Do they check the foot passengers for booze on embarkation like P&O do at Hull?

I've never noticed that on this route, but it has never happened to me at Hull either. Surely it is too time consuming... But I am interested in your experiences, I did notice that Hull (P&O) don't deliver your booze bought on board until you disembark which ain't the case on the DFDS route.

No, but they do watch people like hawks in the bar area to make sure the women aren't topping up their diet cokes with that bottle of vodka in their handbag.
Meanwhile on the Hull to Zebrugge P&O route, the "bouncers" into the bar areas will ask the women to open all bags for a look in when they enter the bar/entertainment lounges.
Although I live less than 2 miles from the DFDS North Shields terminal, I used to prefer P&O, as DFDS always have your eyes out if you want to take the car (and fill the boot with Belgian beer) and Bruges is far more car friendly than Amsterdam/Rotterdam.

It's good if not full of stag parties and the sea isn't rough, quite a few of these get docked in Amsterdam and then turn round and go straight back.

Went on one of these in June and thoroughly enjoyed it (despite rough seas on the return sailing).
Well worth upgrading to a sea view cabin (we actually upgraded for -£3  ) and pay for breakfast as the breakfast is pretty good, but I'd take something on to eat in the evening (although the sandwiches in the café didn't seem to bad a deal).
Heineken in the bar was €4.50 for a pint.
We got 4hrs in Amsterdam (could have had 5, but we got the first bus back).
Bags were never checked, and there were a few people topping up drinks under the tables in the bar (which was almost empty).

Did you upgrade on the day? (I agree I've had a Commodore class cabin with a free mini bar in the past) and agree take sandwiches on the way there and grab something from a Dutch supermarket on the way back.

It's important that people know Bruges is in Belgium and not France. Imagine thr embarrassment of disembarking with a pocketful of French Francs.
Was describing their nationality mate. You wouldn't describe a Brazilian as Portuguese. They are Brazilian.

We got checked when we got on at Newcastle as did a few others. It seemed to be random. The alcohol in the on board shop wasn't too badly prices though if you don't get any on. If they do confiscate any off you, you can collect it when you get back to Newcastle

We were meant to go in December, but my wife wouldn't get on the ferry and DFDS let us reschedule. They swapped the trip to another date and said to just login and change it again when we wanted to try again. When I logged in and went to change the date, the option was there to upgrade at £3 less than we'd paid for the non-seaview cabin.
Glad we did, as the cabin was on deck 9, just under the bridge, so we had a great view.

They didn't on our trip. Nobody was searched in the line before we got on and we were pretty far back in the queue.

I wouldn't advise taking your kids to Amsterdam. Wander down the wrong street and you'll face some pretty awkward questions from them...

Oh, and if you're worried about sea sickness, get Boots Motion Sickness tablets, they're fantastic.
My wife was violently sick on the way out on pretty smooth water (she wouldn't take any pills before the trip as she thought she'd be ok), on the way back she took the Boots pills and was fine, even though the sea was very rough

They searched a few groups infront of us on my only trip 18 months ago. I live locally so lots of people I know go regularly and some have had alcohol confiscated at boarding.
Pretty sure the cheapest drink at the bar was £4 for a CAN of Fosters. The pints were flat and I just can't abide that, especially at £5 plus.
If your planning on having a few then just overpack your luggage and bury it at the bottom. If possible put it into a pop bottle or pre mix it.

Really? I've flown several times to Amsterdam and would never ever go on the boat again. They do search you, maybe not every person but I have seen it happen with my own eyes so for you to just say outright "no" is completely wrong.
monkeyhanger75
22 Sep 16#43
In my experience I have never been searched nor seen anyone else searched on embarkation, on many trips there - what is completely wrong about sharing my experiences? Maybe you just look a bit shifty?
They should only be concerned with you drinking booze they haven't supplied when in their bars.

I'm sure as a Wallsend lad called monkeyhanger your a real upstanding citizen! I haven't been searched but I have seen it happen on my only trip. I don't believe what your saying and neither should anyone else.
monkeyhanger75
22 Sep 16#45
So you've been on the ferry once and claim to have seen it happen, therefore it happens all the time? They have no need to search your bags upon entry to the ship for booze. They do have reason to stop you dronking your own booze in their bats, but you could take what you liked on board and drink it in your own cabin if you so wished. Wallsend? No, other side of the Royal Quays - there you go making assumptions again.
