Just shorten the brew size to 19L or so to keep the grain bill the same size :smirk: The beauty of this is all shops sell in these quantities so no need for a specialised order, measuring out or having grains left over. Hops are not nearly as important, I used EKG but almost any hop will do as hop flavours don't need to shine through.
The acidulated malt makes a big difference, I've brewed this type many times, substituting Oats for flaked Barley, adding chocolate malt etc but the acidulated gives it the twang associated with a decent stout. It's been my best brew to date and so simple!

I may give your recipe a try but with extra malt for a higher abv of 5% or so.
I have 40 or so brown swing top bottles that were from a Czech dark lagerI bought from Tesco in 2012, really nice beer bud they no longer sell it.

Homebrew is not about saving money for me; I want to create my own recipes as well as cloning beers that are hard to find (like my avatar pannepot by de Struise). I am starting a yeast bank soon, that should be interesting :laughing:

I just gave the cost thing as it will apply to many on HUKD.
My reason for getting into brewing was going to a pub in Prague called U Fleku. They brewed the most amazing dark lager, something I've never come across anywhere else and delicious. I've tried a recipe for it but it was too roasty (it may mellow after time, we'll see) so I'll keep tweaking until I get the recipe correct. If you ever go to Prague then put this on your must visit places.
If you like Stouts my House Stout is delicious:
3kg Maris Otter
1kg Flaked Barley
500g Black Barley
100g Acidulated Malt
100g DME (to make a yeast starter)
50g EKG 60 mins
S04
The reason it's a house stout is most of the ingredients can be bought off the shelf with no wastage. The above makes 23L or 40+ pints of 4% beer for around £10. That's what's in the above keg and very Guinness like (the bottled stuff not the pub stuff).
To anyone thinking about trying home brew, it need not be expensive to start up and you can brew 10 pints with most of the things you have at home.

surely these are mini casks, not kegs, as it contains live ale! great price. remember to close the valve on top after pouring, should help prevent the beer going flat too soon.

There's a thread on costs on HBF. It's an expensive outlay but if your say a 10 pint a week man then it fairly recuperates itself.
A Grainfather is on the horizon but decent beer can certainly be brewed for next to nothing at home. (that's how I got started).

I have never even done a kit! I bought a Grainfather, stainless conical fermenter and have installed an inkbird stc on a refrigerator to control my fermentation temps. I have the co2 and cornies too but wanted these mini kegs to temporarily negate the need for a kegerator and to make the beer I make portable, so I bought 12!

I'm AG myself, you won't look back if you've moved away from kits.
I've a corny keg system but these are handy, great for storage and transport and no fancy labels :smiley: I've yet to make a kegerator so these are better for storing in my fridge when my brew fridge is in use.
The bungs are 50-75p +P&P depending where you buy and with what order so buy a few at a time. I re-used the bungs too many times and they will fail eventually. I was lucky with this brew and just about salvaged this stout (my house stout is delicious :smiley: )

Nice one! I've only just got into all grain home brewing and what I have made already tastes great. These kegs cost about £7 empty from Homebrew supply shops so it's like free beer to me!

Sorry, bad pic but I'm on my third brew with this particular 5L keg. Stock up on bungs tho (cheap as chips) as I had a leak with a couple of kegs after a few uses.
