I have the similarly specced HP Envy 15-j151sa and it is brilliant for the £370 I paid.
This is hot.

Hi - Does "similarly specced" include the same processor as this one? If so, I would be grateful for a performance (no gaming) perspective from an actual user. Thanks in advance. :-)

Noticed some initial wi-fi instability that disappeared after updating drivers with HP's pre-installed tool. Been pretty solid on both Virgin Media Super Hub 2ac and BT Smart Hub since.

Wifi issues seems to be it needs a software update once you open it out of the box just

Good to see full HD laptops coming down to reasonable prices. This looks pretty good for the price - shame about the AMD CPU (heat production).

Its an AMD-A10 apu - not sure if its the exact same or not.
Performance is great - never had any issues or slowdown, other half uses it for Adobe Photoshop etc so fairly intensive too.

There should be a HP settings logo on the taskbar near the clock, click on this and get it to check for updates, then install everything.

I recently bought this laptop direct from HP and can confirm that there aren't any apparent WiFi issues. If you're a student you can get it for £299 direct from HP's student and staff store.

A 2TB HDD instead of a smaller SSD is silly. Cheap laptops like this need all the speed they can get, and not including SSD makes this a cold deal.

Hi Guys,
The issue with the wifi is an easy fix.
1: go into the power settings and set the wifi adapter to maximum performance
2: go into device manager, Right click wifi adapter and choose to find updates online.
I've a small (SFF) desktop with an AMD-A10. Upped the RAM to fast 32GB (I know, it's probably overkill even if these processors share RAM),and with an SSD it's blazing fast for Photoshop and Illustrator. Flies while browsing, using MS apps etc.

Just shows how inefficiently coded most modern computer applications (and Windows itself) are that you need such high performance components to achieve proper productivity. The ever increasing power of hardware breeds ever increasingly bad programmers...

2 Sep 161#25
Yup totally agree. Moore's law has become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Lazy programmers write bloated code that current hardware can barely handle; the next gen hardware is twice as fast and arrives just in time for the next round of bloatware. Repeat ad infinitum..

Just heads up don't bother going to the Stirling Sprinkerse Store. I reserved and arrived at the store, kept waiting for approx 25 mins while they looked for it, All 3 are on display. Offered 10% off display model, pointed out there was already 10% off nothing else offered. Brought out my trade in and was told they couldn't do it in that store and I would need to go to Falkirk (where I had come from) to do trade in. No stock in Falkirk. Waste of time. Also you can only have the trade in or 10% off.

Similar laptop on the HP site but only a 1tb drive. £349.99 but down to £314.99 with the site 10% off voucher and a further 3% off at topcashback assuming its a consumer laptop, more with a business laptop. That would take it down to about £305 approx.
When I purchased it was £189.99 but the price went up to £209.99 as stock ran out.
The chipset in cpu terms is somewhere between i3 and i5 performance and for gaming performance operates at about i3 level with discrete graphics or i7 with integrated graphics.
My Toshiba performed very badly until a fresh install of windows 10 and then it became a very fast laptop. Toshiba install a huge amount of bloatware and HP might be the same. Just manages Fallout 4 at playable frame rates at native resolution and low detail.

what is the 10% code?

Apologies, my mistake it appears its only for single laptop purchases over £599. It doesn't even work if you add 2 of these laptops but the code was FLASH10

Just so everyone talking about the "bad reviews" 95% are to do with a software issue with the wifi card not turning back on when comming out of sleep when battery saver mode is on, this got solved with doing updates just that 95% of customers wont do the HP background updates
Yeh but ssd would be beneficial to some fast boot up and fast data transfer better than odd movie in my book

you can add an ssd to this one for less than 120 squids

As mannin said, an SSD upgrade is fairly straightforward and cheap. Trying to upgrade the built-in display is far from easy and expensive, plus you would be left with an unused display panel.
In the case of upgrading the built-in display, it's not just the learning curve - there's also the problem of sourcing the appropriate parts.

They have now dropped the price to £359.97 without the code, as its expired. I caved in and ordered one for collection tomorrow.

Just got mine today, went with the 15-ah100 model direct from HP. I'm very impressed with the speed but I'm looking to upgrade with the SSD and extra ram like yourself!
I'm not an expert on SSDs, would you mind sharing which one you went for and how easy is it to install? I'm looking to get a 500gb+ drive and don't mind spending a bit extra to get the better speeds, could you recommend any? Thanks.

i have a kingston v200 120Gb which i took from my broken desktop and wiped to re-build in this system.
installing is very simple and makes a massive difference in speed to this laptop.
id hold off on the extra 8GB of ram just for the mo. i am having issues with mine, it will not run in dual channel even though they are identical sticks.
the main issue i am having with the 16GB is windows and bios are seeing all 16GB but i am only getting 7.5GB ram and then 8.5GB Hardware reserved. not sure it can be sorted either as the bios has not got a setting for shared system ram? not sure if anyone has any ideas how to fix this.
The only way i can see sorting it is by the bios, which again i don't have the option to tweak shared memory?

Thanks for letting me know, I'll look into the Kingston v200.
And sounds like a good idea for me to hold fire on the ram upgrade given your experience! Hopefully someone on here can provide a solution, I'm not too sure. Maybe 16gb isn't the capacity in that case, is this explicitly stated anywhere? Perhaps 8gb is the max.

I think most Carrizo laptop motherboards are only single channel memory. My Toshiba is as far as I can tell even though it has 2 4GB sodimms and should be dual channel. Just google Carrizo and single channel memory for all the news reports. Again my Toshiba has fixed 512MB of memory taken for the integrated graphics with no option to change it in the bios but my A10 8700p laptop only has a 720p screen so not such a big issue. Still a big upgrade on my previous A10 7100 laptop that did have dual channel memory mind you.

Have you tried using a Linux distro to see if that sees 16GB? You can just download a live CD version to boot from a USB stick if you don't want to install on your hard drive.
Opening post
Looks like a great spec for money...

I might add that I bought a laptop based on the same chipset but only a 720p screen for a lot less.
