People who like OS X but not the hassle of hackintosh? Although saying that, my laptop is an HP 4530s that I got after it was posted here on HUKD in early 2012 for, as I remember, around £200. She's been hackintoshed since day one and currently runs the latest OS X version, perfectly. She's has upgraded RAM and an SSD. Since I have an iPhone and so does the rest of the family, plus iPads, an iMac, a MacBook and Apple TV. So FaceTime and iMessage is perfectly integrated and works well for us as a family. Plus iCloud photo sharing.. Family Apple Music sub... Yes we're totally engulfed in the Apple ecosystem. I wish their hardware wasn't so expensive but we never pay full price. Usually we get refurb iPhones from O2 Refresh, the MacBook and iMac were both bought with student discount and 3 years AppleCare...plus two of the devices are actually hackintoshes, not real Apple products. So I think we're quite thrifty with how much of our money which actually give to Apple, despite us being "all Apple".

I know people talk about Apple sheep and baaaa and that but frankly I don't understand it. A sheep is what, one who just follows blindly the other without thinking? We don't do that. We carefully choose what we want, buy it when and how we want and, in most cases, refrain from buying the latest brand new devices unless the price is right and even then if it serves as a solution to a problem, otherwise we don't bother.

Oh mac OS for my desktop -I would buy for £400

it is software. as windows fanboy. I can only justify mac price as for optimisation, antivirus, fresh OS that keeps spinning on old devices. so people who spent £2000+ in 2012-13 made best investment as that machine was future proof. 2014 onward -junk full of limits. looking at bigger picture OS optimised as hell. my windows crushes and service pack released not fixes that just adds more instructions to slow system down. I have changed 3 laptops since 2012 and now looking to buy 2013 macbook pro to maximise potential and not be limited by current hardware futureproofness..

I agree, this is just one more way of closing off the upgrade path, and keeping the cash pile growing in house. Then again, they have to take the come back if something goes wrong, rather than having to chase a third party supplier.

Acquired a light usage 2012 quad core Mac Mini server recently, and that's still upgradeable over the 2014 models. Seems to run MacOS Sierra just fine. Even got an old G5 Mac Pro waiting to be tinkered with that I got for £10 on Facebook. Should do as a general server with some extra bits and an old version of OS X Server.

I sold my MacBook Air for a Surface Pro 3 earlier this year and it was a massive mistake. Baring in mind they are the same spec, the Surface is awfully underpowered in comparison, runs hot, makes a lot of noise and can barely run 2 programs at once... The battery lasts half the time. It is constantly updating, constantly freezing, programs shutting down etc.

Macs just work. OK, program compatibility can be a bit of hassle, but other than that it's great. Also, Android phones don't play well with them - for obvious reasons.

I've still got my macbook late 2008. Upgraded the RAM to 8gb, HD to 256gb SSD and it's still going strong.

I think the apple effect has impacted on Windows machines in that that have become far more stylish and sophisticated. Looks at the HP Spectre.

The one thing that would put me off buying another Mac is the lack of being able to upgrade RAM and HDD and even the battery in order to extend the life of the mac. It's just made so difficult now days but they are definitely a piece of design and beauty.

It still looks good but back then an 8 hour battery life was rare in a Windows laptop. Battery life also depends upon use. Apple stopped using dedicated IBM mutlti core chips years ago and now uses Intel, a chipiset designed for Windows machines and needs to be fitted to Windows designed hardware. I take your point about reliabilty and endurance but if I was to charge £1000 for an identically specced £500 Windows machine ie the SAME hardware I might want to spend a small amount more on more durable case components to perpetuate the myth that it really is worth twice the price.

Where did I say about reliability? Windows laptops are reliable. But does your laptop look great, lightweight and have an 8 hour battery life? Certainly not.

I too share your dilemma! I'm just wondering whether the upgrade would be significant enough to justify paying top $$$ when we can pick up 2015 machines at a good discount that, based on my experience of buying Macs, will still be good for 3 - 5 years of use?

I need mine as a workhorse (design) and to be fair will likely be running it on a monitor with a mouse (like a desktop but with portability so I can take it on the road) so not bothered about updates to the trackpad etc.

But I'm beginning to wonder whether it might be best to go for the outgoing machines. A side effect of Brexit was the change in the exchange rates. This has pushed up the price of iPhone 7 by £100 (for the non-sheep amongst us, Apple normally keep the price steady for their upgraded machines and drop the price of the outgoing ones... by a small amount, it has to be said).

Either way, I'm going to wait till next month. Then - decision time. New-fangled or outgoing?

I got a macbook after gcse's, took me through 2 years of a-levels, a gap year, 3 years of uni and now I've been graduated for 2 years. Yep, still going strong and I use it everyday. I had to upgrade the RAM a couple of years ago but cost £30. Sure the shell is beaten up, but the keys, screen and trackpad still work as if new. My sister got a Toshiba at the start of uni and by the end of the three years it had to have a replacement battery, new charger, new hinges... twice and had go into be fixed because it blue screened. Sure macbooks cost more than the average £350 you would spend on a low-mid range PC, but it'll last 3x+ longer. So really your money will go further in the long run.

Same price as the refurb store for this model. The 256gb model is cheaper on the refurb store at £1019 vs £1030 at Currys after code and cash back. In my experience the refurb store items are as new except for the packaging which is a blank box.

Of course "stay tuned" is Apple speak for "watch what the competition is doing, copy it, then have a massive press launch and pretend that we're doing it first".

Edu contract ended in the Summer, discount went from 15% to 10% and lost 3 year warranty. Although you can still get some discount toward Applecare. Sucks though.

I have a MacBook Pro 2011 and it's still going strong and super fast (i7) 5 years later. iMac at work, 2009, still fine for all design work 7 years later.

Had PCs in the past and they don't last even half as long. Yes they're cheaper but it's like comparing a Fiat to a BMW, everyone knows what they'd prefer even though they both have 4 wheels and get you from A to B

Back in the late nineties/early 00s, Mac's had their niche as the go to Desk Top Publishing machine, but now, barring integration with iphones, ipads etc, it doesn't really stand out from the crowd now, ever since M$ sorted out it's problems with Windows and SSD's negating for the most part, the need to reformat a mechanical hard disk every 6 months.

Does it have a specialist production market still?

bought one of these earlier this year excellent computer runs so quickly i understand why people balk at the price but after using it for afew days you understand why people go nuts for apple products ! they do just work everything is seemless not a single crash or splutter in the months i've had it. I did get it through work at a good discount so thats a contributing factor to my commnets. heat added if you don't mind paying this for a computer then buy it you won't be disappointed.

It's not Iris Pro in the Macbook Air, think it's just HD 6000 series which isn't bad. 8GB RAM in an Air is fairly unique but still overpriced I guess - a second-hand Retina MBP is a valid option for around £700 and you could get a quad core too then.

I've got a Mac Mini 2014 which is my way of saying I'm not being anti Apple here in making this post. A DJ friend of mine bought a new Macbook from John Lewis for £1200 or so recently. I was surprised at how uninspiring it was, the keyboard was horrible in my opinion. You do pay more and a lot more for Apple products, you do get a finely tuned experience though, I can only use OSX now instead of the ever worsening Windows 10 which I have to endure at work. Having said that OSX is better in some regards than Windows 10 and worse in others. One thing Windows does so much better than OSX is right click menus, you can debate that Apple don't want you to go there, but the options that provide just works. Windows handles default applications better, right click menu options. OSX is better for window exposition so showing you all available windows at once and it's way ahead of Windows 10 for multiple desktops. The simplicity of VM Ware Fusion and just swiping between OSX, Linux and Windows 10 is unmatched in Windows 10 and of course you can't technically run OSX on many Windows machines anyway.

When your buying a laptop the build quality becomes a lot more important than say a desktop built from individual components. This is because of everything from heat distributions, battery life potential and usability. On raw specifications yes macbooks seem like a ripoff but over time they tend to be worth it because I'd argue they last a lot longer as well as retain more resale value. For me, the touch pad alone is unrivalled by any other windows laptop I've used, as well as the keyboard being a joy to use (im talking about a macbook air) on top of that Osx to me is a lot more streamlined than Windows 10 which bogs my desktop system down with useless junk. I should also add that I haven't noticed a degradation of performance over time with my macbook, unlike every windows system I've used which always ends up needing wiping and starting over. So my point is that if your spending nearly 1k on a laptop you probably want to be sure it lasts a good amount of time and maintains a high level of performance and usability over time. I used to be an apple skeptic but atleast in terms of their laptops I do think they are worth every penny.

The early 2015 model comes with a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, a 5th generation ultrabook U-series CPU aimed more at energy saving than at a power user, specifically it's a Broadwell 5257U. The graphics are integrated, being Intel Iris Pro 6100, comparatively decent at the time of release compared to other integrated Intel solutions. The Retina screen has an appealing 2560 by 1600 native resolution at 227 ppi.

Getting back on topic on whether it is a good deal, though you could spend the same money on a PC laptop and get a better spec with 4 physical cores, you then lose Apple's appealing metal-bodied aesthetics and build quality and the Apple eco system/OS and App store. Though I find it hard to vote on this one as a deal because though I would want a non-ultrabook CPU with four physical cores for heavier workloads, the MacBook is a relatively unique product and this is the best price that I can find for that particular model, at the moment, if you can't wait for the I imagine more expensive new model to come out. For instance, Debenhams and laptopsdirect currently have the early 2015 model for about £905. Have some heat.

I made the same mistake when I posted this yesterday. Unfortunately only one of those offers (I.e £50 or 10% not both) can be used if you read the terms & conditions of each. So not quite the deal it first seems.

Back to the computer talk, by far and away the best deal I got a heads up from on HUKD was my Asus Zenbook UX305FA for £499 last year, which is said to be better than the CA followed it. I'll take my silent core M over super fast performance that I don't need
