out of curiosity does any of you remember how much a 90's/00's tub cost ?
Current price for a 1.315Kg tin of Quality Street is £7.00 but they usually offer this at around £5 nearer to Xmas. It's a better deal if you can hang on that long !

I remember my dad buying one in 1990 and it was £10!
So two new ones = 1 old one so for £7 its cheaper now plus inflation as well £10 then would be £15 now so you could get four tubs for the price of one in 1990

12 Sep 161#53
In 1977/78 they were about £4.99 for the large tins, thats what, about £20-30 today?
3 of these are larger than one of the ones back then but cost half the price. so in effect they are cheaper now.

35 years ago (1981) the RRP for the 5lb tin was £9.49p.
Just like today it was discounted (although not via a multibuy) and I seem to remember £6.99 being a "good" price throughout the 1980s.
Am certain the tin was kept at 5lbs throughout the decade but there were smaller tins available and I remember
glass jars as well for those who wanted less.
Even though today's "big tin" (plastic) contains less, they are certainly a lot cheaper to buy NOW.
Modern production, cheaper ingredients, multibuys and lower producer/retailer margins are actually giving you much more value.
So even though it takes THREE of today's tins to fill ONE old tin, it is probably costing you half the price in real terms!
But it's not really a good thing for the nation's health. At one time these really were a once a year purchase whereas now they are too easy/tempting/cheap to obtain - particularly with multibuys.

Less commented on is that the assortment has been changed for lower cost items - for example the Galaxy truffle is long gone from Celebrations, as is Topic, with those expensive hazelnuts. There are similar changes in Heroes. I suspect that the mix has also changed with fewer of those chocolates that are more expensive to make.
