dimbo question maybe: but how does password protection work on a usb stick? (none of my other sticks needs a password or maybe I was just unaware)

Good question.

There's usually some software on the drive included that allows you to either place a container partition, which you can encrypt, or you can encrypt the entire stick.
It works well on these sticks.

The password encryption on these sticks came with a little SanDisk utility if I remember, it was not the best. Ended up just using the Windows BitLocker system, which encrypts the whole flash drive and will make you input the password for the USB before you can read or write to the contents. It can of course be formatted without password input, but atleast your data was encrypted and therefore irretrievable.
These drive USB ends get really really hot, like scorch your skin sort of hot during heavy transfers. So be warned if your drive is like this, it is normal and not a fault. Same price from Amazon (has been for a while) so if that works better for you.

Not surprising that these are cheap as they are some of the slowest drives on the market !
"As a consequence the 32GB Ultra is amongst the bottom 5% of 32GB Flash Drives in terms of performance and only slightly better in terms of value for money."
Very poor average bench
The SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB averaged 72.8% lower than the peak scores attained by the group leaders. This isn't a great result which indicates that there are much faster alternatives on the comparison list.
Might be better to pass on this one and spend it something with much better performance,.

you are no doubt correct - but does that matter much to (say) 50% of us or more?

I bought the 32gb from Amazon on Saturday. Slightly cheaper using prime but only by 4p. I also have the Ultra USB 3 Dual with standard type A and type B. Don't wast your money on the Dual, it's rubbish in comparison with the model posted. I rarely get usb 2 speed with it and will be returning it to Argos when I find the receipt. Not sure if it's faulty but it rarely connects now to my usb port and after checking the port with another flash drive it's fine so obviously the stick is faulty.
