So you bought the console for Zelda before it was announced and in the meantime, you don't like Nintendo games. My question still stands: why buy the console in the first place?! Best thing would've been to wait until Zelda is released and decide then not years/months in advance when you don't like the one thing that's guaranteed to be on it - Nintendo games.

I'm a big Nintendo fan. Under my TV is a Gamecube, Wii and a Wii U aswell as a PS4 and a high spec gaming PC. I play all of my Nintendo consoles with my son more than any of my other systems.
However, I now have literally zero interest in the Switch since their presentation. Only Zelda at launch (which is also relasing on the Wii U) and then only an updated MK8 (which I have most of on my Wii U) and then nothing but a promise of more games coming later.
I have no idea what they were thinking. If they had just released a solid games games with a couple of wireless Gamecube controllers and a bunch of Nintendo IPs then everyone would be rushing to buy it day 1.
Instead we get yet another console full of gimmicks that nobody wants or needs.
I will miss Nintendo consoles after the Switch finally brings them down but I look forward to playing Nintendo games on multiplatforms in the near future.

I think the sales you are referring to are slightly dated. If you look at the unit sales over the past few years you will see that they are struggling. Smartphone gaming has almost killed off nintendo's mobile hardware. In much the same way as PlayStation has hammered its home consoles.
Anyway I look forward to seeing what the NX actually is, personally I would prefer it to be a success as competition is always good but the likelihood of that is slim as I mentioned and it is just my opinion that it would be better for gamers to have the option to play Nintendo games on quality hardware like the PlayStation instead of having to buy poor hardware to play a handful of AAA games.

Jumping from SD to HD was a big deal because of the quality difference but now it's all in high definition and people already have TVs in HD, phones in HD, tablets in HD, consoles in HD and so on. It's also like going from 4x3 AR to 16x9 AR, the standard AR format is 16x9 but shows and films which were originally intended to be in 4x3 AR should always be that way so that no cropping is applied or stretched.
I personally don't even mind black bars on the sides when watching 4x3 AR content though some people are very bothered by it and would rather watch it stretched or cropped.

You mean 150 million DS, 100 million Wii and 60 million 3DS consoles sold don't count, just focus on the Wii U. The Wii U sold badly quite obviously, but I'm sure if they spent a fraction of the amount that Sony and Microsoft did advertising the PS4 and Xbox1 then it might have sold slightly better - there has been virtually zero advertising for the Wii U since it was released. From what Nintendo have spoken about their plans for mobile, it isn't to simply create mobile games but to generate awareness of their properties which they hope will somehow transfer into hardware and software sales - which is an approach which has been shown to have potential based on the increase in 3DS sales as a result of the success of Pokemon Go. It all depends on their new console, it shouldn't really matter about their past record since their recent hardware includes the massively successful DS and Wii plus the 3DS which has hardly been a flop.
Anyone suggesting that Nintendo should compete on specs seems to think there is a room in the market for 3 similarly specced consoles with the majority of games being the equivalent across all 3. 2 consoles is already more than enough so Nintendo would be stupid to bother following that approach. There are a fair number of people who have a PS4 or Xbox One (or both) who are less than excited with games on these systems. Yet another hi-specced console won't really cut it. If Nintendo can manage to show off the new NX successfully along with some top notch 1st party games then they may get lucky or they may not. No one knows until they have shown what the NX actually is.

Yes some of it is my opinion but the sales figures don't lie. Other than the Wii, Nintendo console sales have been pretty dire for too long.
And before you turn around and say 'who cares about sales figures', take that question to Nintendo.
That goes on to another great point being discussed in the comments. The DS vs the competition. The DS has pretty much kept the company afloat over the last decade. Only recently the sales have started to dramatically fall and Nintendo realised recently that they can no longer compete with the like of iPhone and android for mobile gaming. So they've seen the light and agreed to start developing mobile games for those platforms.
If the next Nintendo console does flop, which given their past record is pretty likely, then what do u expect will happen? (Given that they are not making much money on the DS anymore either).

People said the same about HD when it first came out. 4K and HDR will be the norm in a few years and if Nintendo don't cotton onto that now then they will be out of date with current tech once again. The original Wii wasn't even HD compatible FFS.

jsty3105
23 Sep 161#84
Yeah - agree - in southeast asia, the PSP and DS were generally sold on the basis that they had hundreds of games preloaded - I've heard many a parent ask a shopkeeper, "so, many games does that come with?" The answer would typically be, "how many do you want? Can load for you no problem." They'd then take out a huge folder listing out the games.
Both consoles had rampant piracy issues.
Spasho
23 Sep 16#83
PSP was more powerful than the DS but because of the slow UMD disc drive and possibly piracy (everyone was using backups at the time).
Just maybe, if Sony switched from UMD to Memory Stick to store the games in for the physical copies it might've worked because even I couldn't stand how slow UMDs were.

This is the only generation in the history of home console gaming where hardware has been such a key focus (and source of stupid arguments). In portable console gaming, there has never been a case where more powerful hardware results in an insta-win. I recall the Vita was supposed to wipe the floor with the 3DS due to the vast difference in power? It's also not a given that hardware is now the sole basis for determining the market viability for a console just because it's happened this time. It's certainly an important factor but way too much emphasis has been placed on it.
The arguments for console power in this past couple of years have caused a lot of people to make very silly (and childish) proclamations from all sides of the gaming community, ranging from gamers to company executives. I know "it's just business" but still...

Well either that or they need to pull their finger out and release some hardware that is on par with the PS4. Plus it will need to have 4K and HDR support as well now.
I just have a bad feeling that they will again release a dud that has a handful of great games but isn't in keeping with the times.
I have nothing against Nintendo. In fact, I wish they would seriously compete with Sony and Microsoft rather than just turning up as 'also-rans' again.

And half the features on my iPhone were probably pioneered by Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson before the iPhone came around. What is your point?
Nintendo haven't made a great console since the N64 and even with that they made stupid decision such as no CD's, a huge controller and memory cards/rumble packs that plug into the controller.
There is no harm in admitting that they are a bit clueless when it comes to hardware. The original Wii was a nice idea for people that are into the gimmicky side of gaming but fortunately they couldn't milk it again with the Wii U.
Anyway they have already given in and started making mobile games for iOS so it's only a matter of time before they do the same for consoles hopefully.

Appreciate you've owned a lot of Nintendo hardware but there has never been a single credible business reason with proper analysis to support the notion that this would be a successful exit strategy. Saying "Nintendo will make it work" is not a sound business justification.
Historically, there has also never been a single successful example of a hardware manufacturer and software developer succeeding by operating solely as a software developer. In fact, Sega is barely a developer these days - the bulk of their business is focused on games publishing.
This argument needs to go away until someone can put some reasonable projections together and to date, nobody has even come close to doing that.

Instead we get yet another console full of gimmicks that nobody wants or needs.
I will miss Nintendo consoles after the Switch finally brings them down but I look forward to playing Nintendo games on multiplatforms in the near future.
*EDIT* Noticed it in the small print, they take payment immediately.
I personally don't even mind black bars on the sides when watching 4x3 AR content though some people are very bothered by it and would rather watch it stretched or cropped.
Not gonna repeat on the third comment as I agree with bernardsfingers' post on each point.
(Given that they are not making much money on the DS anymore either).
this one looks dated, low quality poor textures..sadly.
Both consoles had rampant piracy issues.
Just maybe, if Sony switched from UMD to Memory Stick to store the games in for the physical copies it might've worked because even I couldn't stand how slow UMDs were.
The arguments for console power in this past couple of years have caused a lot of people to make very silly (and childish) proclamations from all sides of the gaming community, ranging from gamers to company executives. I know "it's just business" but still...
P.S. not sure where you were hoping they were going to plug in ruble packs (another Nintendo innovation) on the N64, but maybe they have the same universal interface where your opinions originate also.:smirk:
Got it?
Most people to be honest, don't even care about 4K or know what HDR is to matter.
I just have a bad feeling that they will again release a dud that has a handful of great games but isn't in keeping with the times.
I have nothing against Nintendo. In fact, I wish they would seriously compete with Sony and Microsoft rather than just turning up as 'also-rans' again.
Btw I don't consume or watch any of those things you listed there either, I guess that's what u do;)
Historically, there has also never been a single successful example of a hardware manufacturer and software developer succeeding by operating solely as a software developer. In fact, Sega is barely a developer these days - the bulk of their business is focused on games publishing.
This argument needs to go away until someone can put some reasonable projections together and to date, nobody has even come close to doing that.
they deserve it because some of their later decisions were plain stupid.
I'm just giving it to you straight; like a pear cider, that's made from 100% pears.
I mean, do you even know that Z:BotW won game of the show at E3 this year? Do you even care? LOL.
No thanks, I'd rather stop playing games altogether.
P.s. Before I start getting attacked by a bunch of fanboys. I'd like to clarify that I've owned every Nintendo console since the N64 (yes I missed the Super Nintendo hay days).
but 'buy now, pay 6 months earlier' is a new one on me :stuck_out_tongue:
https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/725224978984083456
anyway Ive sold my Wii U after just 6 months,I wanted to like it,but that gamepad really was AWFUL and FOOLISH.I hated playing with it.clearly they tried to take advantage of tablets popularity at the time and focusing of gimmick and they failed miserably.
I will wait to see what NX is,but if its really a mega gimmick device like latest rumors say it is ( a tablet with detachable side controllers which is just slightly more powerful than wii u) I will skip it.wont miss much with a zelda looking like that anyway.
I know that the internals are related but substance over form the Wii U is more Wii 1.5 than the Wii ever was just GC 1.5.
(And I don't even like saying that the Wii U is 'just an improved Wii', they're clearly all separate generations. So what if the timing is off from the competition.)
Judging by past form there is no reason to suggest they will do any decent bundles at all. I guess I'm holding some vain hope that this time around, having been hammered on the sales figures, they will actually try and pull out all the stops this time around!
I can dream
Unless it's kept as quiet as the NX?
The Wii U should've been released last console generation as the Wii was just a GameCube 1.5.
Most 3rd party titles on the Wii U are available on the 360 n PS3, while a number of software houses have released titles for the Xbox 1 n PS4 that they said they couldn't do on the Wii U, Batman Arkham Knight n Dead Rising 3 to name but two.
I'd do too if I wasn't a long-time owner of Nintendo's current console. As long as the game's performance runs fine and the graphics look good, I'm A-OK with it.
Waiting for the NX.
8th gen - PS4, XO, Wii U
7th gen - PS3, 360, Wii
6th gen - DC, NGC, PS2, OX
5th gen - N64, Saturn, PS1
4th gen - SMD, SNES
3rd gen - NES
And as such.

So the guy doesn't like Nintendo, I don't either.
I also hate Microsoft -not really a big deal to dislike the state of the console scene today.
Son doesn't have any Sony stuff so no opinion on what they're doing; I'm guessing reboots n FPS?
Breath of the wild was only mentioned a couple of months ago, so how is it possible you new about breath of the wild in 2014...
Zelda
Something Mario (probably a NSMB game as the sell the best)
Smash Bros port
Splatoon port/Spla2oon
I've been waiting so long for a new Zelda game that I'm willing to wait a bit more. But to be honest, it's not the exact Zelda game I wanted, the one I wanted specifically was this but I'll happily take BotW too.
Maybe we'll get the Zelda tech-demo 2011 into a full game on NX.
OBVIOUSLY? because i found the mario kart boring? no, i haven't found any games on the wii worth buying and you you read my comments i brought it for zelda... i didnt know the pick of games for the console were gonna be dire.
