Handy little item, tests an RJ45 cable for any problems.
For use with RJ45 (8P8C) & RJ11 (6P6C) Cables
Easy to read LED Display
Supplied with remote unit for testing installed wall ports
Maximum test length: 1000 ft (305m)
Had one as a end to end tester, broke very quickly, should do well as a diy tester, just don't expect it to last for over a year or two.

We've been using this at work place for years. Never let us down. Reliable product and well worth £2

So can you this to trace ports from wall to patch panel?

It's for testing cables (making sure that every pin is connected). I guess you could use it to figure out what goes where, but you'd need to connect it to each port one by one which would be a pretty damn tedious way of doing it!
If you want to properly trace cables you'll need to be prepared to pay a bit more than £2 I'm afraid!

Yeah we used to use these all the time for tracing cables as well as testing each internal wire however as someone said, a tone tester or similar is better as you can send a pulse down one end and go to what you suspect to be the other end and see if it's flashing
Perfectly functional providing you are aware of its intended use and limitations. nice price.

I have one. Bought it years ago, for about £9. Really useful. Sure - a bit cheap and tacky, but works fine. Recommended.

Great price for a very useful device. Works fine if you're testing cables at home. Not very reliable on longer cables (100m+) though.

Cat 5 isn't supposed to work over a 100m.

I have one (or at least something similar), it's ok for casual testing straight through cables but for crossover I'd suggest getting something else as it can be annoying due to the LEDs being quite fast (at least for me).
Been using one of these for work for years now, simple tool for cable continuity testing. It's surprising how often network faults are caused by faulty patch cables.

They are only worth about £2, if you get one that even lasts long enough for the battery to run out, you've done well.
I did a huge cabling install last year and went through 3 of these on that one job alone. They are flimsy and break very easily, but they are cheap enough that I don't give a ****. I always carry a spare brand new one whenever I work!

I've had two of these and there OK for light use but don't travel well in a tool kit. Ended up buying a more expensive type as the pins inside bent.

My unit arrived today.
Even before i unsealed the plastic it came in ( which looked liked it have been resealed by one of those jml home plastic bag resealers), i could see dirt on the unit in multiple places.
Clearly not prisitne/factory fresh.
Did anybody else feel the unit they recieved was not factory fresh/sealed?
Really hate recieving previously unwanted returns or refurb units, advertised as new.
