The price on the box was due to the fact they were selling both the controller and link as one for £99.
The box on the shelf was mean to represent both as a bundle.
But they didnt have a larger box or seperate ones for the controllers in that store.
Definately still misleading Joe Public who dont realise the rrp.

love the steam controller, but for fps games no matter how much I fiddle around with the setting the right "analogue stick" space moves so slow. so if you need to turn fast it's just impossible, anyone know a fix for this or is it never gonna be good enough for that type of game ? for cities skylines type games it's brilliant though

I have about 4 Xbox One controllers in the house, all of which I know wont work wirelessly with the Link (without additional software called Virtual Here), so will have to use a long usb cable, but I am also temped to get the Steam Controller as this is natively wireless with the Link but I have seen bad reviews about it.

Very tempting at this price. I'd like to get the Steam controller to make playing strategy and point n click adventure types games in the living room more comfortable as I've heard it's good for these kinds of games that regular controllers just aren't designed to handle.

Also considering the Steam link as I'm looking for a really simple easy to use solution for steam game streaming. At the moment I use a Nvidia Shield TV box, which is fine mostly, but sometimes it just inexplicably decides one day it won't connect or sometimes downscales the resolution to 640*480 for no apparent reason. I suspect it's down to bugs in the Geforce experience software link on the PC and Shield TV.

I'm thinking the Steam link might be a more robust system with less software layers that can go wrong?

One more thing, does anyone know what controllers work with the link (apart from it's own Steam controller). Do PS4 or Xbox One controllers work?

I've seen several reports of this from people. On the other hand loads of people rave about how stable it is.

I think this will vary depending on ones own network. Certainly something to buy online from Game so it can be returned under DSR if one has problems.

I had problems with the steam link over TP-Link Powerline adapters, frequent slow downs, was quite frustrating, changed to Edimax 600Mpbs Powerlines and has all been ok. I didn't get the controller, just use a wireless xbox 360 one.

I've tried Link at a few different houses (all with good broadband speed) and it seems to work amazingly well at some and too laggy to really enjoy at others, I was never able to figure out why exactly. Luckily it works great at my house so is perfect for living room gaming.

I think it was just Games ridiculous bundle offer, you couldn't be the Steam Link by itself or the controller, you had to buy it with Steam credit and other things. I asked them if they would be doing them separately and was told no so I bought direct from Steam.
reddragon105
28 Sep 16 #27
They're £39.99 each on the Steam store but I believe the Game deal also included £20 of Steam credit so £99.99 made sense - in fact, considering the Steam store postage costs you would have saved about £7-8 getting that deal from Game. I just think the RRP is a bit steep for the controller and Link. £27.99 is about right.

It would probably consume less power, if that's a concern. Otherwise it is basically the same as streaming between two instances of the Steam client on two different PCs.

Maybe just get an Xbox 360 controller for it then? They're still great controllers and will work with the Steam Link with a USB wireless adapter. Or the PS4's DualShock 4 will work natively over Bluetooth, and the new Xbox One S Bluetooth controller probably will as well.

Well worth it imo and tempted to buy another.

I've got mine connected to VM SuperHub 2 (I think) and then through eBuyer extra value homeplugs and a TP Link switch.

No problems gaming although sometimes get a slight audio delay if I'm using it to stream the football to downstairs.

Often see the controller and link bundle for £60 in Steam sales so it could work out cheaper to get steam credit from cdkeys and buy it that way (assuming you want both).

but remember that steam add some ridiculous postage charge on top too though....
This means the bundle of Steam Link and Steam Controller for £79.98 has shipping of £14.80 applied, making it a steep £94.78.

i just went for the steamlink... was tempted by the controller, but i have loads of Xbox360/XboxOne pads so cant really justify another.. especially as i'll probably prefer the XO pad.

So how does this work? It streams from your PC to living room TV? Can it be used over WiFi? Does it use the internet connection as I only have a very slow one, 4.5mbps down and 0.7mbps up! I have gigabit ethernet to my PC but only WiFi to TV.

OK found most of my answers  I only have a N router, it recommends ac and 5ghz.

Yes streams over your home network, wouldnt use wifi as too many hickups, but with a powerline adapter its perfect. Slow internet connection doesnt matter as it uses your internal network speed.

Ah boo, out of stock currently online - I had just picked up a steam controller for £35 from CEX which is the next cheapest if like me you dont have a GAME store nearby

The steam controller is a great option for anyone wanting to game infront of your TV, it takes a little while to get used to and will never beat a keyboard and mouse, but once you get the hang of using it and loading the community pre-set/setting up your own for all the steam games it really is a great option - you can even use it effectivly for RTS games like total war

I love my steam link, though I did find the built in wifi unit to be rubbish. It might link at 800+mbit but it can only push about 30mbit :P I've seen 800mbit/s off the main AP, not link speed, actual throughput from steam so I know it's good for it.

I set a spare router/wifi AP to client mode then connected it to the main AP, so the client AP does all the wireless stuff and other devices just hook up to the ethernet ports on it, suddenly I get 100mbit solid with no drops whatsoever and the steam link performs amazingly.

tl;dr wifi on steam link sucks, use wired.

Can this support more graphically intensive games - I'm thinking Assassins Creed, current Tomb Raider, F1 etc?

This just depends on your PC
Stelph
29 Sep 16 1 #59
The link can broadcast up to 1080p at 60fps, the quality of the graphics depends on how good your source computer is and also the network connection - ideally you would want to either have it connected via ethernet or Homeplug, id steer clear of wifi

The Steam Link doesnt render the games, your gaming pc does It allows you to stream the game and play it on another tv or monitor in your house.

I suspect Game will get a tonne of returns on the Steam link from people thinking it is an actual console as evidenced partly by this thread. Valve just haven't done a good enough job of making it clear it's a streamer only and not a self contained console.

I put the game link through Flubit a few times and was really pleased when it came back with a further 15% off the Steam link, of course being Flubit they cancelled it this morning as soon as Game went OOS and now OOS at game too. :disappointed:

Cheap way of 'streaming' games from your main PC in the house. I currently stream games to a media PC that sits under the TV, but that little Intel NUC PC set me back about £300. For a 'dumb' terminal to stream to this is a pretty good price, I'd say. Remember though, you'll need a decent PC to stream the games in the first place i.e - at least a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and Nvidia GTX 950 graphics or higher, I reckon (in real world, maybe not minimum spec)

Hot Deal! Thanks for the heads up! I picked one up from CEX for the 2 year warranty and it was faulty, they hae no way of testing it. So they refunded it and put it back on the shelves the next day! cheeky mofos!

This price is tempting to me to get another one though! Although.. Was £99.99 , Now £27.99.... Even the website is spouting that nonesense!
Dichotomy
29 Sep 16 #66
Just picked one up and the guy in the shop informed me that it was a streaming device before selling it, so guessing they have been told to make sure people know. Won't help much with online though I guess, but anyone who thinks they are getting a PC for £28 probably deserves the disappointment or they wont learn

To anyone getting OOS on the site, just refresh as every time I've checked they've been available.

Bought the last Link & Controller from Game Castleford (Jct32) at lunchtime, even though they had loads of empty display boxes out. Can't wait to test it out, I already have a PS3 pad, 4x WiiU Pro Controllers and a wired X360 pad so should be ok for local multiplayer action. Should get full speed out of it since I have Cat6 cable from my TV area to the gaming PC upstairs.

As said, the shield and the link are two different products really – the shield is a lot more capable as it is a stand alone android desktop so can run any android app and also has the Nvidia gamestream from your (nvidia graphics) PC or they offer the Geforce Now subscription service for streaming games from their servers but for fees

The Link runs Valves own software only so can’t run android apps (there is an API for creating apps now but im not actually aware of that many that are out) but it can stream games from your PC

Whichever is best depends on your requirements
jacjacatac
4 Oct 16 #83
Yeah, I'm personally not sold on either myself.
If the Link could stream games straight from an online library without a PC, it would have a much better USP for me.
The 'tethering' is niggle.
And naturally, £149 for an Android box plus a few exclusives (Half Life 2, Portal etc) just isn't worth it.
