I got the white/silver one last time this was on offer from here.I did not like Windows 10 so I reverted back to Windows 8.1.The 32Gb ssd is fairly full and quite slow,I upgraded to a 128Gb ssd and it is so much better.I used this one:Your text here.Any type 2242 M2 ssd should fit though.Open the case from the bottom edge then using a credit card to release the plastic catches that run round the outside. My unit was also brand new in the box and had no Windows updates installed so be prepared to wait quite a long time for all updates to download and install.

OttovonPrimark
12 Sep 16#51
Now I'm getting a little worried. This is what my dispatch note says (the tablet is due to arrive tomorrow):
From the get go every email from Maplins has said Android 4.2 Or Windows 8.1 with [32MB Win 8.1] in brackets. I've not had anything which definitely says it's a Win 8.1 device on its way. And my dispatch note came not from Maplins/Ebay but from [email protected]
BTW - as Nige182 said earlier the upgrade path from 8.1 to 10 is still open. You just need to google for details. It's all done through Microsoft and it does work. I did it last week with a Linx tablet - though the process was mind numbingly slow.

nige182
13 Sep 161#63
The card was underneath the card tray for the tablet, where the big book was in my box, it says:
"DO NOT DISCARD"
Microsoft Product Identifier
Included Microsoft Product:
Windows 8 Small Screen Touch with Office Home & Student 2013
Then has an authentication sticker underneath. The code on this sticker is both for Windows 8 and for Office Home & Student 2013. If you do not have this code, but are still running Windows 8, make sure you take down your Windows 8 product key and install Office 2013 first (it should have a shortcut I think to start installing), and make sure that activates fine. Then use a tool to make sure you have taken down any product codes in case it activates with a different key (I think it should activate the same as it is one key on my card for both products). Do all that before updating to Windows 10 to make sure you keep the Office 2013 license.

nige182
13 Sep 161#70
The screen brightness on these is very dull within Windows. I don't know why, it is fine on boot but once fully loaded into Windows it seems to be really dull, several people mentioned the same on the previous deal of this. I never saw a fix but can't see why it wouldn't be possible, there doesn't seem to be a hardware fault it seems specific to Windows.

13 Sep 161#71
There's a setting 'turn off automatic brightness' in settings, once off it's fine

Having real trouble upgrading to Win 10 using the only availlable free route. Empty and formatted USB and SD (attached via three port OTG) are not options during the initial system upgrade assessment and the tablet's 32GB HD has only 14/15GB free even after a reset to factory condition.

14 Sep 16#76
Several of us had problems, if I recall, I downloaded the offline installer for the upgrade to USB, then during setup it asked for a location to save the backup, I had to select the SD card for that and then it had enough space to do it.

nigelpwilson
14 Sep 16#81
I've just upgraded mine with Windows 10 and it still activated fine even though the free promotion is supposed to have finished. Did it using a USB stick
nige182
14 Sep 16#82
Not sure what you mean sorry, I did it before the official free upgrade ended though if that was what you were asking. I am not sure what the tool is that you can download now, but if it has an option for offline installation, or installation on another computer, that is the option I chose to start with. Then used that to create a USB stick with the install files. Once it has done that and performed the cleanup, run the upgrade program from USB, it says there is not enough space and somewhere there is an option to select another drive for the backup, which I chose the micro USB, then I think it worked. Took ages though so make sure it has a full charge.
OttovonPrimark
14 Sep 16#83
Yaaaay. Did it. Reset the tablet. No progs other than Virtual Clone Drive to install the ISO. Used the Media Creation Tool and Win 10 ISO from MS. No idea why USB/SD would not work.
Nohm
15 Sep 16#84
you done it without USB or SD card?
OttovonPrimark
15 Sep 16#85
Not entirely. It took a while to get the tablet to play nice. I spent about 15-16 hours on it yesterday and my options got fewer and fewer. I simply could not free up enough space on the tablet to go the adaptive technologies upgrade route - which is a Win 10 upgrade aimed at people with disabilities (though MS simply does not check). At no time did the 'not enough space' message come with an option to use off-device storage. I also could not do a fresh install by USB or SD. I was tearing my hair out.
Reset the tablet, again. Uninstalled every last program I could. I was down to just Epic Browser and Virtual Clone Drive (freeware) on the desktop. I used Media Creation Tool to put to Win 10 on a USB attached through a three-port OTG adapter. Rebooted. The .exe on the ISO showed up as a clickable option within VCD and it was just a case of clicking the .exe and crossing my fingers. I did not think it would work, but it did. Install took about 40 minutes. Update took longer. The microSD card slot wasn't recognised but I fixed that with nige's post containing the Realtek driver. Thanks for that - it's a real pain hunting down the right ones.
The effort is so worth it. Windows 10 looks and feels massively better than Win 8.1. Clearly either the ISO route is still free (but MS is keeping quiet about it) or Win 10 has been on my device before, registered with MS but removed during the refurb process. At no point was I ever asked for a product key.
Nohm
15 Sep 16#86
So it all worked with using a USB stick with just the 17mb MediaCreationTool.exe in it? Thought I'd have to download the ISO and make the USB a bootable ISO or something
Edit: Oh you created an ISO through the mediacreationtool and used the VCD app to make it a bootable disk (ISO)?
BTW where does the backup (rollback Windows 8.1) files store? in the USB?
Nohm
16 Sep 16#87
Just updated to Windows 10, my approach was a bit different, I put the mediacreationtool executable within the USB stick and installed the ISO on, after that I plugged it in the tablet, went to the USB dir and opened the setup.exe within the ISO and just installed Windows 10 from there without any third party ISO software. Even without the fancy OTG wire thus installed without charging as I started with 100% after an hour or so after when it finished it came to 66% battery.
All in all went good and got a bit scared when I first got into windows 10 and found it laggy, after a restart it just needed to install it's drivers.
BTW my windows.old folder was in C driver after.
Nohm to Nohm
16 Sep 16#88
just like to add I have finished updating and have not got any driver issues since the start
sunnygilluk
18 Sep 16#89
I just put an SD card in, downloaded the mediacreationtool onto the tablet, ran it, chose update this computer, and when it eventually said not enough space i clicked use external drive (The SD Card). I believe it just uses that to house the instalation / old windows files.
