27" at 4k you'll need to be less than 1 metre from the screen to notice any discernible difference.

If you're using it as a computer monitor, then that's likely.
But if you're using it as a TV from a sofa, I'm not surprised you can't notice any difference.

And I think you'll find I can judge black levels and lower power consumption using whatever content. It wasn't even a TV review anyway, the comments about HD were relevant to all and in agreement to the previous posted - the difference from say VHS to DVD and DVD to HD was quite noticeable but above HD, you are hard pressed.

You obviously haven't looked hard enough if you haven't found downloaded or streamed content 'better than Sky HD', you do realise very similar codecs and compression are used for Sky HD as in streaming? Or do you think they transmit raw uncompressed data?

Once you've used a decent Panasonic TV with Firefox OS you won't want Android anywhere near your TV. I just setup a friend's £750 Panasonic this week and I like it even more than WebOS. It's really fast and slick.

Good value!

I have the 8509cbu which is virtually the same but with 3d and possibly some other things.
The problem with 4k is that while lovely, it's not the same jump as sd to hd.
The youview stuff is rubbish, certainly wouldn't replace sky.

I have a top end Benq 4k monitor bought for £450, 27 inch. it's a great monitor but not worth all that money. remember the law of diminishing returns. once you get past a certain quality level you won't get your money's worth anymore. upscaled hd content does look really good. if a 4k TV also had HDR then it's worth it. but trust your eyes. view them in action.

Youview is brilliant on the BT digiboxes but terrible on these Sony TV's.

Turn it off from settings and use the normal Sony TV guide. It's much faster, and allows you to record programmes to a USB drive.

Ive it for more than 6 months. The only downside is the android interface is a bit laggy, and I wish there is more RAM & faster CPU. And the Google cast is not working sometime, which has to restart the TV. Other than that, I still recommend it and I bought it for less than 599 last Christmas period, so can't complain much!

I've had this TV for about 10mths now. I've no complaints, the acid test being that I'd happily buy it again. It has had frequent software updates and the Android OS has improved dramatically, a helluva lot smoother. Kodi installs straight onto the TV from the Play Store.

I see the HDR being mentioned as being part of the the latest software update but to the best of my knowledge the X80 series wasn't included.

I have the 49 inch version of this, with Youview installed, I find youview better layout them Freeview. I've have kodi installed with wookie build it performs better on this TV set then the quad core android boxes. Android works well, chromrcast is the best feature allows me to mirror phone or tablet without any lag. Picture quality is very good compared to my previous 5 year Sony tv. only downside is the Android interface can lag slightly but it's no big deal overall best smart system on any tv. GOOGLE voice works well to.

You can use science but self-proclaimed 'AV experts/aficionados' will still claim they can tell it apart! As someone with what is 20/20 vision, I am perfectly happy with 720p over 1080p (and normally take the former for smaller file-size and less buffering) so 4K is totally wasted on me. I admit as a party-trick on a 4K laptop it is fairly mind-blowing but not something I 'must have'.

Got this TV last year on Amazon Lightning deal for similar money, at this price it's a steal but I found with its IPS panel, the black level isn't that strong (compared to the VA panel in my old BRAVIA W-series) and really only chose this for bigger, 4K-compatible, Android OS, slimmer/more modern design and vastly lower power consumption.

Price good, size good, but to be honest this is towards the entry level end for sony. Go for the KD55X509 if you can find it as the panel is better supports 3d as per a comment above and is a better all rounder - motion and panning are better..

Can be bought from most reputable dealers example below from richer sounds with 6 year g'tee.

'smaller file size/less buffering'?

Are you judging your TV reviews on illegally downloaded/streamed content?

I've never seen anything downloaded/streamed that was better or even the same quality as a Sky HD box so it's no good to use as a benchmark.

Sorry have to disagree with you about Youview, works fine, and while it doesn't have the recording ability, it is by far the best TV software out there. Sky's new Q might good but it lacks easy operation and the Sky + box is the most awful piece of Hardware i've ever used, probably due to it being 12 years old and Sky milking it for that long.

I bought this TV last xmas for £560 (£600 minus 5% student discount on Amazon) - great TV and good value even at £670! Before I bought it was a little concerned about the refresh rate, but it's never been an issue - picture quality is fantastic. I guess one downside is that the Youview menus are a little laggy, but I've had a BT Youview box in the past and that was just as laggy (I have a box so don't need Youview anyway)

I have this TV. Paid £720 a few months ago with 5 year warranty from Richer Sounds.

I still use an external freeview (PVR) as the inbuilt one is poor. As others have said the menus can be laggy although I feel they are better after the last update or I am just getting used to them. My biggest issue is changing the HDMI source seems to send a command for my soundbar to turn off each time which is very annoying.

Anything in 4K though looks amazing. Hoping Sony announce the PS4 in 4K on Thursday!

No point in buying a 4K TV if it doesn't have hdr unless it is over 65 inches. Better of buying a decent 1080p set instead. 4K only has negative effects on everything that isn't 4K having to upscale. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice TV if viewing 4K but you have zero benefits over 1080p at this screen size.

Until the next new thing arrives...... you will be forever chasing new tech, for most people, this will do just fine for now. Just my opinion, but theres no need to be an early adopter of new tech as you invariably get your fingers burned. Remember when Flat Screen CRT 's came out, they were "the best", then LCD TV's were "the best" then HD came out and that was "the best" then 4k was "the best" now its all 4k HDR is "the best". I absolutely guarantee you that 4k HDR will be replaced in the near future as 8k is already on its way.

If you're not an audiophile who HAS to have the best tech and you just want to watch Corrie, this will be fine

Oh boy, you realise that the upscale adds false information to fill those extra pixels. It definitely is a plus that they upscale or else the picture would be terrible. 1080p on a 1080p set has no false extra pixels thrown in it is lossless and better no matter how good the upscale may be. The important factors of a good set is the panel, processing rate, blacks levels and colour reproduction. High resolution is only of benefit when you sit really close or have a really big TV it is a fact. When I shop for a new TV i'm looking for hdr, not resolution (the viewable difference). If I want a massive TV (65"+) then definitely get 4K. 4k

Did you watch the UHD/4k from the 4K blu-ray or tv ? There is currently one channel in UK from BT wich is in 4K.

Get yourself a 4k blu ray player and then 4k blu ray disc and see the different.

You do realise all pictures on a TV are made up of colour dots don't you, is not real :smirk:.
If you think you won't notice 4k on anything less than 65" you're missing out big time. Panel quality aside your theory of sit really close or have really big TV is mistaken. As for HDR that is a processed image the same as upscaling is and both make big differences in their own way.

But by all means you stick to your HD set at 60"

Your joking right? Sony tv's especially the entry grade ones are renowned for having laggy menus. No amount of patches and updates will fix an under powered/overworked cpu/ram configuration I'm afraid. My KDL50W8 cannot change inputs for the first 30 seconds of turning it on! And that's not even menu based lol. However, I bought it as it has one the fastest response times which is great for gaming.

It isn't a theory it is a fact. Manufacturers may try to tell you otherwise and the reason 4K TVs may look really good in store is because they are being broadcasted with 4K content and you walk straight upto it. I have a couple of 4K hdr TVs and it trumps my 1080p TV when viewing hdr content (in 4k) but for everything else under 4K the quality doesn't quite compare. I guess you buy really expensive hdmi cables too. Lol. Keep on upscaling

This is the setup I run (x8509 running Freesat and PS4)

Plus points
- The remote will control most of the PS4 functions / Apps (I can use it in Spotify, Sky App, Netflix etc)
- Powering on the PS4 will power on the TV to the correct channel
- Netflix and Sky App look great
- The pause button on the Sony remote SKIPS THE ADVERTS ON THE SKY APP! :-D
- Ability to install a BRAVIA TV App on the PS4

Negatives
- The remote doesnt control all the functions on the PS4 (i.e no button mapping) so often cant do basic tasks with it. Perfect example is the Sky App. I can browse and select and play, but since there is no button mapped to "O" (which is commonly used for a back/cancel function) I can exit a finished program to go back to a list, or go up a menu. Nightmare.
- Powering on the TV takes a few seconds.
- If you place the PS4 into rest mode, then power off the TV before it finishes, the final signal from the PS4 will power the TV back on.

Hope that helps. Picture quality is excellent.

Hi, we purchased our TV just before Xmas after a lot of deliberation and review reading I plumped for the 4k Sammy JU6800 55" went to store and it was next to a Sony 55" 1080p both playing 1080p Bluray, but it looked noticeably better on the 1080p set... What the Fudge I thought but talking the sales chap it made sense, often 1080p content looks better at native resolution and the 1080p set would be better for fast motion gaming and sports because the panel had much higher refresh and so better motion compensation. I went 1080p because the majority of my content for the next couple of years will be 1080p. When we get fibre broadband or Sky Q when its reasonably priced I will look to go 4k and by then HDR, 100-200hz panels should be the norm, for now I'm very happy with 1080p as for old sky HD (720p/1080i), Bluray, Xbone and PC its all 1080p for me and from what I saw in the stores I visited and have read online 1080p TVs are often the best choice for 1080p content. I think its not a question of just how far your going to be sitting but are you going to be using 4k content because if your not I wouldn't panic about having to have 4k right now. It also depends how long you keep your TV for, I'm happy to change it in a year or two and retire the Sony to the bedroom after 18-24 months although secretly hoping for 4k projectors under £1200 by then :-)

I bought the 8005 model on the Amazon lightning deal about a year ago .. initially I was close several times to sending it back due to the lag and bugs in the Android OS .. however Sony came good with the promised updates and I now have a 55 TV that can run MKV and MP4 4K media from a WD media server over wifi , it also accepted my 120GB samsung HDD and now I can preset and record any tv channel via the TV Guide , I have KODI loaded as an APP .. which opens up a whole world of TV channels (in 1080P & UHD) ! 4K runs smooth over youtube (preinstalled app) Wifi is fast - no need for a hardwired connection. There are better curved 3D screens on the market but from a pricepoint / functionality and with the UHD media finally catching up - superb !

Listen if you want to keep your CRT TV be my guest.
You keep talking about 1080p but there is no broadcast content in 1080p so up scaling is only applicable to 720p in the real world. In such cases my 4k TV looks far superior to my pervious 1080p TV for Sky etc.

As for 1080p the laws of diminishing returns apply and any difference is far less noticeable, so if that is all you ever watch (which we both know it isn't) there would be far lesser effect of up scaling. However a new HDR 4k TV will be able to demonstrate a wider colour gamut in up scaling even the best pictures for example. As for you HDR 4k it is unlikely unless you have a newer compliant HDR 4k you are getting any massive benefit from HDR. HDR on older TVs is largely compliant and does varying amount to the image unlike proper HDR.

As you are so found of that luddite on the worst review site around CNET, it seems even he can see some improvements in good up scaling albeit it seems begrudgingly http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/can-4k-tvs-make-1080p-look-better/

You sound just the sort of person who buys into Apple's Retina standard  - Having said all that if you are happy in your cave with your CRT why change
applepieman
6 Sep 16 #84
A TV in store will have many variables especially 2 sets from different manufacturers playing different content side by side. Panel quality will also have a lot to do with it as well and as I say above the difference form a pure 1080p source will be subjective to a degree. 1080p provides an excellent picture and is difficult to artificially improve.

I would however take issue with the rest of your reasoning here.

By the way, don't listen to people who says "no 4k" "other brand is best etc..." they are xxx to see TV lol

Cheers...

55" ones?

Should perhaps have added - entry level big brand.

You are completely right. 4K is the future for when more source material becomes available but hdr and oled is the big change at the moment not 4K resolution. It is amazing how people buy into the numbers and just don't get it.

Nice tv, good price, only problem is Tesco. I work for Tesco and I have seen how their tv's are delivered to the stores, without any care whatsoever!! Always have bought my tv's from John Lewis, their 5 year guarantee is worth a lot!!

if the TV is not HDR then it won't play the new Xbox One S or if the rumours are true the new PS4 K. Especially since someone said the latest update wasn't an HDR update and probably won't get the HDR update. Either way double check if your buying for gaming or planning on getting one of the new 4K blu-ray players.

Old man shouts at a cloud. I don't watch watch tv at all these days - just Netflix films on a Nook tablet in bed with 3 pillows. Pretty good I reckon - for a couple of hours. Don't read the newspapers or tv because of their lack of real new insight and constant recycling of old facts in new wrappings - interspersed with purely commercial brainwashing. I access varied news sources from my Nook a couple of times a day. Some of the technical comments about the latest tv's remind me of when I was in my twenties and heavily into top-range hi-fi. My vocab was all about the technicalities of frequency response and the 'authenticity' of bass and treble qualities. I think I'll have a nap now and listen to some Hendrix on my Bowers and Wilkins headphones... zzzzzzzz.

So you're getting buffering over your internal network? Very slick. I wasn't criticising your source of material, just asking the question, as there is a fair difference between 720p and 1080p if your source material is good.

Lies. Xbox one S will work perfectly

So you need 100" TV to enjoy 4k at 1.8m and 55" TV to enjoy 480p at 6.1m? Neither makes any sense...
samfau2
6 Sep 16 #103
Ignoring the fact one is 4k and one is 1080P. How does this compare to the KDL55W805C in terms of picture quality?

6 Sep 16 1 #104
Download the mobdro apk onto a USB on a computer then install Es explorer on your TV.

Inser USB dongle and use ES to install it. Simple

Whilst your downloading the mobdro apk download the Aptoide tv apk too

Assuming you have a full hd model likely to not be worth changing until you are watching allot of 4k content.
sirteuk
7 Sep 16 #106
Are you judging your TV reviews on illegally downloaded/streamed content?

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has confirmed that watching pirated video streams online does not break any copyright laws.
RuudBullit
7 Sep 16 #107
Again, you've missed the point. I was asking the question because the chap was saying there's no difference between 720p and 1080p. If he's downloading torrents or streaming on kodi he won't be able to tell the difference because these streams are hardly bluray quality, even if the uploaders label them as '1080p'.
AndiTails
7 Sep 16 #108
You're reading the graph completely wrong.

You need a 46" to enjoy 4k at 1.8m.
If you had a 100" TV at 1.8m, you'd notice the difference between 4k and 8k.

And at 6.1m, you'd only just be able to tell the difference between 480p and 720p on a 55in set - so anything higher than that would be a waste.

Hi All,

I have just bought a Xbox One S which apparently has HDR. I was looking for around a 40inch 4k HDR television, purely for gaming, what do you guys reccomend? My friend told me I'd want a 10-bit panel TV as that is 'proper' HDR. Any info would be great!

Thanks,
ronaldmacdonald
7 Sep 16 #110
Cool - 2gb version I guess, the rest of us saddos are on pre-order for the 500gb. I have a 10bit 4K panel. It is not officially HDR. You can get 10bit HDR panels supporting HDR.
applepieman
7 Sep 16 1 #111
Ideally you would want a premium ultra HD certified TV which has premium HDR to be guaranteed the best result with xbox one s. Not sure there is, or likely to be an 40" versions of this imminently. Without this 'standard guarantee' HDR will be very hit and miss or pot luck in its final result. You would be best looking at the standard, try here e.g. http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/ultra-hd-premium and making a decision on what to go for.

How does this TV compare to the Hisense 55M7000 please anyone? I'm really not very technical lol.

Unless I change whole setup, I'm talking just for watching Sky, mostly HD/some SD (and maybe Sky Q if I get it). No games consoles or other hdmi stuff to connect into it (apart from a 6 year old 5.1 surround sound thing that I only use for films).

Have got the Hisense on preorder with JL but would also need a new unit for probably £150-£350 on top of that, just because of the stand positions, whereas I'm guessing this TV will just sit on the current unit and the TV overhang slightly...

Do you have a source for this?

9 Sep 16 #119
YouView was never intended to replace Sky, but to give you a great alternative to FreeView. It's actually pretty damned good at what it does in my opinion, and those of the reviews I've come across. Comparing YouView to Sky is like comparing a good-quality bike with a good-quality car; they're both designed to do a similar thing, but for very different reasons and in different ways.

Have you ever even looked at a 4K TV?? Sure, some manufacturers struggle to upscale non-4K content, but Sony TVs do a great job. The fact that they are responsible for making the programmes and movies (think Breaking Bad or James Bond) as well as the cameras that film them and most of the projectors that put them into cinemas means they've got a massive amount of data and expertise to draw upon. Of course upscaling will never achieve true 4K results, but what Sony manages is pretty damned good.

The Marshmallow update hasn't yet been released. Android has already been improved massively, though. I've got a 55X85 and 43X83, and have seen them come on in leaps and bounds with each incremental update.

What, you mean like the ones I've been getting every month or two for both of my Sony Android TVs?:sunglasses:
BadPseudonym
9 Sep 16 #123
That's on some of the older, 2013 models. The beauty of Android is that, unless YouTube (owned by Google) decided that it no longer wanted to run on Android (also owned by Google) devices, it'll always be there. There's a risk with other TV manufacturers of third party apps you depend on becoming obsolete, but app developers removing themselves from Android is business suicide. It'll be around on this TV for a long, long time.

Hi there. Sorry for the late reply
Download ES File explorer and then down load sideload launcher (apk) onto using Es file explorer or a laptop*
*laptop = you must put it onto a usb stick and plug it into the tv.
The same goes for modbro
There's been some difficulty installing modbro onto fire sticks recently so maybe put it onto a USB and do it that way.
Hope this helps and I'm not responsible for any damage loss or injury caused :stuck_out_tongue:
Enjoy

13 Sep 16 #126
Very well said I own the 43x830 brilliant at upscalling non 4k content, Evan some SD sources look almost HD, to achieve this Sony realised the only way for constant great image quality and blur free pictures was to use a dedicated video Processing chip, they use the X reality pro engine it's the only way to get pictures constantly. That why with Samsung tvs the image is not always great because they use software to achieve the same result, hence why Samsung tvs have motion blur issues.
