I use Vyke for cheap international calls but they now give a free UK mobile numbers in the app (no SIM required). I use my number for online sign ups and selling on Gumtree. Totally free as long as you use it. You have to pay for credit to call or send texts but you can also call other users free.

Exactly same issue, I tried on different days with different VPN software and same error, so I gave up. I guess it was possible when the OP tried, but by the looks of things, they might have closed that way to verify the account through a VPN?

I'm struggling as well.
Connected to my VPN. Signed in to US App Store. Downloaded Freedom Pop then registered. After creating the account and going to the verification bit some error popped up but it still sent the email with the code. I then went back and I logged in from the start of the app where it says log in or create new account then it gave me options for a new number but they're all UK numbers.

I know. But their service is CRAP!!!CRAP BIG WAY....
Three is giving 200MB free every month too and now all of Europe is "Feel at Home" so can use allowance and make call as in UK. Reliable provider, not crappy VoiP as FreedomPop...

FreedomPop gives free numbers too on iPhones ...just download app, install and sign up for new account: no credit card required, just email address to confirm registration. Free 200 mins/texts, no internet of course. I use them to sign up for Tesco International Calling Card, as every time they(Tesco) give £1 for free for new number. Done more than 50 times and speak for free on international numbers...

I got a 'free' Freedom Pop SIM last year, was charged hefty postage and auto-signed up for add-ons for two months without realising. They wouldn't refund. Haven't tried their app though and probably won't tbh.

Thanks. Strange, still getting an invalid error when trying to validate the account via the VPN. I'd be interested to know if anyone is able to create and activate a new US account to see how that's done at present :S

Do you know which VPN app you used? trying this and after creating the account they say you need to activate it with the verification code they send to your email. If you are in the VPN connection, I keep on getting "Incorrect Password - unable to verify. Please contact support".
Whereas if I remove the VPN and try again, it is recognized successfully but it gives me a UK number rather than US (even though the apple ID is an US account and the Freedom app has been downloaded from itunes US?)
If you could let me know the VPN app you use, I could give it another go... thanks

the 07xxxx number can be very expensive personal number but not mobile number. can you see the difference? using personal number you not be able to receive the sms messages as it's just premium non-geo expensive number only.

Tried it. Uninstalled it.
Outbound text & inbound text OK. Outgoing call was gappy, not of usable quality. Incoming call did not connect, and didn't use the voicemail greeting I'd recorded. I was using the Android app (Android 5.1) through a Virgin Mobile data connection.

For £3 I get nearly 300 minutes of calls to Ireland with Vyke! Use it on wifi or through a local number (0113 - Leeds?) when I'm out and about, which is included in my plan. All from the app.

0870 numbers are inclusive from most landlines like Sky, BT, Virgin, Post Office and SSE Talk landline.
Virgin mobile also have tariffs that gives you free minutes (on top of your usual monthly allowance) to 0870 numbers from 1000 minutes to 5000 minutes per month.
Vodafone offer an add-on to call 0870 numbers. You will need to pay £2.50 extra per month and can be cancelled anytime.
EE also offer 300 minutes of 0870 numbers for an extra £3 per month.

Just text 08MINS to 150 and you will get 300 minutes to call 0870 numbers for £3 per month. This add on can be cancelled anytime. Have a look below at EE website for more details:
Can u call n text free if both using vyke if other person abroad

Yep, free calls to all other users, quality is excellent. Don't use free messages as mostly use whatsapp. Mainly call landline in Ireland, around 1p per minute :sunglasses:

Can you get a free number with WhatsApp? Or does that only work with your own mob number?
Logged in with the username and password from when I requested a FreedomPop sim a few months back, no idea what I did with the sim card but it's given me the number from that sim as well as 200 free mins + texts a month etc

I've had my free Vyke number for 4 months. It's free as long as you use it and they send a message if it's about to expire so you can can make a call to keep it free.

I tried the freedompop android app earlier on this year. The lag was terrible. It was like a news broadcast that goes wrong, the conversation was not practical at all due to the delay.
I also could not find any info about what calls were included with the minutes, so I emailed them, and they told me, if the number connects when you dial it from within the app its included, if it doesn't connect, its not included. But the same number would sometimes connect and other times not connect.
I hope it has improved, its free, and would be a very useful product for some.

They have improved, but not that much on Android. On Apple iPhones their call quality is great. But we were talking about getting numbers, not call quality. I would avoid FreedomPop as a call handler, I just use them to get UK/US number which I can use in different ways

Easy:
1. Delete FreedomPop UK app ( if you have one installed)
2.Download FreedomPop USA app(US iTunes account needed and easy to register)
3.Use VPN to make look connection is from USA
4.Install and press"Create New Account"
Job done. On iPhone only. Android doesn't work for me to open account. But after opening account, can use Android-no problems.

They bill via Direct Debit.
Last time I used it; you could gain call/text credit by calling you own Uptalk number.
