don't get too excited. I have the SM951 which quotes up to 2000MB/s but has achieved nothing over 700MB/s in Win 7/10 Pro x64

Hi OP and other forum users,
Quick question, I am not familiar with M2 SSDs, if I get this, will I be able to upgrade my HP 250 G4, which came with an i5-6200U Processor and a 128GB (SAMSUNG MZNLF128HCHP-000H1) SSD?
I have been looking for more details of the innards of the HP 250 G4, but can't seem to find much information online.
why does the novatech quote lower read/write speeds, are they def the same product?

Hi drasim,
I have come across it before, but I assumed, as it was for the older generation HP 250 G4 (5th Generation Intel Core processors), the current service manual would be different, as mine is the 6th Generation! Also I am confused as the 128GB SSD installed in it is a M2 SSD! So are you helpfully trying to point out that there is a spare slot, for a SATA drive as well, in my HP 250 G4?
Many thanks for your assistance

HP associate the 6th gen model number with that service manual, but if you say otherwise, that's a bit lax from HP!

Preview / Mini-review of the 512GB version of this drive:
Basically m.2 can use two types of controller which essentially defines the speed you can reach. Sata which means you will only get the same speeds as a standard ssd or pci express which is faster the sata 3 and then there is nvme which is the quickest.

Still better to go for the 950 pro from all previews and reviews
Remember oem skus like the pm and sm961 have no warranty! 950 pro is much faster and has 5 years!

960 is due out in 1-/2 months .. This still looks good for the price. This isnt supported by the software bundle or Rapid mode (from reading on web).

Based on the sm961 numbers I'm a little worried about the 960 pro. It underperformed the 950 in almost every benchmark in the reviews I've read

You can get the 512gb for as cheap as 187--I know because I did back in March!

Do you just need a spare PCI-E to be able to use this?
Can it be used as a boot drive?

No, you will need a free M.2 slot on your motherboard.
It can be used as a boot device, yes.

This looks suspiciously like it would work in a MacBook Pro early 2015 (m2 pcie x4) can anyone confirm?
Its NMVe (as in NVM Express) not nvme. (and when people correct me like this, I'm thinking, Well bl**dy pay me then, if you want accurate journalistic type technical infomation, you cheapskates).

Yes, you would need something like that to use this drive with a PCI-E slot.

Apart from some issues with Windows 10 drivers, the SM961 smashes the 950 Pro in the reviews I've read, e.g. Tweaktown. I would have bought one if it hadn't been twice the price of the PM961, and I doubt I would see any difference in real usage tbh.

I'd still wait for the 960 Pro, and for actual reviews. I wouldn't want to be without warranty on such a new, high performance, and expensive item.

Different sites seem to list slightly different read/write speeds for this drive. I think it's because it's new and there isn't much official information from Samsung about it yet. The figures are all in the same ballpark though.

Do you mean when copying files etc? The SM951 does 1500MB/s+ in ATTO/AS-SSD benchmarks from what I've seen.
