Picked up a manual lawn aerator for £2 from Wilko in Gateshead. Not sure if national deal or not, but there were at least 10 available on the shelf.
It looks exactly the same as this one on Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingfisher-Hollow-Tine-Lawn-Aerator/dp/B0060LSEQU/ which is £15, only difference is the colour.

I used the garden fork method about March for the first time, worked wonders, better than any chemical lawn food.

honestly??
your lawn needs exactly same things as yourself:
1 gas exchange - that's why u aerate it
2 water - sprinkler will sort it out
3 "food" - that's why u should fed it
4 sunshine -
once u understand it and get it balanced all 4 of them u will have a nice lawn

Use a garden fork, 45 degree angle, lift the turf slightly, aerates the lawn beautifully.

At the moment my grass is still growing at a couple of inches a week. I'll have a look in my local in the morning.
