This is worth it I think for the extra hard drive space and more power even for 1080p gaming. Will be selling my previous white PS4 as well to fund this. Was hoping for some bundle deals but I suspect the slim will have bundles as it has just come out.

15 Sep 16 3 #29
None whatsoever, forget the 4K nonsense that's for the rubes who just care about buzzwords.
If you have a 4K TV games will run at 1440p be upscaled and they will nice, but, the best reason why you should get is because it will do awesome 1080p either with solid 60fps or/and with super sampling game will look even better at 1080p.
If you don't game a lot or don't a good HDR TV (as said forget 4K) then don't worry you wont miss much, however if you game on your PS4 on a regular basis, are a new user, planning to get the PSVR headset, or have a good HDR TV this is definitely be worth the purchase/new buy.
This is the console that both Sony and Microsoft should have launched with right from the outset.

I'd doubt supersampling would be the preferred method of AA, as that's often as hard to run as native resolution.

Most likely 2-4x MSAA.

Otherwise it's just upscaled 1080p to 2160p games, and it shows. Blurriness galore.
donbarney
16 Sep 16 #121
its not sony's fault that blu ray discs dont sell well. most people accept that streaming and downloads are the future
Vegeta
16 Sep 16 1 #122
It's not that simple. Sony uses what is known as checkerboard rendering for 4K which is not a linear upscale from 1080p to 4K using interpolation.

The source resolution for checkerboard 4K ranges from 1440p to around 1800p as of now with 1st party games looking sharper than 3rd party games at 4K i.e Rise of the Tomb Raider vs Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Some games will even render in native 4K such as The Last of Us. You just can't expect a £350 console with a 4.2TF GPU to compete with a 9TF PC GPU that costs over £550+ which also struggles with 4K so for now checkerboard 4K will suffice.
mp2611
16 Sep 16 #123
It will start with new games running fine on PS4 and better on PS4 pro. Then new games will run fine on PS4 pro and a little laggy on PS4. Then soon enough new games will be solely marketed at PS4 pro owners and playing them on PS4 will be comparable to playing them on a double cheeseburger.
Graham1979

what's going on is.... both MS and Sony have decided to be douchbags and go down the apple way of running a business, frequent hardware releases with minor updates to the hardware.
As you know, if you want to play online you MUST be on the current firmware.. Next "surprise" will be the original xbox one is and ps4 will be dropped on later firmware releases, won't be for another 2 years at least I reckon, but you read it here first peeps!
batezy_1984
16 Sep 16 #130
The way I feel about this is that Sony want you to pay for something that should have been included with the original console. Like the 'solid 60fps' or true 1080p gaming. Effectively customers are paying twice. And yes I am a person with a 4K tv but may as well wait until the new Sony console comes out as this won't be true 4K gaming anyway. And Game with their offer..... (PS4 plus 5 games then Pro half price) are they joking ????

I think it's a shame they didn't include UHD disk compatibility and it may well bite them in the future. The original boy ray ability is what put the PS3 on top to start with.

you're right - i'm pretty sure that both playstation and xbox will adopt this policy - even though they're saying previous owners will be fine - i'd imagine the difference will be even more pronounced when scorpio launches next year - even though games will technically be backwards compatible

although the whole announcement of the ps4 pro was a little underwhelming and the way it has been presented has been fairly poor, i do believe that the ps4 pro will bring about decent upgrades for those who use the console regularly and have a goodish tv (pref. 4k but i reckon a decent 1080p tv will still look better with the pro) - it would have been nice for playstation to be closer to the proposed scorpio spec. and have uhd - however the main positive of the release is the price which is pretty good for the spec. you're getting

it's all a little needlessly complicated but personally i'll be upgrading and selling my existing ps4 to my brother

incidentally second hand ps4s are/will be pretty dirt cheap on the run up to the pro launch - people quoting that they'll get £200 for selling their old ps4s will probably be a bit surprised with what they actually get (plus remember ebay 10% final value fee + extra paypal fees) - i predict people will be getting closer to £125-160 when selling their consoles on - for a hassle free sale i'd seriously be considering cex over ebay even if it is for a little less - at least you don't have to worry about someone complaining about the purchase down the line

Had it for around a year now
Not even a high end HDR model but picture quality is just lovely. Can only put it down to the quality of the scaling chipset
It's al too easy to get caught up in having the absolute best specs when looking for a TV, sometimes you just need to go into a store with a selection of good and bad source material on a USB stick and see which TV you like the look of the picture quality on.
I did actually buy a Sony X85 first..but the Android experience was just such a horrible crashy lag fest that i took it back...

also streaming in 4k is significantly inferior to full fat UHD 4K bluray in terms of picture quality.even with a good fibre connection due to compression. Its often on a par with / only a bit better than standard bluray. If you want proper UHD quality, you need a UHD drive.

Rubbish, Rise of the Tomb Raider in 'unlocked' mode generally runs around 45fps, a far cry from the 'solid' 60fps you're claiming, the CPU is too weaksauce and will prevent most titles from achieving a glorious 60.
malachi
16 Sep 16 #159
You are good to go with the KS9000 because it has HDR 10bit, which is classified as "proper" HDR when cheaper TV's such as Hisense 4K HDR TV's are HDR 8bit. Which some call "HDR Ready"

This is why I am waiting till next year when all the issues with OLED TV's are fixed with input lag. When HDR is finalized and you don't have all these silly HDR bit complications.

Like with one TV with, to reduced the input lag with consoles you need to put it in gaming mode. Ok, thats fine but in gaming mode HDR isnt supported  So how are you suppose to get the best gaming experience from the PS4 Pro and XBox One S!?!?!? And the manufacture has openly said this cant be fixed with a firmware update. So wait for their next model.

So that's why its best to wait till next year instead of getting one now. Especially with the price.

OK there's too many things to explain in a forum post here but either the Pro isn't out yet nor the final patch for the one specific game you're mentioning, but more importantly just because you give the developers more powerful hardware doesn't mean they have the inclination or more likely the skill to get it running at a solid framerate.
You could give them a dual Nvidia 1080 setup and they could still mess it up.

What I said was this was is the console spec that both parties should have launched for at it's designed to do solid 1080p/60fps and good 1440p/30fps with a very good 4K upscaler, now whether they reach that is up to the skill of the developer and just because one game that hasn't been finalised yet on an unreleased console doesn't mean you can damn that whole thing before you've even seen it.

TBF what you said was "but, the best reason why you should get is because it will do awesome 1080p either with solid 60fps or/and with super sampling game will look even better at 1080p."

I'm willing to bet very few if any current 30fps titles will run at a stable 60fps. I just can't see many 3rd parties willing to dedicate resources to make the pro patches run games at more than better settings. I've bought every console for the last 3 generations, if I knew that I could play most of the my games at 1080/60 I would have already pre-ordered, sadly this isn't going to be the case.

So let me get this straight... Console players have spent the last three years saying "graphics aren't important, real gamers care about gameplay", but then spend £300 for the second time in three years to get a marginal graphical boost (still not even a consistent 1080p 60fps!). So that's £600 + £180 in online fees = £780. That £780 would have bought a kickass PC. Whoops. Let's not even talk about how much more expensive console games are, and that you have to pay £30+ for "remasters" and last-gen ports.

It's a shame you can only vote cold once.

You seem to be quite far from reality. This new console is nowhere near powerful enough for solid 1080p 60fps, and just forget about even seeing 1440p on anything other than Tetris. Blaming developers for failing to hit it is ridiculous.

No point bickering about anything.

If you don’t want a 4k Blu Ray player, don’t want native 4k gaming, don’t mind a console that looks like a big mac made from cheap plastic built in Taiwan and want a marginally more powerful PS4 that upscales games then this is the console for you.

If you want native 4k uncapped framerates build a monster PC for £1500.

If you want native 4k gaming, 4k Blu Ray, 4k streaming and forwards compatibility at an affordable price wait for Project Scorpio.

Jinkz
16 Sep 16 #195
It'll (the scorpio) be affordable by the time it comes out, a year is a long time in technology and gives it plenty of time for prices on components to come down.
Lukesablade
16 Sep 16 #196
What do you consider affordable?

If they sell the console at any price under £500 they will be selling at a loss.
noiren
16 Sep 16 #197
How so? The graphics card on the Pro is identical to the AMD RX 480 which for the price is the best card atm for solid 1080p gaming but also gives decent 1440p performance, and that is on PC which typically is not a optimised as consoles.
With the PS4 I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as the hardware's not as powerful, but with the Pro if they can't manage to give me solid 1080p/60fps there's no excuse, either they're not skilled enough or they have the wrong priorities, but yeah this time round the blame lies squarely is with the developer.
donbarney
16 Sep 16 #198
Im guessing it will be around £550
donbarney
16 Sep 16 1 #199
no way will be on par with the 480, probably around the 470 sort of spec, and remember it is using the same cpu which is already a bottleneck, they will overclock it a lil but not drastically
Lukesablade
16 Sep 16 #200
I was thinking around that or £599.

As we've seen before with the PS3 and XB1 anything north of £400 doesn't sell well and thats because it's not an affordable console.
Jinkz
16 Sep 16 #201
£400-500 given the spec, I don't think they'll sell at a loss though. If you're looking at todays prices yes, but it's a whole year, prices will go down, new tech comes out, giving them plenty of time to nail down the component prices with manufacturers.

I actually bought Plasma at its death at the beginning of 2015, the last in the line of the LG productions with 5 years warranty, and glad I did...will wait until the market settles. I have said it before and I will say it again...the whole irony with 4K is ridiculous.

At one time people strived to get the best in audio, a lot these days are happy with compressed crap, yet want the best in picture quality and rushing to upgrade their 1080P sets with budget edge lit 4K TVs not even realising there is next to know reference level content out there.......and once again, having compressed crap.

The amount of people on HUKD saying that physical media is dead, yet even at 1080P, blu ray far surpasses both the bitrate quality of streamed services, as well as providing in many cases uncompressed audio.

Cue 4K.....the problem worsens, unless you buy UHD discs, even with H.265 codec being far more efficient than existing H.264 the best that Netflix is pushing out is marginally better than standard Blu Ray discs....and still not offering uncompressed audio.

Physical media is far from dead in those that want the best quality viewing experience aside streaming your own rips providing you have the bandwidth, paid services just don't cut it, and most certainly essential currently to get the most out of a 4K TV, clearly the streaming services are not offering much more than 1080P Blu Ray quality, the irony being that even with that many wonder why people buy Blu Ray instead of streaming....yet are happy to buy 4K TVs to be ahead of the curve....lol.

It's way too early to market, expensive UHD discs and players, a fight between budget LED lit LCDs, the array of Quantum/Nano dot TVs in another attempt to push more out of LCD and then in the true successor to Plasma camp the OLED still being very expensive.

Then, even if you cared less about film, it's clear that gaming this generation is most certainly not going to provide you with a proper 4K experience....granted HDR will make things pop on screen better with vibrancy....but I am happy to wait.

Admittedly anyone wanting to buy a new TV as of now or replacing a dying or upsizing from an existing one would do wise in investing in a 4K/UHD TV but seriously I would not be happy in a marketplace that has not matured...especially as not all 4K TVs are HDR capable even.

I just tried to put in a preorder and it is refusing to process it due to some sort of issue with the clubcard vouchers - claiming I either already have used them today (errrr, NO) or they have problems contacting the clubcard system.

What a load of carp the whole clubcard thing is - it must be the most convoluted possible way to run a discount system. If they don't get it sorted without me having to call them, I'm not going to bother to chase it up and will just buy the item somewhere else.

16 Sep 16 #207
The chip seems identical to a desktop RX 480 but most likely underclocked/voltage'd to keep power and thermals down. How it will compare with desktop counterparts it's hard to tell as consoles are designed to cut any excess fat like windows and other overhead and in a 1-1 comparison game will always look/perform better.
As for the CPU, yes it can make a difference if the developer programs the game to take full advantage of it, but in the majority of cases it's far easier for them to dump all of the processing into the GPU for a number of reasons, so I don't think it's as much as bottleneck as people think it is. It is always better to invest on a strong GPU rather a CPU.

What I want to get through is that Pro should be more than capable of doing solid 1080p and even decent 1440p, even if it was gaming but some people seem to write it off because one developers comment about their unfinished patch on an unreleased system. C'mon now don't got nuts on some flippant comment you saw on Reddit or gamespot, use some common sense.

Even THAT configuration was being reviewed as not providing a guaranteed stable framerate of 60fps @ 4k. If I was dropping that much loot, I damn well want to see that quality 100%. I don't think the graphics cards for PC's are just there yet, maybe another 6-12 months may be different, of course I am not deluded enough to think the Pro, with its specs can compare - but for the price Ill have one.
ronaldmacdonald
16 Sep 16 1 #212
There is some truth here, when I went 4k in 2014 there was little streaming content - and it was variable quality then compared to the physical media, for example UHD videos through USB. Fast forward 2 years. Its still pretty much the same streaming wise. Upscaling a good quality HD source though with a 4k set does make a difference - but for pure 4k at full bandwidth, streaming is still very, very limited - if non existent. I might try one of the new UHD blurays for comparison (previously the 4k blurays were nowhere near 4k).

Yeah its a strange one. There isnt that much % of users yet bought into 4k.
So either they are doing it for:

A) They realised, anything but sport games in their new virtual reality headset, runs like toffee

B) They were hit with scorpio in the nads and have reacted with a mid upgrade as to take the wind out of microsoft sales.

C) 4k aint doing so good, so they hoping for a double (or even triple) hitter. By way of people investing in 4k TV's and hoping they get a Sony TV.

Whatever the reason, A/B/C or another entirly different reason. They sure confusing the consumer and trying to milk us for all our hard earned coin.

Just hope by (just like Apple) using the Pro monicker doesnt mean we will get a new console every year, just slightly better each time!

Believe me, when scorpio launches ans production costs come down. There will be a 4k player included in a new version of Pro.

You can't react to a competitors product within mere months and have it launch in the very year they supposedly reacted. It is logistically impossible. If anything, MS likely reacted to news some years ago that Sony was planning an upgrade system.

A reporter of Japanese news (Serkan Toto) once posted an article back in 2013 about a possible PS4 spec upgrade. It was pure speculation on his part. After the existence of a higher spec PS4 was announced by Sony in July 2016, this same reporter noted that Sony reps approached and informed him how they went into panic mode back in 2013 because of his article, since they thought info of their development of a higher spec PS4 had leaked. This plan of a higher spec PS4 was built in from the start.

And Sony have already stated that every three years (or rather, a mid-cycle upgrade release) is more than enough. Unlike MS who have stated they are done with system generations (pointing to a possibility of upgrades whenever), Sony has stated that generations are still a part of their plans. So, expect a PS5 sometime in 2019, then a Pro in 2022, then PS6 in 2025, and so on...

19 Sep 16 #232
Not sure I will go for this due to lack of money at minute so looking to buy a second hand PS4.

Looks like lots of people will be selling their original PS4! Drop me a DM if you are as I'm interested in buying one.

If Amazon are price-matching the Slim, Xbox OneS and New3DS then surely they'll price match this too?
Sneak76
21 Sep 16 #237
No doubt it will drop in price quite quickly when the realize the error of their ways by not including a UHD disk drive, and therefore the Xbox One S taking sales off them.

21 Sep 16 #238
You would think, would prefer Amazon tbh

21 Sep 16 #239
So gonna pre order tomorrow and i know they take payment but if i see cheaper elsewhere if they start to do bundles os it fairly easy to cancel ny pre order and get refunded?
ronaldmacdonald
21 Sep 16 #240
Yes mate, easy click of a button - if
It's prepping for despatch you need to phone them or just don't accept it from the courier

21 Sep 16 #241
Thank for quick response - im really hoping that bundles with like fifa, skyrim, extra control and that gets released nearer the release date. Sold my ps4 today so looking forward to this one

This is still the best deal I can see online. Pretty incredible what you get for £325. The console itself can output near-4K visuals which is usually the reserve of £1000 PCs. Hot.
Coulomb_Barrier
22 Sep 16 #245
It's true, to get a -comparable- 4K experience on PC as you're getting on PS4 Pro with its upscale tech and you're looking at a considerable outlay.
Kebabcasualty
22 Sep 16 #246
I think the GAME trade in deal is pretty decent. Have been tracking eBay sale prices the last few days and they are generally around the £180 mark for the 500GB console on it's own. Knock £18 off that in eBAY fees and about £12 postage and you are getting £150 in your hand. Leaves you with the same price to pay via Tesco and you get to keep your games I suppose.

anyone else having issues with payment? ive contacted my bank and still seem to be getting a message that says:

Sorry your card was not authorised.
Please check your card details or use another card as you may be using a payment card we do not accept. If the details entered are correct, please contact your card issuer for assistance. For security, if payment details are entered incorrectly 3 times, you will be logged out and taken to the homepage.

Can't make my mind up whether to order or not, just thinking closer to Christmas they might bundle a game.

Dishonoured 2 and call of duty legacy would be games I want. Any suggestions?

i thought this too - but ive got a few games currently that i still havnt finished that ill be able to use.

sold my current PS4 with two games for £250 so for a little extra to upgrade didnt work out too bad for me.
Teath123
22 Sep 16 #251
I'd say wait if you have nothing pressing you want to play, because by christmas they'll totally be decent PS4 Pro bundles. I'm getting this now just because I want to play FF15 on release before I get everything possible spoiled for me.

23 Sep 16 1 #252
Yea I sold my 1tb PS4 a couple of months ago for £280 with a couple of games so isn't going to cost me much to upgrade. Just a matter a timing as want to get the most value as an in no rush.

rufioh
25 Sep 16 #255
Expires today!

I just placed an order and the confirmation page said "expected delivery date Monday 14th November". The product page still says "pre-order now for delivery on release day", so I've emailed Tesco to ask which is correct.
ST3123
25 Sep 16 #256
I expect they will deliver for release date IME the delivery date they show on the order summary is a worst case kind of estimate, more like a 'you should have it before then'

I was considering getting it for the £25 off but having even £324 tied up for over a month with nothing to show for it is too off putting for me. Need to sell my original PS4 to get some money to put towards it, which payment on pre-order just doesn't allow....

Confirmed: Tesco got back to me by email (how great is that, that you can just email them!) to say that Monday is just the end of the delivery window, but it is expected to be delivered on release day.
ronaldmacdonald
28 Sep 16 #260
They delivered my Xbox one s on launch day so I am reasonably confident they will with this, but we have 7 weeks to go - we may see some better offers yet.....
daveevans
3 Oct 16 #261
Is a code likely to be available again before release? Thanks
ST3123
3 Oct 16 1 #262
Pure speculation but I think it quite unlikely since there is only about a month left. I expect though that if you can hang on till black Friday there will be at least equal, if not better deals to be had on it as long as it isn't an instant sell out everywhere but as many are annoyed about the lack of 4K drive and waiting to see what the new Xbox brings I doubt it will be that successful...

I missed the Tesco deal as I just didn't want to pay that much upfront. So now planning on waiting to see if there are any good pre-Christmas deals to be had. If not can always wait as I don't think we are going to see anything that amazing for it this year....
daveevans
3 Oct 16 #263
Thank you for your reply. I think I will hold out for Black Friday. I already have a PS4, so can use that in the meantime.

16 Oct 16 #275
this only works if ur PS4 is immaculate. I took mi e in to check and in a certain light you can see a scratch on the shiny part of the top, so they said it wasn't grade B and wasn't accepted in the offer! check with the store before expecting this to work.
great offer if u can get it tho
zackariah
21 Oct 16 #276
your not doing it right, take your ps4 to game ask them to trade in the ps4 then get them to price match cex who are buying for 164. add the 5% that they beat cex by and you have around 172. cex offer the 164 for discounted which is equivalent to game grade c. mine had scratches galore. its a better deal than the trade in. NOTE mine was a self upgraded day one 1tb (its 147 for 500gb)
