What does this do that the cheap generic VR headsets don't? Just noticed they don't list the S7 as a compatible model I presume there's a newer version that is.

There is a newer, black version with a slightly higher FOV angle, and USB-c for the note 7 (plus a USB-c to micro USB adapter for S6/S7 range phones.
This is still decent. The difference between this and a cheap(er) plastic pair is a) the oculus storefront b) integrated head tracking sensors that are much better than the ones in your phone and touchpad. Basically, this one won't give you AS MUCH motion sickness (except in some of the more terrible games on oculus that have you tilting your head in various directions while the image shifts in the opposite direction)

The GearVR has the same IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) as the Rift, which is accurate and sampled at a much higher rate than the one in a phone. The higher sample rate allows them to have more numbers to work with for a given time step in order to throw out and/or smooth out noisy values. I believe there is a compass in there as well to help with drift correction.
I use my S7 Edge with my GearVR and the experience can be surprisingly good. There's a cardboard enabler app for the GearVR so it's possible to compare. I've played around with some of the Carboard apps but get end up with nausea pretty quickly.
If you have a compatible Samsung Headset, a GearVR is a no-brainer. It's a great entry to VR.
I wouldn't want to buy a user headset though. Anyone's sweat, moisturiser or makeup could be in the foam cushioning.

You can get all the compatible apps and experiences at the Oculus store https://www.oculus.com/experiences/gear-vr/ I was able to get 6 free games when I first signed up. Pretty decent ones. There are frequently game sales and a bunch of video apps with loads of 360 content.
There's Minecraft VR and loads of space shooters and house of horror type games.

Is Galaxy Note Edge compatible?
sancheez
19 Sep 16#26
Yeah. I've got a bobovr 4 as well. It's not bad as far as generic phone holder VR stuff goes.
Although, I dunno where their FOV claims come from. They claim 120 degrees. The Vive is aroun 100/110 degrees. I have the bobovr and a Vive. It's not even a contest. The Vive FOV seems far better to me. With the bobovr I can pretty much see I'm looking at a box, that seldom happens with the Vive.
But anyway, a lot of whether it'll be any good is down to your phone. The faster the phone, the better it'll cope with VR style apps. On the rare occasion I use the bobovr, it's with a Nexus 6p and that copes OK.

No the description is correct,it is compatible with the S7,I know this as these were given away free (when pre ordering) when with the S7 when it was first released.
Also the screen size of the S7 has nothing to do with it as these take galaxy S6 edge plus which is a 5.7 inch screen, where as the S7 is only 5.5 inch.
Further more I have personally used both the S7 (5.5 inch screen) and a S6 edge plus (5.7 inch screen) in this gear VR headset without any issues.

Honestly I would just spend a few quid on a generic cardboard VR (I got the BlueCookies one from amazon which was fine, but there's plenty to choose from). It gives you most of the experience without significant outlay. Also a lot of the plastic ones have the phone too far from your face so you get a super low FOV.
Btw you can download the VR apps and try them, just to check your phone has the sensors required.

19 Sep 16#57
what do you mean? a normal video you took with your camera can be displayed, but it will be shown on a virtual screen( basically just a floating square), to have an actual vr experience you either need a 360 video or a 3d sbs(side by side) video.
in terms of quality any resoltion video can be shown but the worse the resolution the more blury it becomes..and its very notisable... so high resolution is advised

Sisters is an example of the immersion, the graphics are hopeless in Sisters but it doesn't matter because your brain still gets the effect. If you want another level of being scared then try and play the game Dreadhalls.
I recommend:
Sisters
Tactera Demo (amazing game)
Smash Hit (also amazing game)
There's also plenty of videos that are decent to demonstrate the immersion, Jurassic Park for example.
If you want a gamepad that works on the S6 then the GameSir G3S does which is usually sold on Amazon. They must make an updated pad that works with the S7 now but I don't know the model.
Playing a game such as Herobound has to be experienced with the gamepad to be believed, I haven't tried any Elite style space games yet, I'm pretty resilient to the VR motion sickness experience but I think they might have me puking.
