretty sure it was a fault in the batteries, a possible perforation of a layer, a build up of gas and then ignition.
IIRC the tried to reduce the charging rate via new batteries and a software update, same fault reoccurred though.

on average it will charge a device fully and go flat. if I decide to carry one I want more capacity. good value for the money but you will say I wish I have paid a bit more.

There seems to be a lot of snobbery based upon ignorance posted on this site, if one opens up and examines products such as these, and compares them with premium brands such as Anker, you'll find that the electronics are virtually identical, and often branded cells such as Samsung are used.
These power banks are well made, and work very well too, one good point is that they will charge at 2 Amps, whereas many of the smaller ones only charge at 1 amp. This means they will recharge quickly, and are able to take full advantage of portable solar panels, which often give out 2 Amps or more.
The rated power may be a little confusing, the internal battery is rated at 5000 mA hr at 3.7 volts. ( 18.5 Wh ) This is converted to a 5 volt output to charge USB devices, as you don't get "anything for nothing" there are losses in the conversion, and in terms of power output, at 100% efficiency ( if that were possible) the 5V output would be about 30% less anyway.
Running it flat from fully charged, it gave out 2700 mAH at the 5V ( 13.5 Wh) not half bad really from an 18.5Wh battery
I would say that these are excellent value for money, and aesthetically pleasing, having about the same footprint as an iPhone 6. Don't let your (or other people's } prejudices put you off, these are not "cheap", they're inexpensive!
