Yes, NOW TV is very limited on apps. You can add apps like FilmON on Roku if you search online for the code. NOW TV will only let you sideload one extra Roku app at a time.
EDIT: links aren't working properly; just search for 3500EU @Argos

Does Roku have Amazon Prime Video? What other notable apps are there besides Netflix when compared to NowTV?
(This is for my parents - so Kodi/Plex etc aren't of interest)

I was just googling... The answer is no! It's listed as "compatible but slow" with plex...
The new 2016 model is the 3600
Edit: Looks like the newer better model is North America only... so for EU this is the most up to date model :/
Shame they didn't put a headphone jack in the remote like they've done with the more expensive boxes to allow pass through audio. That is an amazing feature.
Regardless, great price, would go for one if I didn't already have a chrome cast.
That's no issue for me. My parents always hit the stupid NowTV device limit - even though they are using the same 4 devices to access NowTV. So I'll be happy to help them move over to NowTV + Amazon Video/Netflix and then just use the NowTV box as a freeview catchup service.

I have had one of these for a few months, previously had an earlier Roku box, this device is tiny, has a higher resolution interface (shows more on the screen), and just works really really well. I can even control it from my phone. Works well with both Netflix and Amazon video. It has other app/uses too, but that's all I use it for. I had some issues getting HD streaming initially but tweaked some settings on my router and now it's fine.

hukdaardcdu
10 Sep 16#76
AFAIA, you can have a device with the iPlayer app, as long as you don't use iPlayr for watching live TV. It;s perfectly legal to use the iPlayer app to listen to radio for example. Possession of the app doesn't need a licence - you have to be using it to watch live or catch-up BBC TV. You can legally use Netflix for that.

Let's not forget, new Now TV box is ethernet not wifi.
I currently have the latest now tv box, Itt can pause, rewind and fast forward the live entertainment channels. Can the roku stick do that? Am I missing something?

I've had mine two years now. Got used to its sluggish performance and regular rebooting when I happen to put it under pressure by fast forwarding or rewinding anything I'm streaming. Only put up with it this long because of the range of apps such as Amazon and now tv and iPlayer that work with and the fact that I've been holding off replacing it for the past year waiting for the newer model (3600) or the 4K new box to reach these shores.

hukdaardcdu
10 Sep 16#93
I know the law has changed. You need a licence to WATCH TV using iPlayer. You do NOT need a TV licence to have a machine with iPlayer capability as long as you don't use iPlayer to watch TV.
fuzzy_logic
10 Sep 16#94
OK, i'm talking about the availability of legit apps from the Roku store, that don't require any hacks/sideloading. Chromecast requires casting from apps phone/tablet. Most people would prefer a simple remote and the apps to be on the device. I'm pretty sure you can't use Amazon Video on Chromecast without doing it from a Chrome browser - seems pretty awkward to me.

Hi, can anyone answer my question above, can live entertainment channels from Now TV be paused, rewind etc on the Roku stick? I can see a benefit in having a single stick that does everything, but if it can't pause live tv, then it can't do everything! In that case I'm best sticking with my Now TV Smart box and fire tv stick. If it can pause live tv, then I might try it.
Using Now TV and my fire-tv stick, I can do all this, except for Google Play Movies, which I'm not interested in. It would be nice to have everything on a single stick, but see above ...

The truth is, we've hit a point where the old arguments about lack of access to content etc don't wash now. (Certainly regarding mainstream audiences). It looks like they are giving you access to a server they set up without giving you the direct login details so they don't have to set up a lot of dummy accounts to sell to a lot of people. Basically, unless I am mistaken it will use more or less the same sources as the common Kodi addons and therefore is only as legal as doing the same with Kodi.

There's actually a whole heap of free catchup apps beyond the usual iplayer etc. I wouldn't expect to find much quality content - but there are plenty offering free movies and old TV series.
With that said, do yourself a favour and pony up for the £6 per month Netflix deal. There is SO MUCH good content on there. Just watched 'Stranger Things' - which was superb. One of the best things I've seen in ages! Now looking forward to the second series of Narcos (Pablo Escobar).

It also has a filmon app with a tonne of channels....not all are great but a small selection of pay tv. You need to add this hidden channel via the website though using the channel code. And there are loads of others....one channel had just had access to all 7 star wars movies for example, another all star trek movies....again you needed to add the hidden code as the main one from the roku store reverted to just showing trailers.
And you can make your own apps using the roku app makers and then embed your own streams picked up from interent sources if you really want to do kodi equivalent stuff on top of everything else other people are doing. you just have to look....

I would say its probably a similar service if your paying a sub the only difference maybe is just how simple it is to set up. There is never any need to update anything as thats done for you. Its purely a case of turning now tv on select plex and your good to go and the selection of channels,on demand films,tv shows, music, and just about anything you could ever want is there. I would definitely try a 24hr test and see how it compares with your service ive tried many streaming devices and for me this is the winner. now tv boxes cost next to nothing as well plenty of people sell them on here

.....but it can still be a very useful tool If you have lots of media stored already. Create Plex library folders pointing to your TV Shows/Movies etc..(I create even more granular folders for everyone in the home, e.g my TV shows, My Movies etc..) Then create a port forward on your router to your Plex server and everyone in the house can then access their own personal media library on whatever device wherever they are....Phones/Tablets/Browser...
Turns your home media library into a Netflix type library...and there are Plex clients for so many devices...

EDIT: links aren't working properly; just search for 3500EU @Argos
(This is for my parents - so Kodi/Plex etc aren't of interest)
*Edit - yes it does. Reserved for collection . Netflix + Amazon Prime Video is so much better than NowTV's offering. Works out about the same price too...with all the other Prime delivery/music perks.
The new 2016 model is the 3600
Edit: Looks like the newer better model is North America only... so for EU this is the most up to date model :/
Regardless, great price, would go for one if I didn't already have a chrome cast.
Found it (ESP Netflix) very slow.

Popped into one local to me and had 1 in stock , result
Worth going to store and checking stock
The Now TV box does not have Netflix nor Amazon Prime Video.
although I would recommend an Android box over Now TV and Roku.
EDIT looks like it's up to 1080p with a 600MHz cpu and 512MB RAM which would account for the sluggishness. I think the Now tv box 2 has a 900MHz cpu and the same ram so I might as well keep my now tv box.
is it worth buying this if you don't have any paid subscription ?
If you subscribe to a mix of Now Tv, Amazon, Netflix or buy films/shows from Amazon or Google Play, then these devices are fantastic. (In my case I have a Roku 3, not the slightly underpowered stick.)
Just adding a few extra free channels not in the menu at the mo
I used PayPal
It's just incase you want to pay for anything
Do I need a TV licence to watch iPlayer?
Ignore this comment , still available

I put in a few random areas to check and showed stock still
Using Now TV and my fire-tv stick, I can do all this, except for Google Play Movies, which I'm not interested in. It would be nice to have everything on a single stick, but see above ...

Also, is the All4 app still broken on the PlayStation?! Works perfectly on the Roku.
Let the masses carry on with the crappy KODI plugins while we enjoy Plex and IPTV
With that said, do yourself a favour and pony up for the £6 per month Netflix deal. There is SO MUCH good content on there. Just watched 'Stranger Things' - which was superb. One of the best things I've seen in ages! Now looking forward to the second series of Narcos (Pablo Escobar).
And you can make your own apps using the roku app makers and then embed your own streams picked up from interent sources if you really want to do kodi equivalent stuff on top of everything else other people are doing. you just have to look....
Not trying to be argumentative, just curious. I already use a paid service in Kodi that works awesome.
I was using Kodi way before it was called kodi even before it was called xbmc..... On an original xbox
Read my post, just above yours. We've moved past that now dude.
I guess if you're willing to pay then Kodi/Plex is much of a muchness.
I run Kodi on a htpc in the front room and on my gaming pc in my office and have it on an android box in the bedroom.
I've put plex media server on my server this evening, will take a look. I did try it a few years ago and wasn't impressed but bought a new TV a few weeks back that has a plex client, so willing to take another look.
