Staying in the ClubHotel Riu Merengue , it's a riu so not a 5* but a pleasant hotel to stay in.

I've not tried other hotels so may be worth adjusting, other dates are +£200.
Bit of a bargain a Caribbean getaway.

I was believing the horror stories and feeling sympathetic until someone posted a link to an article in the daily fail. Now I'm not so sure.
Agree if you're going all that way then the south of the Dominican has better hotels/climate/beaches and probably worth paying another couple of hundred quid for

Went in 98 I think and it was brill. These weekend passes for locals didn't exist back then. Great memories, won't be going back to ruin them
Got married there 12 years ago. Lovely hotel although was extremely poorly along with over 200 other guests. Don't know if it was the hotel or destination. Sister in law went a few years ago and again was sick. That being said it may be better there now but just a word of warning

So that was in 2004? There were also major issues with this resort in 2005 and 2006 when I went. I wish I'd trawled back to the 2004 and 2005 reports on tripadvisor before I visited. The cheap deal (almost the same wasn't worth suffering for the next 3 years from the long term effects of whatever made me ill.

Stayed at Merengue & Bachata some time ago when they we OK. Now they are run down and very poor. Drinks week, beach dirty and entertainment awful. If you want to stay on the north coast I would recommend either the Iberostar or Gran Ventana - both SO much better than the out of the way Rui complex. If your looking for better resorts more like you would find in Mexico then go to the south coast resort of Punta Cana - much more modern, larger resorts. The north still has a traditional, old fashioned feel to it.

Most AI,s water down the spirits but it's the worst ever here . Every new bottle was already opened , cases of vodka , all pre opened , about 95% water . Mind you we did spot unopened stuff being sold to the locals and Puerto Ricans behind the pool bar . The food was very poor and lots of it . Cheap nasty resort .

The luminous cocktails at the main bar with no alcohol in them , the locals taking over the place with weekend passes , the hours and hours sat on the toilet , last nights food on the breakfast menu, the cleaners and waiters miming to records for the main entertainment , loud yanks apparently drunk ( though where they got the alcohol from is a mystery) .. Sweet sweet memories ..

Stayed at Rui bachata same complex and wouldn't go back at any price . Alcohol was so weak you could drink all day ( and one rainy day we did ) with no effect ...basically water. Then there's the almost guaranteed stomach cramps and worse . I got food poisoning ended up on a drip , 2 injections , and a pill .. £500 at the doctors ( insurance paid) . The docs was the busiest place on the resort. This place is always being pushed on holidaypirates ( Thomson owned) at cheap rates .. Awful place.

This hotel had considerable issues a few years back. Hopefully it has improved since.
I flew here from manchester for 2 weeks in easter holidays for schools. Exact same price.
Not the worst place but i warn you, not very Caribbean at all. Secluded, £50 dollar taxi to get anywhere and very run down, over populated place.
Hotel was good. Entertainment a bit repetitive.
