Great price for LG 55 inch Smart 4K TV, with stock at all my local stores (most have immediate collection)

Please note the measurements on the Argos website are incorrect, they are correct on the Costco site - http://www.costco.co.uk/view/p/lg-55uh615v-55-inch-4k-ultra-hd-smart-tv-hdmi-cable-209253

An in depth review from Amazon:

ByAon 2 August 2016

This review is for the 55inh model, which is the 55UH615V (model number not shown by Amazon).

I've helped friends and family set up quite a few different TVs in the last few years, so I can say without doubt that this is probably one of the least impressive 4K TVs I've ever seen in this price range.

Overall, much of the issues lay in the software and could be ironed out with patches over time - Perhaps even by the time you're reading this. There are still the hardware issues that can never be fixed and that's quite disappointing.

---------------------------------
THE GOOD
---------------------------------
* Its a 4K display. You really can see quite a difference when you play 4K videos on this.

* It up-scales 1080p video quite well.

* You can get the free Plex media player from the LG store, so you can watch your own videos or listen to your own music from a PC, Server, Media Centre, NAS which runs Plex server software or most other media streaming software.

* It allows playback of newer H265/X265/HEVC codecs

* It includes 802.11n Wi-fi for those who need it, and a 1000mb/gigabit Ethernet connector. Very necessary when streaming 4K or 8K content.

* The single ARC HDMI connector works well by passing audio from the device out of the TV's optical/Toslink output. That reduces the number of optical cables you need.

---------------------------------
THE BAD
---------------------------------
* Despite showing compatibility with Magic Remote on the box and manual, it DOES NOT work with any magic remote. I confirmed this in a call with LG support (who were unapologetic about the false advertising.)

* The back-light in at least 5 locations around the edges and it is very obvious during any darker scenes.

* The HDR function is enabled on this model but it does not work well. Firstly due to the back-light bleed mentioned above. There also does not appear to be local dimming in this model, but rather a single back-light level across the entire screen. This may just be a software issue that could be fixed in the future; but who knows.

* The included standard remote feels very cheap and tacky, like one of those cheap universal remotes you find in discount shops. Having had a previous cheaper model myself, we received a very high quality solid remote last year, that didn't feel quite as flimsy as this newer model.

* The upscaler does a really bad job if you're streaming anything less than 1080p. Anything less is going to look quite bad on a 4K TV anyway, but other models have had better scalers than this one.

* It does not sync FPS/Hz with devices connected via the HDMI. If your Blu-ray player, game console or other device operates at say 24hz, 30hz, 50hz, etc - the TV will stick with 60hz and not adapt. This will cause image juddering/stuttering.

* Audio sync. If you use an external audio system via optical cable, you will see an audio sync delay between 350 and 500ms, even if using a very short optical cable. Even then, different apps, such as Plex, Netflix, Prime, would differ and mean adjusting the TV each time you switch app.

---------------------------------
THE OTHER STUFF
---------------------------------
* Most TVs have a central stand to you can get away with a small table. Due to its size this TV has two legs quite far apart. You'll probably need a large table to set it on at least 1metre wide.

* There are only 3 HDMI connections and only 1 of these is compatible with ARC. There is only 1 USB connection and it cannot be connected to a USB hub, neither powered nor unpowered hubs (unlike older models).

nothing at all wrong with LG 4k panels, the picture can be adjusted in the calibration settings, most of the models even have the calibration settings available online. We have 4 of them ranging from 43" to 65" in our house.

I watch mostly films and OLED would be far superior for me than non-OLED. Depends on what you want to watch.

20 Sep 16 #36
Well, I bought one and it's fine.Turned the backlight down and fiddled a bit with the settings to my preference and I'm pleased with it, especially for the money. The 4K programs from Amazon look really good on it. Everyone to their own but I like it and I hated my last Samsung Plasma virtually from the beginning of owning it.
Incase anyone wants to know it has freesat and freeview too.

Any reason why the majority of actual owners are raving about it on the Argos product listing page? Are you saying they're all loons?

Well I'm pretty sure they haven't received any incentives to give good reviews. That would never happen.

I agree OLED looks great, but it’s still a technology that’s in development. LG think OLED is the future. They may well be right, they are not right at the moment though.

The entry level LG OLED televisions on the market now are plagued with teething problems. The general consensus about the image when calibrated, is that it is simply stunning; personally I think they are a bit too dark, but that’s just me. I don’t think it helps that sales assistants don’t calibrate them properly before plugging them in on the sales floor. They look pretty bad, almost cartoon like un-calibrated. People buying entry level OLED, generally all love the picture. However when it comes to watching fast moving sports (football) or scenes in movies, it starts to unravel. Image judder is appalling. Dark scenes in movies are way too dark, so dark even that detail is lost. They haven’t quite mastered how to get the balance right yet. Even people who have spent £3,500 on the higher end OLED models have reported serious issues they never expected. Another complaint is screen burn. Gamers are reporting image retention issues on OLED panels.

For an average person like me, and many other people. We use are television for a number of purposes. I use my television for not only watching movies, also watching fast moving football, and I like to play video games. If I was to spend £2,000 right now on the LG Oled,as great as the picture is.I would be disappointed watching football, gutted that fast moving movies judder, and not be able to play video games for fear of bricking the panel with image retention, and voiding the warranty. Samsung SUHD have a 10 year warranty against screen burn. Worth factoring in.

I might well buy an LG OLED in the future. However right now for me SAMSUNG most definitely has the market. I need a TV fit for purpose.

I really don’t rate LG TVs. Their LED sets all seem to suffer from banding issues, light bleed, even DSE effect. Which I thought was unique only to plasmas. Not sure if it’s down to poor manufacturing. I am in the market foe a 4K TV myself at the moment. To replace an LG plasma with DSE issues. I have done plenty of research, so I have a good idea what I am talking about.

If you’re on a budget looking for a Big Screen 4k TV. Many people on the forums are recommending the 65 inch Hisense 4KTV with HDR which is apparently very good value for money. I have noticed it is starting to go back down in price again. If you hold out for a code from one of the electrical giants ,you could get this 65 inch Beast for £700.00 .There are one two who complain of minimal light bleed in the corners. The vast majority of purchasers are very impressed..

The Samsung JU6400 range is their entry level 4k TV. Which starts at 40 inch and goes up to 65 inch. Its not future proof, There’s no HDR. But the over all quality is much better than the poor quality LG sets, If you were thinking of buying the 55 inch LG above, don’t, buy the 55 inch Samsung JU6400 instead. There is a reason they are selling these LG sets cheap they are ****. And their customer service is even worse.

Me I am holding out to buy a Samsung 65KS8000 with HDR, the Ferrari of modern TVs. The reviews on this quantum dot TV are very impressive. The KS9000 is the curved version if you are in to curved TVs,. The KS8000 is the flat screen. Currently selling at £2100, I am hoping it will reduce to £1700 - £1800 in the run up to Christmas. If like me you love your television for movies, sport. Watch a few videos read the reviews on these 2 models; I promise you will be hooked like me

Oled, might be the technology for the future, it isn’t the right technology for the here and now though. There are still major teething issues with image judder, brightness. The Blacks are too black; it kills the contrast and detail. The picture over all is still far too dark. These Samsung Quantum Dot Displays really are incredible, with the inbuilt HDR, It’s a site to behold. If you haven’t seen a life like 4K image on one of these panels, do so, you wont have seen anything like it. The brightness can not be surpassed by anything out there.

One will be hanging on my Wall Christmas Day .

I looked at a 4k quantum dot samsung when tv shopping, it was one of the best I looked at, along with several lg oleds, a sony and also a panasonic I think, but the TV that really stood out for me was a high end 65" LG 4k hdr Oled, unfortunately it cost about 3K, which was more that I was willing to pay with just a 5 year guarantee. I went for a 1080p Oled in the end and don't regret it, it is plenty bright enough for my needs and the picture quality is outstanding.

I must admit I didn't rate any of the LG LED (LCD) sets I looked at.

Just wondering, has anybody received a free LG tv from Sky at all? If so, do you know what model they usually send out and is it any good (seeing that this 55" model above is supposed to be really bad)? Thank you.
