Anyone know about an updated model of this being released?

The VM is my main file storage; I don't back up to it, I back it up to a couple of 4TB USB drives. However, it is a fully functioning copy of DSM and it can act as an rsync target.

Wasn't transcoding that was the problem. The server would just disappear randomly, effectively crashing and needing to reboot the nas to get plex to restart. It would work fine for a couple of days maybe then disappear again. Wasn't uncommon looking at the plex forum. In fairness there was good dialogue and regular updates too try and fix it. I just can't be bothered with trying to keep up when the standard media streamer works fine with my Samsung telly, just doesn't look as pretty

Bought one of these at the start of the week from Amazon for £133 after my ds212 gave up the ghost. I'm impressed with it so far. Seems much snappier than my old unit. Transferring the hard drives was super simple to, with DSM importing settings automatically.

Do you run dsm on the vm so you can backup to That location?
Of i understand this Means you dont need a synology as a destination device to run a backup over rsync.

Would it be easier to use the Synology OS? What software did you need to run on your mobile phones/tablets to view the 1080p content?

Great bit of kit, i needed a solution for streaming my bluray rips with HD audio. I have this setup without plex as not been a fan of plex for ages. Using kodi on my PC and fire tv box v2 requires no transcoding as both can handle large files and convert the audio at least on my bedroom fire v2 into stereo for my tv, pc just passes through to my amp. I run infuse on my iPad as it also can play the DTS HD audio formats without transcoding on the server side. There are lots of android boxes for very little money that can play HD audio without the need to transcode. In my experience if you can't play an MKV natively it's usually the audio. Anyway I have had no issues with synology, lots of updates on a regular basis, emails any issue, but hasn't been any except updates. Good price, good buy, good kit, heat

how do these compare to a HP proliant - I have one of these and had 3-4 years now and was thinking of upgrading and wanted to know how the compare - i have the n54 i think if that helps

I use the Hp for sickbeard, sabnzbd and plex server - if this helps

Hot. Bought one a few weeks back. Make sure you budget for 2xhdd and recommend you run raid 1 for proper redundant data storage.

The unit is well impressive and has endless features. Quite complex it you want to customise the setup though, but that is the reality of these all singing all dancing NAS systema.

Agreed. For transcoding on the fly, you'd be looking at the DS216:Play (at a minimum).
It's that time of year though when Synology are about to announce new kit. I imagine 117/217 are on their way.

Would this device be able to store xhamster videos and stream to iPad for offline viewing?

Agree with the comments. I have the DS212, great piece of kit. Besides Sonar, downloaders and file streaming, I also use the backup software. They have tools that will connect to onedrive / icloud collect all your photos from yours devices, bring them down centrally and then we backup everything to amazon at a stupidly cheap price. Buy NOW!

I had one of these briefly just to test out synology software Vs my windows NAS setup and i have to admit, it is rather simple and even though the synology does not have the raw power of a windows server/nas setup, it was fast enough to run sonarr/couchpotatoe/sabnzbd etc without slow down, streaming media from wifi or 4g was smooth, better then my current windows method, remote access is possible without port forwarding, great for guys in uni or those without direct access to a router, raid setup is simple too.

I only had this model for a short time because i needed a 4 bay version but would still highly recommend this.

The CPU in the DS216j doesn't have enough grunt to transcode. You'll have issues unless your clients are capable of direct playing your media and have sufficient network bandwidth to handle higher bit rate streams.

This is still an excellent price for this but of kit.

I'm still running the 211j. Still going strong on DSM 6.0 with 2 x 2Tb Western Digital Reds in it. :smiley:

I've got the DS115 and wouldn't do without it. Would love to upgrade to the DS116 but won't have the money for a while.

Got the 215j. Excellent bit of kit. Streams to all my tablets, phones, Android box and tv's.
