Not when you want to use it on your lap or any situation where a flat surface is unavailable.

With the unifying controller, with a compatible model, you can use a mouse at the same time.

This has come up a few times in the last year on HUKD and I have to agree with those that don't get on with theirs.
The trackpad is probably the worst part of it, the buttons feel cheap, the left touch on the trackpad is overly sensitive and when using it on a 27" 2560x1440 monitor the cursor movement feels imprecise.

A great tip I found is to press the Fn key + left mouse button to disable the touchpad left click.

I found it too sensitive and very annoying but every time I disabled it from the settings it would reset after switching the keyboard off and on again, on the K400r at least. Fn + left mouse button eases the pain.

I have one of these - decent for lounging on the couch and browsing the net for day to day use then forget it. The trackpad is very hit and miss - for some reason if I am typing something it sometimes adds the letter c to some of my text without me actually hitting that button.

You have to link the keyboard to the dongle, but yes, it is linked out-of-the-box. You can only link a device to one dongle (up to 6 devices paired to one dongle simultaneously) at a time so you can't put a receiver in two PCs at the same time and move between rooms with the same keyboard. You'd have to take the dongle with you.

IMO the K400r is the best one. The split up/down button on the Plus model is a pain to use in the likes of Kodi.
The K400r has pinch to zoom which the K400 doesn't if you need that. The K400r comes in a box marked just K400 for some reason but the front pictures are different. The windows key icon is a good way to tell the difference.

Tesco was selling these of recently to make way for new model stock. I picked a few up for
4.35 each so might be worth you checking your local stores.

I got one of these last year when they were on offer, but I didn't end up keeping or using it as at the time I did feel my K400r was slightly better with a bit larger trackpad. Unfortunately though, over the last month or two the K400r has been suffering from signal drop off, where it intermittently either doesn't respond or suffers a kind of weird delayed response where if you are typing the letters start to appear a second or so after you press the keys. I suspect something is interfering with it but no idea what. Tried changing batteries and I'm in the same room, not far from it. Getting this one in the hope it will be a bit more resilient to whatever is upsetting my K400r....

I'd say backlighting is more of a 'nice to have' than essential feature, especially at this price. Unless your living room is constantly pitch black, I don't see the urgent need. Sure you may want the lights down/off for watching a movie but then you aren't going to be using the keyboard much apart from play/pause/ff/rw, which you can soon get a feel for. When you are actually using the keyboard for more regular types of PC use you would surely want the room well lit anyway as the often white/light backgrounds on websites are usually unpleasantly bright in a darkened room....

Depends what distro you run on it? What you're really asking in most cases is does it run on Linux?

Someone on this thread said it runs on Ubuntu and my older Logitech wireless keyboard and trackpad combo works on Linux. Generally they just pass all the signals via wireless rather than a cable so if you have a USB port to plug the dongle in and an OS that supports USB keyboards it should be fine.

I was about to ask the same thing as I have the original K400r too. Compared even to standard cheapo keyboards the keys on the K400r are not very responsive especially the space bar (pressing on the sides often doesn't register).

I've rarely had issues with Logitech gear so wonder if we have dud keyboards. I use the K400r a lot rather than just for TV which perhaps it wasn't designed for.

Agreed, I bought some of these for work and they are awful. Complete PITA not having dedicated Home/End/PageUp/PageDown keys when navigating in Excel especially. The keyboard on the whole feels cheap and nasty. Maybe better for living room media, but then it needs a backlight for that.

i belive that the usb recever for this will also work with a trackball(m570), as I have both plugged in and working, Both logitech.
I have this (k400r) a trackball and a rii but I tend to use the rii the most, atm.
Might have to buy either microsft backlit or the k830 to complete the set. and maybe a steam controller too.
I blame Brexit warming of course.

How does this compare to the standard K400? I have one of those and whilst it's great - it's appalling for typing. The keys have a very fixed (perpendicular) action and the slightest angle means you don't register the keypress. Otherwise great, notwithstanding the lack of backlight.

The K830 seems massively overpriced?! It also lacks the very usable feature present on the K400 (and All-in-one apparently) of the extra left mouse button mounted on the LHS of the keyboard.

Furthermore I'm still not sure what's going on with support in Android for the K400. I couldn't get it working for love or money with a N7-2013, but somehow it works on my Beelink MiniMXIII. Anyone have info on that?

K400 (original) in general though is a good, well built, comfortable unit (aside from the typing) with good battery life and I've never had it drop out in normal range. You might want to keep it away from the BT/WiFi chips/antennae a bit tho, it does wonk out a bit if it's on top of stuff (e.g. micro HTPC). Decent price but I'm not sure how you're gaining by getting a K400 Plus over the original...?

There is a driver/utility for them that allows you to pair manually. It can definitely be used to pair multiple devices to the same dongle (hence the unifying receiver moniker), but I don't know if you can also use it to pair the same device to two separate dongles. It's worth a try though if you're really keen. I doubt it will though.

matt101101
14 Sep 16 #67
Well it's not "just a keyboard", is it? It's a keyboard with a built in trackpad, which makes it really useful for certain applications; more so than a separate KB and mouse.
NikLP
14 Sep 16 #66
If you install this and the unifying device driver software on a WinPC you can configure the paired devices pretty easily, so I reckon you could probably whip two Unifying receivers into the same pc, use the same driver to config the kb with both, but really depends if the keyb supports two devices, which sadly I suspect it won't.

As someone who absolutely loathes trackpads... no, games generally don't work on trackpads. Even point-and-click adventures can be frustrating for me. The only games I don't mind on trackpads are the Puzzle Quest games.

But the twin-trackpad Steam Controller isn't abhorrently more expensive than this, and (again, as someone who detests trackpads!) works really rather well in a lot of games, as well as being handy for controlling Windows stuff. If the emphasis is on gaming with a bit of Windows stuff, you should look into the Steam controller, IMO.

I've owned both the old Logitech K400 and the equivalent Microsoft All-In-One Media keyboard, and personally I prefer the Microsoft one. It's very similar but I prefer the touchpad on the microsoft one. It doesn't have such a pronounced "lip/trough" thing, and so I can reach the edges of the trackpad better.

Just my 2 cents. It's £23.90 on Amazon right now:

I have had the older version of this for about 4 years now. A bit small for your everyday desktop or laptop use. But perfect if you have a small tv plug in device or similar. I work with as a network engineer, quite often with computers / servers that have no keyboard mouse plugged in. Handy to keep it in the tool bag, and just pop it out when needed. I have left the Logitech unified adapter (USB receiver) on site many times, but you can just grab another off eBay and carry on.

Best wireless keyboard I've ever had. I paid way more than this & it was still worth it.

Ideal for keeping in the lounge sideboard to grab quickly if I need to use the htpc for something other than kodi, or to fix an issue with it (it's windows based so can be occasionally temperamental). I also chuck the dongle into the server if I ever need to access that (rare cos usually you can just use remote access) & it works perfectly with Ubuntu too.

Have some heat, highly recommend this.
