Garmin nuvi 56 LMT sat nav with free lifetime maps and traffic at Aldi. 5 Inch screen seems decent enough. I know a lot of people have smart phones that have google maps etc but some people like myself still have sat navs.
Seemed a good price when i went into my local Aldi that opened a second larger store in Leigh, greater manchester today. Not sure if this is nationwide or just my local store.
Plugged into my computer and within 2 minutes from downloading the software from http://www.garmin.com/express i was downloading and installing updates.

Free Lifetime maps and traffic = Lifetime of the device, which in my experience of Garmin is a couple of years.

Is this WinCE based or Android?
Do you know if it's possible to install custom mapping software like iGo Primo on it? My F&H Ebuyer/Navigo one from a few years back won't get signal anymore.

Nether. Your best bet is to buy a cheap binatone one from Argos/Ebay as it's CE based and stick iGo on it. that's what I did. I also stuck Tom Tom on it but Igo was much better.

Funny enough I have one of these as well. I had TomTom installed on it work fine then the GPS got screwed up somehow. The arrow would be in a field whilst driving!!!!

Lucky you. Mine lasted less then 2. USB connector at the back failed. No uk place to send it to fit repair, was the USA iirc. Wanted 45 quid. Barely out of warranty.

Beginning to think that this was store specific.
I have trawled through the past couple of weeks on ALDI website weekly offers and I cannot find any mention of this.

Google maps allows you to download areas if you need to for offline use. Go to the offline option to do this. I did this the last time I went abroad.

It'll be store specific as its stores reducing the stock coz it's old. Was a special buy back in the summer, so will only be this price in stores that still have stock. Desperately need a new one to replace my broken one but was oos in my nearest a few wks after it came out. Great buy tho!

only issue I've ever had was a manufacturer recall regarding the battery. the issue was handled very professionally.

For those that purchased and/or used one of these, was it any good?
Would you buy again? Or would you change to something else?

Not got this particular model, but reviews of it suggest the same problem I have with my two Garmins - appalling software.
No personal knowledge of TomTom, but they must surely be better than Garmin to be so successful. I have a Nuvi 310D (2006) and a Nuvi 2595LMT (2012). The older one still works fine but it has no free updates, and the newer one doesn't like getting hot and refuses to switch on if it's a warm day (odd that).
The older one has poorish software but in 6 years you'd expect that to have improved - but it hasn't. It's actually worse than the older model, and that seems standard with Garmin. I know of no other device with such an unintuitive operating system - the wife can't use it at all, and I have to work at it. It's completely illogical, makes no sense at all, and it's a bit like comparing Windows 3.1 with Windows 10.

I've had one for 8 years, battery has been dead for at least the last 4 years, so only works plugged in though.

Hi. If you or someone you know can solder then there are vids on youtube showing how you can resolder the usb. Just search "Garmin USB repair". I bought a cheap "for repair" 1490 off ebay which I suspected was a battery or USB connector problem. Turned out to be loose USB. I followed vids and managed to fix it.
