Product information

Sony’s stunning audio-visual showpiece represents a titanic shift in home entertainment. Ushering in eye-popping 4K HDR, this breaks the mould of regular panels by packing its 55” screen with a greater colour palette. This depth-enhancing tech is backed by Sony’s innovative TRILUMONOS backlight, crisp 800Hz motion rate and intuitive Android Smart platform. This even has built-in Playstation Now, letting you play selected PS3 games without needing a console. At the cutting-edge of TV technology, the XD80 is a complete hub that will change the complexion of your living room.

Plumb The Colourful Depths Of HDR

Forays into colour-boosting High Dynamic Range (HDR) have begun, and Sony are one of the forerunners. As members of the newly-founded UHD Alliance, they've delivered top-shelf HDR with a staggering 10-bit colour depth. This means that there are over a billion individual colours to deepen your view and show shades you’ve never seen in home entertainment before. Usually, studios are forced to dilute the colour of their shows and films to fit on our TVs. Now, HDR screens like the XD80 can channel content from studio-to-living room with the same precision and utterly otherworldly hues.

Rich, Ravishing 4K

To respond to screens getting bigger, brands have packed their screens with more pixels. This 55” screen has four times the number of pixels than 1080p HD TVs, delivering stunning realism, natural motion and incredible detail.

Up-Scaling 4K X-Reality PRO

Enhance everything you watch on your Sony Bravia TV with the 4K X-Reality PRO and improved X1 processor. This engine boosts the picture quality of everything from dazzling 1080p Blu-ray Disc™ movies to very low-resolution Web video to 4K. After analysing each pixel and comparing patterns, the system restores detail lost in compression and transmission. The system also reduces noise and reproduces optimum contrast, colour and sharpness. The result is that you experience stunning 4K picture quality with better clarity, for anything you watch.

Delightful TRILUMINOS Display

Sony’s TRILUMINOS Display Technology expands the range of colours of that you see on more conventional LED displays, injecting images with more lustre. The eye-popping picture is treated with deeper reds, more natural greens and sharper blues, giving your shows and films a richer palate. Combined with image-deepening HDR, this tech will make your viewing simply extraordinary.

Crisp Motion With Motionflow XR 800Hz, every image on the screen refreshes at a higher rate than normal. Sports and fast-moving action look noticeably smoother, sharper and more natural, with reduced blur and judder.

Super-Smart Android

Your Smart TV has just got smarter with Android. Developed by Google, you'll be able to enjoy seamless entertainment, intelligent search and the latest apps from the likes of Google Play and Netflix. All the personalisation, intelligence and entertainment of your Smartphone or tablet can be easily viewed on the Sony TV too, taking your viewing experience to the next level. Enjoy built-in Google Cast, which lets you beam content from your smartphone straight to the big screen, Voice Search and hundreds of awesome apps.*

*Use of this TV requires consents to Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Simulated UI. Applications availability varies by country and device

Playstation Now

This fresh feature from Sony lets you play a rich catalogue of PS3 games through your TV. All you need is a Playstation 3 or 4 controller and a subscription to the service (sold separately) to get gaming.

Youview Catch-Up

In addition to a wealth of online entertainment, this set comes with built-in YouView. The seven-day scroll back TV guide brings together catch up TV from across BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5. You can also enjoy over 70 live TV channels and radio stations for free, such as BBC 1, 2 & 3, ITV, Channel 4, E4, Channel 5, 5 USA, ITV 2 and Dave.**

Super-Slim Silver Slate Design

Sony TVs are renowned for their chic shapes, and the XD80 takes this a step further. The sleek, skinny aluminium frame has convenient cable-management features at the back and through the stand, so you can hide unsightly wires. This way, your set will look beautiful on-and-off.

Its a good price so hot for the deal.. but

Its the wrong time to buy into 4K, there is just too much uncertainty with standards esp around HDR, as i read recently, 4K is just new tyres for you old car. 4K OLED now that is a brand new car.

22 Sep 16 4 #47
3 years is a long time mate. I had my LCD TV since 2009 and had been waiting patiently for OLEDs to become affordable. But in the end I went for another LCD last week.

Why? Because yes, OLEDs are becoming affordable, but they still have their own problems. Poor colour accuracy, uneven backlighting, slow processing tech... This is still early days for OLED TVs - in the future you will see them change dramatically, they will be ultra thin (a few millimetres), flexible, and will be able to be stuck up on the wall with blu tac pretty much.

That's the OLED I was waiting for but that's at least 5 years away. You can wait forever or you can just buy something now and enjoy it.

True, but if you can wait, it might prove to be fruitful, no point investing now if the tech isn't ready and how long in tech terms is a long time? sub £1000.00 OLED I would say before 2020 thats only 3 years away.

Personally I'd wait until the 4K OLED falls into your budget. Once you've seen OLED in the flesh, you won't anything else.

Xbox Scorpio will drive a lot of 4K to sales next year, 2017 is the year to buy.
slannmage to QSECOFR

1080p OLED is not going to look as good as 4K LED, it's not future proofed either and it'll be a low end OLED panel which will not be as good, will have high latency, black clipping etc etc.

OLED is seen as this amazing thing.. I don't get why, there are good and bad panels like LCD, I mean the iPhone 7 is the highest rated Smartphone screen by displaymate. It's LCD but Apple are putting the effort into to beat OLED with their LCDs, both technologies are coming on.

+ OLED suffers from screen burn like Plasma did and after 2 years if you put your OLED vs a brand new one of the same model, you'll see colours have faded, you wont see that on LCD as they last a lot longer.

It's not the be all end all.... you'd be a fool to buy one in 1080p over this as it probably wont have a wider gamut than this TV which HDR has to meet near 93% DCI-P3.

my apologies, not used to hkud app.

I would beg to disagree. As a Plasma owner I have no intention of upgrading to the 4k hype yet. oled and plasma are best tech for large 1080p screens, plasma are now phased out as they are expensive to run and can't run 4k amd since that's where the market is going, they are dropped. oled is its replacement and after seeing oled vs led I can only concede you would go for led on cost.

Bad mate couldn't believe they could sell a tv for over £1k with that sort of picture! In the day it's not too bad but at night with the lights off it was awful. Real shame most makers are abandoning 3D as a lot of us still enjoy it and buy the discs. The whole HDR and HDCP 2.2 roll out is a complete f**k up. You're going to have people with recent receivers that are HDMI 2.0 but not HDCP 2.2 compliant wondering why their 4K player isn't working and some TV's don't have the right amount of colours to be true HDR but are still being marketed with HDR stuck on them. Since when was Baldrick appointed head of the electronics industry?

Not sure why some people think oleds have such problems, I have the LG OLED C6, it looks incredible, the colours are stunning, perfect black level, pure whites, no uneven backlighting what so ever (OLED's pixels actually produce their own light), perfect viewing angle and games are great too, about 34ms lag in game mode.

None of the vignetting like on last years models, screen burn goes away so quickly too, its not even an issue like it was on a plasma. I can't cope with the horrible backlight bleed and banding on LCDs any more, get OLED now and enjoy it for a few years. I wouldn't go back to LCD.

i've had my LCD now for 9 and a half years :disappointed:
i got fed up waiting for OLED a couple of years ago and bought a Sony KDL55905, big mistake
altho it has brilliant reviews and is a high end TV it still had LCD issues, the most anoying issue for me was the bluring/ ghosting effect while playing games, it had a strobing feature to help with this but it reduced the brightness a lot and flickered
tjc2005
23 Sep 16 1 #65
Funny you should mention the KDL55905, that is what I have upgraded from (we also have the 46" in the living room) , I haven't had any issues with games ghosting or anything on them, and still think it's a fantastic TV. With great game latency.

I still think it holds its own against many of the more recent sets if not better, the black level is pretty amazing for an LCD, apart from the viewing angles, they aren't great. I only upgraded because I wanted 4k OLED and now I can't stand sony after a poor customer service experience with them, still can't deny they make some top sets.

There's always been a Baldrick in the consumer electronics industry, every manufacturer wants to get to market first or create new sales regardless of future proofing anything. If your TV isn't very future proof you either put up with missing (new) features or buy a new one, it's win-win for manufacturers.

after looking at loads of reviews it was easier for me to spot the faults, if reviewers never pointed them out i probably wouldn't have seen them, now i look for the faults :disappointed:
i went from a 32" to a 55" which probably made me more sensitive to the blur, i wasn't used to the size and i was close to the screen
maybe i should've went for the 46" instead

i noticed it a lot while playing infamous second son, scenes at night, the street lights seemed to blur more than my old panasonic set

That's a great TV tho especialy for gaming, i'm just realy picky now after doing so much research online about different problems

Spend the extra for the KS7000 from Samsung.

Oh and OLED is not the best currently. As I've said before on here, burn in is a very real problem unless you stick to paid media without static logos etc on screen. The issues is as bad as early plasmas on the 4K LG OLED I got the beginning of the year.

Don't get me wrong the image quality is superb, and everyone loves inky blacks, but whites still aren't white, and all these OLED screens have that stupid curve gimmick going on. So they become useless in a brightly lit room due to the fact that it causes a ridiculous amount of reflections in addition to the fact that OLED can't even touch half the brightness levels of the top LCD models.

I'm not an advocate of LCD TVs either. I clung on for dear life to the final plasma Panny ever released. The newer HDR sets changed that though. Especially when calibrated.

OLED hasn't kicked off its just too expensive to manufacture and has its own pitfalls that haven't been addressed yet. OLED has been around for years already and many tv manufacturors have simply stopped bothering to try and use it in their consumer tv's LG seem to be the only company really trying with OLED and your looking at over 1k for a 1080p set 55". LED is still going to be around for a long time yet. maybe in 5 years time OLED will hit mainstream pricing. HDR is the real star though. A proper 10 bit hdr panel will do more for picture quality than any led to oled or resolution change.

you can auto hide web browser toolbars and the taskbar but it's hard to avoid some things like in game huds
OLED isnt as bad as plasma when it comes to burn in tho, you have to have the same image on for a long time for it to stay on the screen

OLEDs have some problems:

they get hot/ use more power
there's a small chance of burn in/ image retention
they don't get as bright as LCD
and they have a shorter life span

But LCDs have a lot more

QLEDs that should be out in 2018 should be as good as OLED without most of the problems
i might get OLED or QLED

I was at LG's UK head office just yesterday looking at OLED tech (I work in Digital Signage).
Their current OLED range is rated at 400 hours before burn-in will occur.

That's a lot of one channel...!

Unless, of course, you like to watch moving images. OLED, unless you're buying crazy-price professional monitors, just isn't where it needs to be. Massive loss of detail in dark scenes and serious blurring of fast-moving content. Better off spending some of that money on a high-end LCD and saving the rest.
BadPseudonym

Have you considered the XD93? I'm working on getting my wife's authorisation for one of those at the moment.

23 Sep 16 #145
They can still be uneven, I mean the early days of OLED were grim... PSVitas all look like this http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/143293i7B166F895075449B/image-size/original?v=mpbl-1&px=-1

That's obviously with the camera exposure up, but you can still see it in a pitch black room looking at a pure black image, thought obviously not as pronounced.

Now they're so much better, but it's not backlight, which they still can bleed light in blacks on low end panels, the Vita does as a popular example and until the GS5, the Galaxy phones did among others.

However like I said it's not backlight, it's the pixels themselves, every single one is a living thing, it's not a filter like LCD. So you'll have fade over time, maybe one part of the TV constantly sees one colour more than another and isn't as strong. You'll see screen burn like a plasma if you have text in one spot for too long, never play patch 1.0 of Bloodborne, I've see that Bloodborne word burnt into an OLED panel. Modern OLEDs still do this... http://forums.androidcentral.com/attachments/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge/225691d1461675153t-how-bad-amoled-screen-burn-problem-13029548_1199958916680986_654565150368753890_o.jpg

On the Whites is where you'll notice how good the OLED panel is, a lot of the time you'll see parks of the screen that have a very faint bias towards one colour, it can look really bad. Where as LCDs have it on Blacks due to the backlight....

If you want a TV for 5 years and you're very picky, I wouldn't recommend and OLED, not to mention they've got this problem with ghosting right now. The latency on most of them is quite high right now, but I mean when a pixel goes from black to white and vice versa, you'll notice this weird trail, that's my biggest pet peeve with lots of OLEDs atm. On Galaxy Phones if you scroll up and down very quickly, look at the text, if you're on a dark theme it'll look a bit purple. You don't notice it on LCDs so much...

Any ways I don't think OLED is quite there for the average consumer, if you're rich then go ahead and blow £5000+ on a good one.

I live in York and that particular store looks like an old BHS. Cannot see them surviving in this climate much longer. Not sure what their business model is but I know if they carry on in York like they are I cannot see it lasting the next 5 years. As for John Lewis I feel they are a much bigger company that is doing extremely well as a department store and think that buying a product of the same price and warranty I would definitely buy from John Lewis. Sorry to lecturer you about it but I am only stating my opinion. Maybe you have a different approach to what I am lecturing maybe you know something I don't? Don't OLED colours deteriorate over time? I remember reading an article on it last year that the blues start to deteriorate almost as soon as you start using it and fade faster than red and greens, probably your average user wouldn't notice or care all that much but the sets are marketed towards audiophiles and videophiles that care about theses things.

Maybe the technology has moved on since the article was written though.

26 Sep 16 #165
OLED suffers from screen burn like Plasma did and after 2 years if you put your OLED vs a brand new one of the same model, you'll see colours have faded, you wont see that on LCD as they last a lot longer.

It's not the be all end all.... you'd be a fool to buy one in 1080p over this as it probably wont have a wider gamut than this TV which HDR has to meet near 93% DCI-P3.
What utter tosh... Screen burn is possible on all tv's if an image is left there long enough. The Oled's have a screen wipe facility that happens when the tv is on standby to stop this. Like all new technology's there were issues at the start. Now that is no longer a problem.

As for HDR and the wider colour gamut newer 4K Oled's can do this, however they also can do deeper blacks and as a self illuminating pixel like plasma you don't get light bleed unlike lcd tv's. This is the new numbers game that LCD can go higher brightness, but is it really going to be such a game changer that you can have some very bright spots on the tv. Watched a few demos in store and sorry really could not see what the fuss was about.
Go for the best picture for your eyes.
Also I would wait if you can as the new broadcasting for wider colour gamut will also be chaining though most new tv's should get a software upgrade to cope with it, there is not gurantee that this will happen. As noted by company's like Samsung who will sell you future proof TV's then not deliver on that promise.....

LG's range of TV's have a system called 'SUPER UHD' and 'HDR Plus'. What this means is their TV's support both standards of HDR (HDR10 and Dolby Vision) so are as future proofed as you can get right now. Most other brands of TV only support HDR10 or DolbyVision (One or the other).

"Plumb The Colourful Depths Of HDR
Forays into colour-boosting High Dynamic Range (HDR) have begun, and Sony are one of the forerunners. As members of the newly-founded UHD Alliance, they've delivered top-shelf HDR with a staggering 10-bit colour depth. This means that there are over a billion individual colours to deepen your view and show shades you’ve never seen in home entertainment before. Usually, studios are forced to dilute the colour of their shows and films to fit on our TVs. Now, HDR screens like the XD80 can channel content from studio-to-living room with the same precision and utterly otherworldly hues."

OLED will have a much more uniform backlight whereas all LCD/LED suffer in this respect. Also depends on how much 4k HDR content you will be watching. I know I will watch very little until it becomes allot more common place or cheaper.

I agree the HDR will bring much more benefit than 4k but just wondering though how much content will be available. I guess in 2 years time the expectation is allot.

The XD8005 has a VA panel running at 50Hz (processing rate 400Hz), which has slightly better contrast than the IPS panel but slightly worse colour accuracy.

The XD8599 has an IPS panel running at 100Hz (processing rate 800Hz, says 1000Hz on some websites) which has a slightly better colour accuracy, but worse contrast than a VA panel.

The XD8599 has the X1 processor, which enhances images in various ways. It also has a different stand design.

I will never buy a Sony again after the piece of horsecrap I bought in 2009. It was a Sony Bravia 52", awful design. I think what topped it all was the fact that they couldn't even be bothered to stick their brand name on the TV straight.

Hi sarvo, the 8599 has a 100hz native panel , the 8005 only 50hz , 8599 has the upgraded X1 processor, 8005 hasn't . 8599 is 800hz , 8005 is 400.
I'm glad I paid the extra as I am really impressed with it - once I get to grips with the android OS

The free sound bar is great too , clear sound and links like a dream
The stand is the same on both models and both have the remote with mic .

Completely agree. All the manufacturers are it and and it needs to be regulated a lot more. LG one of the worst for false claims, claiming some of their IPS sets have contrast ratios of a billion squillion to one or whatever. It's ridiculous! Great deal this one though. Hot.

For those folk undecided between the XD8005, XD8599 and the XD8505C here is a link to specs comparison.

Thanks for the reply, guess I'll be waiting a while longer before I invest in 4K/HDR.

Hi Robbyj, How you finding your 8599? I am still struggling to make my mind between 8599 or 9305. 9305 is 10bit panel, where as 8599 is not according to displayspecifications website.

I ended up going for the Samsung UE55KS8000 in the end, thought the HDR and motion was much better, although it was a good £550 more. This still looks a great value set though for the money.

Too tiny for a 4K. Is there any in the 75 inches+. Will nicely double as a radiator this coming winter for my living room, then a sauna in the summer.

Somewhere in the settings on the Xbox under display, there's a config thing that puts loads of images/lines etc on the screen and asks you to adjust the colours.

It's a better sound bar from John Lewis , I think richer sounds also have this deal

6 Oct 16 1 #253
I ordered the 8005 on Friday , John Lewis called me on Sunday to say sound bar had arrived early, so I upgraded to 8599 upon collection of sound bar Sunday ,and picked tv up Tuesday , loving it so far
