No, any cable will do, there is no difference in the cables.
1.4, 2.0 etc refer to the hdmi specifications, not the cables, which remain the same.
There will be no differences in color depth, frame rates etc between a £1 cable from poundland and a £1000 cable from... well... don't knwo from where

You're still confused. There is NO SUCH THING as a v1.4 (or any other v1.x, 2.0 etc) HDMI cable. There are standard speed (first, original type when HDMI was released) and high speed HDMI cables (plus Ethernet ones of the same standard/high speed variety). ANY £1 (for example) high speed HDMI cable, if it's not faulty or 'fake' or missing pins etc etc, will carry a 4K signal just as well as any £60 one or one that states all sorts in the description.
There is a new cable verification standard being introduced - 'Premium High Speed HDMI Cable and Premium High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet', but they are just the same high speed cables that have ben sent for testing and then been verified to work by HDMI licensing, and manufactures will be allowed to state that on the packaging. No doubt his involves an expense, that will be passed onto consumers, but in use these cables will be no different to a working cheapo high speed HDMI cable.
So the only reason one of your "1.4s" are not up to the task (displaying 4K I assume) then it's because they are faulty.
All High Speed HDMI cables will support 4K functionality when connected to 4K devices.
Once Premium certified cables are more common, I'm pretty certain some people will still have problems displaying 4K content when using a faulty one.

Yes, I agree a certified 1.4 cable would do the job, but a certified 2.0 is an easier option to look for, in most instances for the un aware.
Fact remains, not all 1.4's are up to the task. A 2.0 you will know is..
And I never said £60 curry's specials are better either... *rolls eyes*

No, in order to carry out high bandwidth tasks it needs a cable capable - this can be some 1.4 cables, but surely a cable certified for 2.0 is a safer bet?
Does HDMI 2.0 require new cables?
No, HDMI 2.0 features will work with existing HDMI cables. Higher bandwidth features, such as [email protected]/60 (2160p) video formats, will require existing High Speed HDMI cables (Category 2 cables).

I'm not using 4k, but what I did find was the the Poundland cable was not HDMI-CEC compliant. In a nutshell the cable wasn't capable of allowing one piece of equipment to turn on the other connected piece of equipment. I swapped the cable and all worked fine.
I was a little bit suspicious of the Poundland cable because its physical diameter was a little thinner than average cables. This leads me to believe pins 13 - 19 are not wired (HDMI - Wikipedia). I wish cable manufacturers were forced to label packaging stating whether a cable is fully wired or not.

Nonsense. Any fully functioning high speed HDMI cable will handle 4K. There is no such thing as 1.4 or 1.3 etc version cables. It's comments like this why people get ripped off in certain hight street stores - yes we all need those £60 HDMI cables.

As per the trusted reviews link there is so many things holding back 1.4 it's a bit daft to use one for 4k content.
Frame rates.. colour depth... and so on.
