I've tried to use the FIRST / CELEBRATE code at the end during check-out, however groupon says "Sorry, the code can't apply to this purchase. Check the code's rules." Any ideas?? :disappointed: (p.s I am a first time buyer on groupon/ new account)

Backblaze hard drive reliability for Q1 2016

Seagate had a big issue a couple of years back with their 3tb model; but they are not as awful as everyone likes to make out. the numbers speak for themselves; as of 2016 they are looking to be more reliable than WD on their 4TB and above range.

I have got a Seagate 1TB external that I have had for roughly 5 years and it is still running well, no strange sounds, and reliable backups to it every month. Last year I purchased a 3TB WD external drive and last week it failed (fortunately it only hosted backups of files I have on the PC)

Do you see what I am trying to say here?

All the stats in the world do not mean one drive will last longer than the other - and the sooner people work that one out and always have backups the better. Every thing I have that I care about is backed up to at least one other place, and my docs and photos are backed-up to two places in the cloud also
imagineS
28 Sep 16 #48
For the past 20 odd years I have had more Seagate drives fail on me than any other brand. Recently got a Seagate 2TB external and this thing was faulty. Family videos will stop during playback, transferring files and all of sudden LED light is solid rather blinking and stopped file transfer. Drive made a strange sort of clicking noise too.

Never again will I purchase a Segate drive. Heck even a WD re-certified will last longer LOL
I rather pay slightly more and get either;
WD or HGST drives. Far superior.

I have used seagates for over 30 years and they are a good brand with low failure rates. They are all basically made in the same ol factories these days and its hardly a risk now is it. 80 quid for all that storage

Anyone know if these would be soldered in? Or could I break one open for some extra storage in my desktop? Bought a 2tb 850 evo but decided that a hard drive worth about 50% of my PC cost was just a terrible idea haha.
bma1445
27 Sep 16 #29
It wasn't all seagate drives that were unreliable, it was just the 3TB ST3000DM. I should know, I had 5 die on me over a 3 year period.
BigYoSpeck to bma1445
27 Sep 16 1 #30
Yeah, that one specific model had a horrible failure rate pointing towards a fundamental design or build flaw. But typically other drivers from other manufacturers are all around the 5% failure rate mark.

Anecdotal cases of a single person saying they have multiple drive failures tell nothing of the scenario. We have no idea if there are user error factors involved.

SolidWarrior
27 Sep 16 #13
Can I take this out and use in PS4?
X50pence777 to SolidWarrior
27 Sep 16 #15
without an ugly adapter I highly doubt it, 4tb is not available in the 2.5" format that the ps4 uses, meaning this is a 3.5" desktop drive, also some drives have the usb soldered to the drive so it cannot be used as a normal drive... i have no idea if this one does this or not....
HecFam to SolidWarrior
27 Sep 16 #21
I managed to fit a drive similar to this from a Seagate STEA4000400.

The 2.5" drive is 14mm tall, so a lot taller than the 7mm drive the ps4 regularly uses.

I did have to remove the hard drive caddy from the PS and fit the drive in directly with a small bit of soft plastic to support it underneath ( as the sata port is a few mm off the tray bed), i did also have to loosen a few frame screws on the left hand side so that the drive wasn't squashed and wouldn't make the metal frame noisy from the vibration.

Doing this stops the top left panel from fitting on flush too.

So overall, will it fit, yes just about. Will it look the same, not quite. Well worth it for me to have a 4TB drive in the playstation though.
reddragon105
27 Sep 16 3 #18
4tb 2.5" drives were introduced in June 2015, so they do exist, and this is clearly 2.5" going by the look/size of the case and the fact that it's described as 'portable' (meaning USB powered) rather than 'external' (which would be a 3.5" drive requiring mains power).

Going by the dimensions, and from a quick Google search, I believe the hard drive in this is 15mm thick, which would be too big for the PS4's drive bay, which I think is 9.5mm.

Buy any hard drive at your own risk - they all have failure rates. You could buy a drive with a 10% failure rate and be in the other 90%, or buy a drive with a 1% failure rate and be in that 1%. The important thing is not to get the drive with the lowest failure rate but rather to make sure that any data you care about is backed up on at least one other drive or cloud storage.

Its all good and well saying Seagate aren't very good, and I don't doubt that if Groupon have a deal on them, but any suggestions on a decent priced more reliable alternative? I'm in the market for either 1tb or 2tb.
rastbury
27 Sep 16 3 #16
This is not a 3.5" desktop drive. It's a portable 2.5" one
jamesk191
27 Sep 16 1 #14
Backblaze stats hold no weight in my opinion. They have no control group, they dont have the same number of drives of all brands, their hard drives are externals that have been shucked and used in their storage pods, which the drives are not designed for. I don't agree that Seagate are "awful" but buyers should do their own research instead of being misinformed by dodgy stats.
