People keep asking what the "Pro" moniker on these devices is for without stopping to think for a second what a "pro" even is. A professional, quite simply, is somebody who earns a living from doing a certain thing.

As a result, the iPad Pro is the perfect device for anybody who can use it as part of their workflow or to earn a living. These will include professional artists or graphic designers who can benefit from the Pencil support that only the "pro" iPads provide.

I've owned both this and the Surface Pro and, for me, the latter is better as I can run certain desktop apps that have no equivalent on iOS. But I can equally see why somebody would want a lightweight device for drawing in, say, Procreate with the sophistication provided by the Apple Pencil. Yes, the Surface Pen has similar functionality but it doesn't have, for instance, shading and tilt support.

Sometimes we just have to use the best tools for the job and it really doesn't matter who makes them. If you don't need the Pencil or simply don't want a huge iPad with 4 GB of RAM, this device isn't for you. But that doesn't mean it's merely a fashion accessory – for some people, they will earn back the cost of this in no time whatsoever.

iPad Pro is fantastic but 32GB isn't enough for it....

Actually, you're both sort of right. ARM design the instruction set which they license to Apple just like they license it to Samsung and a bunch of other chip makers. Apple designs their own chip that uses that instruction set though.

Think of it like how Intel and AMD both use the x86 and x64/x86-64. AMD license x86 from Intel and Intel license x64/x86-64 from AMD but they then both design their own chips that implement those instruction sets.

Apple use British ARM chips in the iPad and iPhone. They make minor modifications to the chip design. ARM being an acronym for Acorn RISC Machines - who used to make the BBC, Electron and Archimedes. Sadly British owned & based ARM was recently sold to a Japanese company.

Great device. If you don't like Apple, why click on the link? I'm nearing the point of replacing my Ipad 3rd gen but only due to it having been dropped down the stairs breaking the loudspeaker. Considering the Pro, but probably the smaller version with larger hard-drive.

Most likely there isn't a new 12.9 iPad till next year but it's been a year now and it's the holiday season so I'm hoping there is a 12.9 released, the rest next year. I'm not too happy to be buying a year old iPad personally. Even though it's still a great device!

I'm just thankful that my Network sent me this one instead of the iPad Air 2. I paid £50 upfront for 128GB and only paying £38 a month with 15GB of data lol. They originally sent me the Air 2 64GB but it was scratched, I asked for a replacement and I got this one, had it for 6 months now....

The only iPad that doesn't support iOS 10 is the original one released 6 year ago.

You can buy it for less directly from Apple - refurbished, it's true, but as new for all practical purposes. And they have larger memory versions as well...

I've had my ipad 5 years. It still does what I want it to. It is still on its original battery too so not sure why a current model would be out of date in a couple of years.

I also use a Samsung tablet for work. Over 2 years old and going strong.

32GB is okay for some as clearly not everyone requires loads of internal storage.

I would never spend anything like that on a phone!

I have this iPad and it's great, I couldn't go back to a smaller size now, it's so nice just having something you can use as a TV. People say it's too big... no it's not, you'd never walk around with a 9.7 inch iPad, you'd carry it in a bag.... so what is the difference? You can easily fit this in a bag and it's pretty light.

It's replaced my Laptop in a way my old 9.7 inch iPad couldn't, it's even slightly bigger than my Laptop screen lol.

Replace 'ipad' with tablet and yes you're right. I recently went away and normally take both my laptop and iPad. This time I just took the iPad and to be fair I could do about 90% of the things I wanted to do with relative ease. Sometimes though... you just miss a mouse!

I agree with the initial comments above, this doesn't seem enough memory.

Sold my Surface Pro 3 i5 256gb model and bought a 128gb ipad 9.7 and more than happy with the swap over.

Big iPhone comments and elitism between brands gets boring. I have used my ipad more in the 1 month I have owned it than the Surface owning it over 12months.

All down to buyers needs and preference.
Though companies do enjoy the sheep mentality and unfortunatly Sony are having a bash at it with the confusing introduction of Playstation 4 Pro!
The 4k TV and HDR is yet another mindfield for consumer confusion.
