What is wrong with the UK that we still having these prehistoric broadband connections using BT telephone wires.

I've recently got a hyperoptic connection in London, and I pay £28 for 100Mb download AND upload. It's a disgrace that BT are still relevant and shows how backwards the UK is with technology. I smell a lot of lobbying from them to ensure they can still lease their lines.

Just want to add the above is completely unlimited INCLUDING this other stupid concept of 'Phone Line Rental'. These old companies need to go downhill ASAP as we should be better than this.

I have virgin and sky because i work at home I need two internet connections in case one goes down.
Virgin media has been broken for me since May of this year. Packet loss due to them oversubscribing their network. 200mbit hahaha can't even get 2 mbit most of the time.

it's broken right now too. 32% packet loss according to my router.
Sky on the other hand has failed once in the six months i've had it. For 5 mintues.
Sky took over a very good ISP bethere so the core network is good at least.

Virgin media ping: 16-32ms
Sky ping: 6-7ms

I know which ISP I prefer, and it's not virgin. And I'm a network engineer. Not an armchair one that looked up what VDSL and DSLAM means but one with CCIE qualification.

Sadly I ordered just before they upped it to 100, so I'll just get 75. But before I bought the rep told me on the chat that once I've paid the first bill, can call up to pay the line rental all upfront for a discount.

​The same as any company selling a subscription service, they offer you a fantastic joining deal in the hope you forget to look for a better deal at the end of the contract, and given that many companies do this it must pay off for them.

I wouldn't recommend topcashback for big cashback either. Took over a year for me to get the £100 cashback for EE broadband. QuidCo seem to track faster and pay out easier.

Totally agree! So many people think BT is the best provider and are willing to pay more, but they are atrocious! The underlying problem is actually Openreach which is a separate part of BT. Openreach don't do a very good job these days which is why things go wrong. And it can take them a while to get everything fully fixed (in the interim they broke other things for me! :neutral_face: ).

BT retail is very poor at taking calls, understanding the problem and chasing up properly with Openreach. Their call centre leaves a lot to be desired. In my experience, Sky has excellent call centres across UK and Europe that are staffed with people that are well trained and will get the job done for you (note they still have to depend on Openreach and their incompetence, but they seem to manage them better). Because of the dependency on Openreach there will always be a bumpy ride when things go wrong, Sky is the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

I agree with both of you. I left sky to be with Bt and they have the worst customer service. They did rectify an issue in regards to my Internet cutting out but only when I complained to them for numerous months.

My contract is up in February so can't wait to go back to sky, I hope by then fibre gets the green light in my area as currently on an 8mb connection is Painful! Especially after moving from my old house where I got close to 18mb :disappointed:.

Get away from the big providers and look at some independents.

Don't know Origin's pricing but I'd say Sky and Plusnet are probably the sweetspot. Plusnet, although part of BT still runs their own well trained call centre separate from BT's.

£20 connection fee and £9.95 postage. Got activated a few days ago. Getting 9mb download speed, very happy, will cost almost nothing for a year. If the cash back and the prepaid card come through.

I was last with Sky last year and got 16 Mb/s (Actual Speeds) from their Broadband Service.
I am currently with Plusnet and also get the same 16Mb/s speed.

Upon seeing this deal, I just visited their site and entered my address and phone number, but the projected speeds are significantly lower showing as only between 4.8 - 10.0 Mb/s.

Any ideas why it is quoted as much slower than was before?
Can it be because of this deal Sky are limiting speeds?

The only fear I have with this is that as the broadband is provided 'free' then when you have problems you aren't losing a paid for service and, apart from the impact on their reputation, they don't have to fix it quickly.

Virgin have their own fiber network and Sky uses the BT infrastructure , you cannot compare unless you are running boardband with Virgin and Sky using the same BT line

The TV / laptop require you to pay £5 a month so you end up paying 5*12= £60 more, but it should still be a good deal assumning the TV / laptop worth more than £60+ £100 (prepaid master card) = £160

It is just an estimation base on the distance from your address to the closest telephone exchange, you should still be getting the same speed.

AFAIK they do not limit speed because they are doing a deal. And you have 28 days cooling off period if you do not like Sky and can switch back to Plusnet or whoever you like.

My line has just gone active with this deal. TCB has tracked at £73.73 and my £100 card is on its way to me. Line rental is £17.40, bb is free and I'm paying £8/m for all inclusive calls. We've been with EE the last 10 months, until my line got slammed, and the bb was woeful. Never had an issue with sky so my husband signed up as a new customer - had to slightly mis-spell our surname though as it recognised us during the sign up process because we currently have sky TV.

having just switched from sky to bt, both have absolutely useless customer service. sky have billed me for September and October despite the fact im no longer a customer.
tried calling but no answer after 20 mins on hold, online chat has been unavailable for 2 days.
there is no email address for support.

connection speed was pretty constant except a 2 week period where it was dire which a new router sorted the issue.
also had regular DNS issues which needed a hard reboot of the router to fix.

bt connection has been solid, no issues but only a month in.

​I have been on a 100mb package with virgin and the speeds during peak times drop to under 5mb. Even with their own network they have not managed to sort this out, has been going on for over 6 months.

Strangely enough I am currently with sky. If I try to signup for this offer as a change of tenancy (new customer) then I only get offered fibre broadband. Is sky discontinuing normal broadband?

Origin are inept in the extreme. They left almost their entire customer base go without any connection (nor any way of restoring a connection) for several weeks because they failed to even begin transitioning them off a platform which was closing down (the closure was announced a full year ahead!). They also massively messed up the billing, resulting in several customers being billed 6 months later for a service never delivered.

Their call centre was staffed at the time almost entirely by "apprentices", all earning something like £3/hour.

This is not a company anybody should support.

Had this installed at my mothers house last week. Getting about 14 megabits per sec on broadband. Sky go working well on my laptop connected using wifi to the sky router.

Had a problem with the BT open reach install (migrated from Virgin media and kept same number). Originally Sky arranged an open reach appointment but then said they could activate the line remotely. It turned out that there was a problem with the BT master socket that required an engineer install so mother was without a phone for about a day since they could not fix until the next day.

It's been AT LOT longer than this

Virgin have a policy of advertising and taking payment for a service advertised at much higher speed and quality than they actually provide. They continue to get away with it, so I can not see it changing

​if they don't meet with the terms you signed for ask them to cancel or give migration code. I was with them for 4 months of hell, at the end I had to go through ombudsman service and got out bt.

Forget about those estimated speeds, you can always get more or less than that. Mine says now that my estimated speed is 6 Mb/s but I am getting around 12 which is more than double, so ignore that estimate

If you go for the Sky fibre option then they'll use VirginMedia's fibre network to supply the broadband connection. :-)

I was a loyal customer with VM for nearly 16 years (well Telewest for most of that before the merger and the brand name change), but they don't reward loyalty very well. Providers always give new customers great deals. Decided to be a new customer every 12 months from now on and just jump back and forth. :smile:

Through Currys just signed a deal last week with Sky/TalkTalk that's half what I was paying with VM. :-)

I've been with virgin for over 2 years. Only because I don't have a fixed line and don't need it. However, I've had many problems with internet connection. had at least 2 engineers visits. one connected a small thing at the end of the cable to make the internet work properly. only for the other to remove it and replace the router a few weeks after. sometimes the connection was not good enough to even use voip ... had to keep calling them and they were making some adjustments which seemed to work for some time. every time I spent at least 30min. on the phone.. was a few hrs in 3 months, so they gave me some discount for the lost time, but just a few pounds (a joke).
today i spent just over 1hr trying to cancel the service. first call was disconnected after 25min. on the line, before I managed to speak with someone. second call was connected pretty quickly, but they then transferred me to the retention team and 20min.waiting.. they tried to convince me to stay by offering to postpone for 6 months the £2.99 price increase, saying that I need quicker connection. They added, that being 1km away from telephone exchange, I would not have quick connection (i'm not streaming, so don't really need so quick broadand anyway....

Area by area I'm sure it's different, but in my area Virgin suck (terrible terrible traffic shaping, no YouTube in the evenings etc). BT have never managed to successfully carry through with an order.

Sky are the only provider that actually do what they say on the tin. On top of this I rate their Wireless hardware above the competition.

This is a good deal if you aren't after fibre.

Great deal - shame I'm an existing customer. It's showing as £63 on TCB though rather than £72 unless I'm missing something? Can someone else check their TCB?

Going to use this info to haggle with Sky. Has anyone here who is an existing customer had any luck with getting them to match this including the Mastercard and an amount equal to the TCB too? Ta!

How that horse***t made it to top comment I will never know. Had sky broadband for 18 months now, 12 months of that time I paid the tidy sum of £10.00 on a deal. I can count the number of times I have lost connection on one hand.

It seems not to be a problem to go from BT to virgin. However I've been with cable for some time and
have a cable prefix number (0161 280 xxxx) and this transfer cannot be ported from Virgin to SKY, so I would have to have a new phone number.

Similar story to you - Virgin were great for a while, then once they started upgrading to DOCSIS3 it all started going wrong. Evening latency is getting beyond silly, I've had evenings with less than dialup speeds, daily or more frequent occurrences of total connectivity loss, etc. I've had three engineers out so far to adjust the signal, replace some cables, eventually one said that there's a contention issue (duh..) and it would take at least a few months to fix it. I have my doubts..

To top it all off they're increasing their charges, so bye bye VM and hello FTTC - the cabinet is literally around the corner, so hopefully it'll all be fine. Going with a NowTV bundle (to keep this post on topic) as it's the cheapest way to get a new line installed with no contract term, then I'll see what ISP works out best.

Totally agree about the loyalty. New customers better rewarded, but you can get a good deal if you threaten to leave and you get a decent member of the retentions team. We are on 200mbit for £25 a month. It's not even worth that though as it never works here. Will be cancelling when the contract is up and ordering a second FTTC line.

As an existing Sky customer I just renewed free broadband for a year and line rental reduced to £10/month, which saves £88.80, nearly as good as the £100 gift card. No cashback though, obviously.

As a current sky tv subscriber how can they say anytime extra is free for 12 months yet charge £10 a month not £5 a month without it ???? to me it's not free they charge you £60 more over a year

£5 for 12 months (^ then £10 a month) + Sky Line Rental (£17.40 a month)

Or £10 a month + add Sky Talk Anytime Extra free for 12 months a month (then £8 a month) + Sky Line Rental (£17.40 a month)

This deal is for unlimited ADSL. Fibre is also free but limited (to a really useful) 25GB per month. It's £10 a month for unlimited fibre.

To balance it out I'm impressed with my Bt package. 52mb, free Bt sport and the youview box has a good remote and guide. consistent 6.5MB/s download which beats Virgin who throttled me from 4MB to 1MB/s at peak times.

No problems so far but it's only week one.

I am currently on Sky Unlimited and it's fine most of the time (get 16mb down and 1mb up), just note that their DNS servers are notoriously bad and my connection would become so slow sometimes that I couldn't even load a speed test. The worst thing is Sky currently don't let you change the DNS addresses on your router so you have to manually change them on every device.

Nice, but hyperoptic is only available in multiple occupancy buildings (e.g. blocks of flats) and mostly only in London and only in the city and a few lucky town centres. I have a flat in Wimbledon and hyperoptic is not an option for me.
The main problem is the government doesn't want to invest and thinks the ISPs should foot the bill for FTTP which is incredibly expensive. I negotiate leased line contracts at work, you're talking thousands for installations unless you happen to have a POP right on your doorstep or in your building so there is no way the ISPs are gonna absorb that cost and not pass it on.

At some point 5G networks will overcome the need for fibre links, then the mobile networks will get congested and we will be back to square one again.

Also, those prehistoric lines can do over a gigabit (google "G.Fast") or vectoring. But again, who's going to absorb the cost :disappointed:

You should see internet connections in Romania. Makes UK (and even Sweden/Netherlands) look pathetic, including hyperoptic.

I've been with SKY for over 8 years and every year I get awesome deals (mostly 60%/75% off whole package).

Weather your a new customer or existing it's all about haggle haggle haggle until they fold.

Eventually my account got passed to the "executive office" (whatever that is) and was told my account was case managed so what did I do?

Got a NOW TV box and started to apply online offers exclusively to my NOW TV box (currently got free movies and sports for a month and am 1.39 better off going through TCB)

SKY will Never get one on me! as hard as they try

Yeah well, they started with zero regulations, plain UTP slung between buildings and alongside any other cables, power supplied often along the same cables, DIY WiFi links, etc... It all comes down to the age of the infrastructure and the development regulations - there was nothing in place and no or very little in terms of regulations, so it was much cheaper and easier to build it up. It's pretty much the opposite in the UK...

You're quite right hyperoptic right now it's only available in London and I guess its because it's only financially viable for them to deliver where there is high population density. The great thing about these start up companies is that creates little shockwaves in the market, which wakes people up (like me) to realise that the current monopoly BT have, and the way the non-fibre/optical broadband market operates in the UK is a joke.

I don't know much about FTTP POP etc and other things you've mentioned. But I do know having worked in eastern Europe that the UK is 10 years behind.

If the government doesn't want to subsidise the cost of delivering modern broadband solutions to us, I can only hope that the startups can make a dent in the market place, and finally bury the BT copper wire cartel that has been around for a decade to long. They are like a bad smell now and need to be removed from the country.

I've just switched from Virgin Cable 100 mbps to Sky ADSL and getting 10 mbps. I can't tell the difference! I moved from Virgin because in Hertfordshire they have had serious issues with disconnected service due to an infrastructure upgrade which will last till early next year. They made a concession and reduced my bill by £10 a month which anyone can qualify if they are having cut offs.I got fed up with being disconnected randomly and moved to Sky with a similar offer to this OP's last month. The Q Router is very good.I think speed is overrated, ping time with Sky is quicker.If I was a gamer I would possibly notice and I concede downloads slower etc at 1 mbps instead of Virgins 5 mbps.

That £9.95 delivery charge is quite sneaky as they don't tend to mention it I find when you order over the phone.

The £20 connection charge is questionable to be honest if an engineer visit isn't needed.

It's not Sky's fault, ultimately they lease these copper-turd wires from BT which are limited in many ways.

BT are old fashioned shysters and I don't understand why they are still even around. Hopefully in 10 years they will be a part of history that we should have changed.

My old dears in Ireland pay (or should I say I pay) €36 a month for unlimited 360mbps cable broadband. Makes my 38mbps Sky fibre look naff. UK is behind the times, internet wise. Even sleepy old Waterford is 10 times faster than our standard fibre in the UK, and 100 times faster than our standard broadband.

The UK is a global disgrace when it comes to broadband technology. We are behind most developed countries in the world, and some underdeveloped (i.e. Romania as mentioned).

We are riding on the coattails of being a global empire and colonising the weaker people in the world. It's ironic that the less educated and elderly in this county have voted to leave the group that rescued us from being what we are - a tiny island in the world with poorly educated people with nothing to offer the world.

If you believe otherwise, you've not traveled enough.

Depends where you live. Use to live in town centre sky never dropped. Although I moved got virgin 150mbps fibre connection constantly dropping on the phone with them every week. Ordered sky again mse deal

You can pay £20 for a Sky Q router if you wish ... decent price for a decent upgrade.

Otherwise, you'll get the standard Sky Hub which isn't that bad I found.

The delivery charge must go towards the router cost. No business pays £9.95 to deliver a parcel. The £20 charge is to switch your line over at the exchange not for a home visit.

I spoke to sky and they said make your application, then reschedule your required date as later dates become available. And yes the mastercard offer will apply. I'm also wanting mid November.

My own experience with Sky recently:
I chatted to a Sky expert through their online chat service. I asked that if I can choose an activation date because my current contract hasn't ended. They said Yes. "After you order approved, you can call us to change the date." So I ordered it. However, when I called them to change my activation date to a date next month, they said that they can't do so as the activation date has been arranged (normally within 14 days from your order). They only can cancel my order. So I cancelled my order.

Connected on the 27th got less 5 MB broadband speed, yes sky customer chat is slow on their website. Got to speak with an advisor and she she did sent in openreach the next day, speed went up to 9 mb and i was happy with it but speed has dropped to 5 mb now. It is disappointing with these slow speeds.
Left virgin the cable broadband was second to none always got 50mb straight. However they promised to up, with a hype letters texts email it to 75mb but nothing happened. I renewed my contract with them they gave a discount. A couple on months went by and the price went up and another few months went by and the price again went up. I called customer service and we then agreed a price again but by then i was very put off with their customer service Well before the contract expired i called them to cancel my contract, the next thing i saw that the discounts that tbey had given they rolled it back and doubled my bill. Virgin Media are daylight robbers their customer service sucks to the core.

Yes you lose £100 prepaid card but get sky anytime extra free normally £8pm so saving £96 over 12 months, skimmed details it includes 01,02,03 & UK mobiles, but please double check incase I'm mistaken

Wouldn't that require you deactivating the landline in your name, and your wife activating the line in her name? This may have a period with no landline during the switch?

I was considering this option, because, I have SKY TV and they would consider me as "existing customer" for broadband!!

waited for so long to chat to someone online, it did not happen so i called instead. they were capping it 5mb and now they are capping it at 8.5 MB. i am sure they give me more, i had 9 MB straight. so now have 8.l5 MB download which is capped.

Anyone know the exact process of cancelling and then signing up as a new customer in the name of wife/husband?

When you cancel, you need to give 31 days notice for TV an 14 days for landline/broadband...

How do I ensure minimal interruption and when can we sign up as a new customer?

I would strongly suggest you don't get ORIGIN. I unfortunately signed up for them and have had NO INTERNET OR PHONE SERVICE SINCE 20 SEPTEMBER.

While some of this is the fault of openreach origin have, and continue to, be aweful. For instance they sent me a router which isnt even configured, doesn't appear to even work and are massively dragging there feet to send me a new one (5 days of me telling them it doesn't work 5 days of them saying 'it just needs to sync'). They blamed my 'internal extensions' for the phone line bing dead as 'the line test passed', openreach engineer was eventually sent out after 9 days of arguing and was 100% there fault.

I could go on but please please please don't go with origin, if you have any issue you will discover they are aweful.
