lovely graphics card for a mid-budget build

Palit GeForce®GTX 1060 DUAL 3GB is build with "Dual Fan" and is loaded with innovative new gaming technologies, making it the perfect choice for the latest high-definition games. Powered by NVIDIA Pascal™—the most advanced GPU architecture ever created—the GeForce®GTX 1060 delivers brilliant performance that opens the door to virtual reality and beyond

Honeycomb Bracket

The design of honeycomb bracket increases airflow by up to 15%, allowing the heat generated from GPU to be exhausted via the honeycomb design bracket. This enables more efficient cooling effects.

Dual Fan

A Dual Fan design offers double the cooling performance, and combined with the 9CM-9CM Smart Fans, heat is effectively drawn away from hot spots.

4k3

With its HDMI and DisplayPort ports, the Palit provides a flawless, jaw dropping experience at Dual 4K monitors.

DrMOS

DrMOS, originally only available for high-end server CPUs, is now available in all its glory in the next generation of Palit graphics cards. DrMOS offers high current circuits, low noise operation, and effective reduction of heat generating.

ThunderMaster

ThunderMaster is a utility program for the graphics card under Windows, and provides you to boost performance of the graphics card and to monitor the GPU information, which will only function correctly in conjunction with your new graphics adapter.

There's no questioning the fact that games are getting larger and requiring more VRAM.

The 1060 is a 980 replacement. The normal 6GB 1060 does this well in terms of both horsepower and memory availability.
This gimped 3GB card should be bought by nobody. Nvidia need to get the message.

This has lower performance against the 970 on games like Hitman. Why? Because this has 3Gb VRAM while the 970 has (3.5+0.5) 4GB VRAM. I would advise against this for future proofing.

Who honestly buys a 179.99 GFX card to future proof?

That's such a garbage term when talking budget cards.

No card is future proof. Spend on a budget that suits you for games you want to play, consider replacing GFX cards on a rotation that suits your needs.

Offering advice on what *might* happen in the future is crazy and daft.

GTX1060 3GB versus 6GB version, this doesn't just have half the memory, it has fewer CUDA cores as well, so has less processing power than the 6GB version. Whether it's hot or cold is rather based on the price, but that difference is significant.

but for the price though? cheapest I can find rx480 is £204.98 from scan. £25 more? for 1gb of gddr5? is it worth it? I wouldn't really know but surely the palit could be oc'd so the memory and clockspeed could match it on performance?

I mean, at least you linked the article, but you say "hmm very interesting' as if you are trying to suggest there is a problem.

The 1060 is not the 980 replacement. It's the 970 replacement. It's ahead of the 970, by a hair.

There is no questioning the fact that right now, 1080p, 60fps on high/ultra is absolutely great for the 1060 3gb card.

If that is your budget and that is what you want, this card is the perfect fit.
Marekj
13 Sep 16 #19
1060 is a replacement for the 960, surely. The fact that it performs like a 970, whilst using much less power, is testament to the strides made with pascal. The 960 was about £230 for the 2gb version upon release.

As others have stated; I don't think you're buying a mainstream card to 'future proof' yourself. Perfectly reasonable to save yourself £50/£60 and play on ultra settings, as opposed to nightmare. . .

The 960 released at $199 US and £160 UK.

http://www.geforce.co.uk/whats-new/articles/introducing-the-geforce-gtx-960

I mean, you are literally off by £70 quid on your pricing

http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/geforce-gtx-970-980-sep-18-2014-uk.html

The Geforce 970 released at £259.99

I don't know how else I can say it, the 1060 6GB was released as a replacement for the 970 segment.

NVIDIA said this themselves.

The 1060 3gb is more around the 960 price point.

But I agree, it is absolutely reasonable to consider the 1060 3gb version to save yourself 50+ quid. The 3gb card is absolutely a good card and is well priced.

This is silly. By that logic, cards should perform similarly to 2+ years old gen cards because they have the same designation in the line-up. OF COURSE it's faster than the 960, it should blow that horrible card out the water as that is 2 years old, an older architecture and manufactured on 28nm process. The 1060 should be as fast as the 980.

No. The 1060 is the 960 replacement, but a combination of nvidia deciding to bump the price and a terrible exchange rate has pushed it up to 970 prices. It is currently overpriced for its place in the market.

Eh? Bumping the price of the... 1060? Its RRP is $250/$200 for the 6GB/3GB models, compared with $250/$200 on the 960 4GB/2GB, $300/$250 on the 760 4GB/2GB, and $300/$230 on the 660Ti/660...

It's a similar situation with the 1070 - it costs more than the 970, true, but compared with the 770, 670 and 570? The abnormally cheap 970 seems to have thrown everyone's pricing off. :/

We are going back a few years, but I recall getting a 1GB card to save a few quid. It played all the latest games at the level I wanted, I was happy...for a while. I regret that call very much now, as so many games needed more and more compromise to get playable frame rates. We all have a cut off point with cost, but the saving on this compared to the 6GB is false economy in the long run. Get the best you can afford.

for 1080 games it's alright really. I'm still using my MX 675m card (Overclocked) on my iMac... got doom running around 50-60fps on high. thinking about doing a budget build in 6 months or so, just nice to see what's out there for this kind of money. you can still have fun and see some great visuals with a low-mid ranger...

Just like the 8gb RX 480 was meant to come in at sub £200. .

I paid £225 for my 960 around launch. I know for sure, as it is still on my order records on Ebuyer. The 970 was over £300 for a few months after release.

Wasn't aware that Nvidia considered the 1060 to be a replacement for the 970, though. Seems a little odd given the naming.
Nate1492

No, it's a 1060.

It's clocking in 3-4% less than the 1060 6gb.

Virtually equal.
Nate1492
13 Sep 16 #43
Odd or not, they specifically talked about how each card matched up to the previous generation in terms of replacement strategy.

Not apples to apples, but what they considered each lineage.

It's pretty clear that a card released at 349.99 MSRP isn't a replacement for a card that was released at 259.99 MSRP.

BetaRomeo

Do you have a link to where "they" (presumably Nvidia?) specifically said that the 1060 replaces the 970 and the 1070 replaces the 980?

There are a couple of really, really obvious reasons why the £350 price for the 1070 is so much higher than the £260 970. Firstly, the 970 is by far the cheapest card in the xx70 line-up, which you'd know if you'd followed graphics cards for more than a couple of years. (We also know why it's so cheap!) For the 1060, this time the high-VRAM model launched first, while the 2GB 960 launched first last time, presenting an apparently much-cheaper Maxwell card at first glance.

Secondly... well, if you're still working your way through this year's news, I won't mention any spoilers, but for some reason the GBP has dropped nearly 20% this year. Funnily enough, £350 is nearly 20% more than £300. Coincidentally, the timing of the change in GBP value happened after the 1070 was unveiled, but before UK prices were announced - we were expecting an official price of £299.99, which fits what we've seen almost perfectly.

In the rest of the world, the line-up is mostly as it should be (although in Canada and Australia we were enjoying a much stronger $ when the 970 launched, so we do have a slightly similar situation!). The 1060 and 1070 are replacements for the 960 and 970, just as the 960 and 970 were replacements for the 760 and 770, and the 660 and 670 before them. (It's worth checking out those older launch prices if you're new to graphics cards and can't understand why the 1070 does cost more than the 970.)

Nvidia is not a British company (gasp) and the cards are not manufactured in Britain (shock, horror). Please don't apply UK pricing to reason out which cards replace which from a US company. We voted for these prices, and now we've got them.

This is only 3GB of memory people, that is woefully short these days for a card at this price. You'd be mad to buy this when there are 4GB cards (RX 480s) or even 8GB cards (cheaper 470s) that cost the same amount. DON'T BE FOOLED.
Nate1492 to Coulomb_Barrier
14 Sep 16 #52
Got a link to the 470s 8GB at this price? I think you'll find the 470 8GB is competing with the 1060 6GB.

And by the way, the 1060 6GB is a *way* better card than the 470 8GB.

I'd entertain a discussion between 470 4gb and 1060 3gb for specific situations, but for the most part, the 470 simply can't keep up with the 1060.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_Gaming_X_3_GB/26.html

470 is nearly 20% slower at the same price point. Really hard to justify.

Hi, I'm sorry, I guess you already provided a link to where Nvidia said the 1070 replaces the 980 and the 1060 replaces the 970, as requested before, but it doesn't appear to have shown up - perhaps the moderators didn't approve your comment? Would you mind trying again, please? Or at least describing the specific source, if the mods aren't allowing you to include the actual link?

You might want to check the link you just shared, as that doesn't have anything to do with Nvidia claiming the 1070 replaces the 980 or the 1060 replaces the 970.

If you mean the slide shows the replacement order... no, it really doesn't. It simply shows the line-up order of cards from Inno3D (as it's their slide, not Nvidia's). If you mean that the alignment is supposed to mean something... no, I won't finish that thought, as I don't want to imply you're that stupid.

I'm assuming you just copied/pasted the wrong link, as no-one with English as a first language would make such a silly mistake as to think that link was relevant, so would you mind sharing where Nvidia "specifically" (your word) said the 1070 replaces the 980 and the 1060 replaces the 970? Really, absolutely, genuinely curious, as it's so incredibly unbelievable! :man:
