Leaks a lot of smoke/heat and for smoking that's what you need consistent heat and a good amount of smoke. As a normal coal BBQ this isn't a bad one as it's fairly large and will cook for a large family event. The bottom is a bit flimsy but as long as your not really wheeling it around a lot then this shouldn't be a problem. Recommend getting the cover for it unless your wheeling it back in the shed after every use. Use good restaurant grade coal as well this will burn better and longer. Enjoy

​a good way to start smoking is to get a 57cm weber kettle, anything above the compact model but if you can stretch to it a mastertouch (180 quid) They are great all rounders as a BBQ that can also smoke well.

If your looking for a smoker that can BBQ then I suggest a pro Q frontier bullet smoker (230 quid)

Also worth considering if your budget goes higher for smokers are weber Smokey mountains...

Or if your local ASDA has any left then the offset Oklahoma Joe's they are clearing for 100 quid, it's a beast at 90 kilo but with a few cheap mods is an excellent offset much better then this cheapy in the OP.

As a last option building your own UDS (ugly drum smoker can be done with limited DIY skill for around 250 quid.

This BBQ is brilliant.

I always fancied making my own smoker, but, hell... when do we ever get enough decent weather to make this viable on a regular basis. 3-5 times a year? I'd rather have a bit more space in the garden.

A lot of mods will be required to make this anywhere near good enough for smoking meat. Good as a general BBQ using just the central chamber. Been this price at homebase for a few weeks now with a reduced cover for £14.99 too.

Landmann stuff is terrible! Auntie has one that fell to bits after a summer of use. Rusty, wobbly and generally a poor cooker (was gas). Not sure on warranty, but if you are considering spending this much money, buy a Webber! Oh and they are usually reduced to about £40 in B&Q in the autumn (Webbers)

am guessing there must be some more sales of bbq equipment now that summer is endign, anyone seen any other deals of interest?

Just use some fire grade sealant when you are putting it together to stop draughts.

I also use fire cord to seal the main lid as it's not really airtight.

If you want a smoker then build a UDS for a lot less than £100!
Something that actually does not leak smoke, holds temps & something you made!

Got one a couple of years ago end of season from Tesco for about £30-40. Agree about taking some work - but after a liberal helping of some red silicon type seal (forget which one), it was much better at maintaining temperature and not leaking too much. Coal quality also makes a huge difference. We have had some great results with Ribs and joints, but even simple chillis etc benefit greatly from smoking (even made with simple smoked mince once - cheap and suprisingly good). Overall, not sure it spend a 100 on one though, but for what we paid, I dont regret it. A better thermometer is essential though.

I'm by no means a BBQ expert but I bought one of these earlier in the year thinking it was a regular BBQ. I was wrong... It's a bit of a pain to use as you have to regulate the temperature by opening a side door a little (or a lot) and then the chimney cover a little (or a lot). Not only that food is incredibly smokey, hence the product name "smoker". I wish I'd just got a regular BBQ or gas BBQ in the end but as Hadleigh101 said, it can be used as a regular BBQ too by putting coals into the larger section.

Cant believe how essential great quality coals are. Only just realised this myself after a lifetime of using cheap supermarket stuff. Definitely a case of you get what you pay for, would never go back now.
