When did 15.6" become toooo big to deal with?? Yes yes, when you've run through all your "I don't know, wife's never had that issue" ones; back to the point. I'm not sure why they're suddenly shrinking back down to 14", 13", 11". I remember using my manager's clunky old 14" she lent to me and the experience was miserable compared to just 1.6 extra inches (I couldn't afford a laptop at the time).

I think you need to open an account to get the 12 month bnpl option. I just did it. Not sure how reliable this company are when it comes to honoring cashback.

For the past 10-15 years i have only used lenovo/ibm or macbooks, for the amount of time i spend on computers i want it to be a pleasurable experience, i had a job once where we had dells, may have been an xps 13, one of the few laptops that came with linux as a pre-installed option, which was nice but the plasticy feel of the keyboard began to grate.

When running osx or linux a well built machine will last a long time, there just isn't as much reason to upgrade hardware if the software doesn't demand it. I currently use a lenovo at home (x220) and a macbook at work, if push came to shove then is would say i prefer the macbook for the screen - the screen on a macbook is a joy... less so on the lenovo, as for the OS, being able to run a *nix OS and excel on the same machine is nice to have but really as most of my work is done in command line or browser it doesn't really matter so much these days but YMMV.

Unfortunately developments that came to light today mean that lenovo is taking steps to actively discourage installing linux on their systems so it may be that my hand is forced on what my next machine will be - but it will most likely be a mac, my last one lasted 8 years and still had a surprisingly decent resell value - no other machine is going to give you that.

Unrelated but for those who are interested in a laptop similar to this but not this one in particular...

I got the Lenovo 710s a few months ago after someone recommended it on a thread I posted it. It's got specs similar to this one but 256GB SSD and a Iris graphics and its 13.3" with very slim bezels. I got the i5 as it was £100 less and I believe otherwise the same as the i7 but with a slightly lower clock speed.

The 710s is fantastic and it only cost me £500 (including optional 3 year warranty) after discount and cashback, highly recommend if you want the improved graphics and slimmer / lighter form.

Otherwise, this is a cracking deal if the quality of the laptop is anything like the 710s (the keyboard is a bit quirky though and takes a bit of getting used to!! Looks like the same layout). Heated.

Damn, I ordered this because I've been looking for a Laptop with these specs and on the face of it looked like a good deal.

But I'm instantly regretting being involved with Very.co.uk they seem to be universally regarded as a terrible company, some might even call them "shady". Interestingly, I went to cancel the order about 3 minutes after placing it, and what seemed like a simple javascript response denied it on the grounds that "their service is so fast, it's already been processed". Haha, a huge red flag, a website that doesn't allow you to cancel orders.

I expect the cashback won't be credited, and that I'll have a battle not to be charged interest.
jimISere
22 Sep 16 #62
The interest will only be an issue if you don't pay the laptop off in the next 12 months...I think your pretty safe there
Aesrock
22 Sep 16 #63
Aye, I'll be "making a payment" of the value of the Laptop, as soon as the cashback is added to my account, or November the 9th if it isn't. Which should be fine right? On a decent website that would clear your balance, and you could close your account.

Does anybody have experience using Very.co.uk in this regard? I really don't want to be logging in a year from now to check that the balance on my account, has indeed cleared the BNPL debt. Cause according to their ToS, it doesn't get added to your statement until 12 months from the order date.

I'm not unsure of the process, it "should" be straightforward, pay off the balance before the interest free period ends and I'm good, generally speaking this is how it works.

I am unsure of dealing with Very.co.uk, going from what I've read, they have the ability to f**k up even the simplest tasks.

That said, now that the order has been processed, there is a clear option on their website to pay off the BNPL balance (as opposed to just making a payment towards your balance), which wasn't there as an option previously. Which addresses my query regarding the operation of their site.

Yeah I'm still waiting for the cashback to be applied, I've paid the postage, and the £379.99. Gotta say I was wary of dealing with Very, but so far it's went fine. If the cashback is applied by the 8th, then I can safely say the service has been good.

Ofc how they make their money is there's always gonna be a certain percentage of people who mess up and end up being charged interest. Missing things like the postage being applied separate from BNPL, or not realising that if they don't clear the balance within 12 months, they are retroactively charged interest for the year.

You have 12 months to pay it off, before any interest is added. That could be £100 one month, £20 the next, as long as the total is cleared before the 12 months is up

I just bought the item and opted for the BNPL option. I can't find anywhere in the statement it says "You can avoid interest on these BNPL items ..." as it says on yours. So you haven't been charged interest at all?

Can anyone shed any light on what I've done wrong and am being charged interest? I followed the instructions precisely and thought there was no interest too if paid off by Sept 17. I have definitely used the BNPL scheme but am being hit with 39% interest! Are others too?
lookingforadeal
4 Nov 16 #100
I suggest you contact very via the online chat and ask them why you've been charged interest.
ragingpup
4 Nov 16 #101
I have. They had the attitude of "of course you're paying interest, that's what you do in bnpl". I have no evidence that this laptop deal was interest free.
jimISere
4 Nov 16 #102
Then unfortunately you haven't set it up as others on here have done. Suggest your only option would be to pay it off at your earliest convienance to avoid further interest charges
Aesrock
4 Nov 16 #103
You avoid interest by selecting the BNPL option when buying, then you clear the balance within 12 months.

I suspect what has happened to you, is they applied the delivery charge of £3.99 last month, which doesn't come under the BNPL and as such is payable on your monthly statement. Similar to a credit card if you fail to meet a minimum monthly payment (even though there's probably only £3.99 on your statement) they charge you £12.

I think they do it this way to catch people out, I put £3.99 on my balance straight away to cover the postage, but by the time the postage was "payable" it had been moved and used to pay off part of the BNPL laptop . So I had to log in and pay £3.99 into my balance again the month it was due.

Unless that is you haven't been charged exactly £12 and it explicitly says on your statement that you're being charged interest at 39.9% APR (by my calculations that should come out closer to £14 quid a month), then as previously stated the best advice would be to clear that balance asap, and join the swarm of people on the net that tell others not to buy from Very.
ragingpup to Aesrock
4 Nov 16 #104
Thanks Aesrock. I selected the bnpl and have paid the minimum monthly balance twice. I'm struggling to understand how the postage charge can trigger me paying interest if it says 'no interest for 12 months' and you pay the minimum monthly payment?? Really confused! I've now paid off all but the 100 pound which should be paid off by the cashback should that be paid. Can't believe I'm the only one to be bit with this? Are others checking their statements? If not, check em guys!
Aesrock
4 Nov 16 #105
Ok, it seems you got f'd over by them then, if you've had to make two minimum payments. Sorry to hear that, apparently their customer service is some of the worst in retail, so you'd face a battle to rectify that situation.

Glad it's all going so smoothly for you guys!

I haven't received the £100 cashback, so I called very on Saturday - spent nearly an hour on the phone speaking to three different advisors. I was told that the order did not go through as 'buy now pay later' at the time of the transaction (even though this was the option I selected). So, after some faffing around with different advisors, the order was transferred to 'buy now pay later' and I was told that I would receive an email once the £100 cashback was sorted. The advisor also told me that they had seen this (very) scenario where orders were not put under 'buy now pay later' even though it was the selected checkout method.

So, the next day I received an email from very which stated that as I had not selected 'buy now pay later' at the time of the order I was not entitled to the £100 cashback! Absolute rubbish!

I've posted on Very's Facebook page and I'm hoping this gets a response from them. These kinds of offers feel incredibly scammy - I bet very automatically decline a set percentage of the cashback claims, hoping the customer will just go away.

I've just had a response from Very - they have accepted there has been a mistake, apologised and left me the £100 credit on my account. Hmmmm. Came only after facebook threats and comments, but fair enough, they have acted on it. they shouud do the same for anyone affected.

Wow, glad you sorted it. I too posted on their Facebook page and they followed up with the same message, 'your not entitled to cashback' rubbish. Now I'm asked to write to them. Love wasting my time with these people.

Very have completely changed track and are now telling me that the cashback offer was not on the day I placed the order (22nd September). Despite the banner advertising the deal being on the website on that day and nothing about any start dates in the terms and conditions. So many excuses not to pay - you couldnt make it up with this lot.
