Not really, although it's all the DLC's the problem is Bungie effectively invalidate all the previous content when they release a new DLC so it means all you get in reality from the the base game and previous DLC's are a few story missions and base level strikes which I'd say are the worst part of Destiny. The story missions are largely dull and lack any interesting design and the story in general with Destiny is terrible. Where the game really shines is in the six person raids and unfortunately Bungie have left the older raids to gather dust, they haven't been updated in any way so the equipment from the first two raids (Vault of Glass and Crota's End) and Prison of Elders ( the three person horde mode in House of Wolves) is useless for current content. Plus because you can use much higher level armour and weapons, they're much easier than they used to be. Since there's no reward for doing the older raids, few people do them now and the raids are complex, it takes time to learn the mechanics and they're fun so it's something you want to do repeatedly - you need six people in total (I know less for the first two but not with beginners) and at this point in the game that's going to be difficult to find.
Also specific events which occurred during the DLC have all stopped since that DLC finished - during the Dark Beyond you'd get Hive spawns attacking in patrol, house of wolves you'd get wolf packs attacking etc.
What you're really getting here is Rise of Iron with some extra back content if you're bored but don't think you're getting a huge amount of content like you would with a normal game of the year edition where there's tons of gameplay time in the DLC. It's frustrating as Vault of Glass and King's Fall are fantastic gameplay experiences and it seems completely crazy not to bring them forward with Rise of Iron to give people a much wider choice of activities.

anyone know what the vanilla experience is like these days ? google says it's basically a contentless wasteland, but i'd at least like to pick up an used copy for a fiver to try the game and play through the first campaign before buying the full package which i can't return/resell if i don't like it (DLC ftw). will there be peopleplaying the campaign, and if not do you need them around ?

theres a lot of people playing this game at all time and at all levels, I started a new char and replayed all the first games few weeks back, still brilliant. when I was trying to download the dlc that came out recently I was put in place 284000 to wait for the download.. so there no shortage of players at any one time. Its a truly awesome game, highly recommend.

It's not to bad for the base game. You get the base story which is not all that good. You have the base map packs and game modes which are ok and plenty of people to play against. Base Strikes and raids as well. It's decent if you can get it for around £5. Easily find 15 hours of content in the base game. Also max rank in base game is 38. So you can't use exotic weapons I believe.
But the 4 DLC packs do add a lot more to the game.

Honestly, if you're interested in this game I'd just go ahead and buy the collection. You won't be able to access all the good stuff; including exotic weapons as your level cap won't allow you to equip them.
EDIT: Heat added, shame the price isn't the same for the Xbox.

Some of us paid £25 just for the new DLC....

30 Sep 16#11
Think about the poor people who paid £40 for the base game (which was very empty at launch). Then £25 for the season pass. Only to find out the 3rd DLC pack was not apart of the season pass so that was another £25. Then £25 for the latest taken king.
£35 still a decent price. Considering you also get a level 40 booster out of it which costs £25 alone on the PSN store.

I know that the DLC is overpriced for Destiny veterans, I'm happy that I got it for £35 (still a bargain). It's just that it dropped £6 before I've even got it, and every penny helps right?

I paid £49.99 then £35, then bought taken king for £40 and got it refunded, I played 1800hrs so I got my monies worth, but a lot of the play time was grinding for stuff.

They are available, but earlier raids would be pointless in terms of gear. There are 4 strike playlists dependant on light level. I paid full price for this content as it was released on Xbox One and PS4 and still feel it was value for money.
Destiny has easily become my favourite game of all time.

As a long time Destiny player, you are wrong. It was around £40 at launch (depending on where you buy games from), £35 for the season pass. The Taken King was then £40 and the new one £25.. Oh, I guess I proved your point more. Say £140 I've paid for what is in the package. Not worth it if I'm honest but at this price it is fantastic, just hope you lot are into grinding for hours on end

Great price. I cannot believe they are charging £24.99 for the Rise of Iron DLC, complete rip off, deffo not paying that. Especially as its getting mediocre reviews.

Rise of the Iron is worth it in my opinion. I only paid £19 for the upgrade from Taken King on XO. The main story is short but the plaguelands are the first patrol missions i have enjoyed without it feeling like a grind.
All in all this collection is the most value you will get for money over any game. I still play Borderlands 2 and it has been 4 years since that released but it doesn't have the offerings that this does.

Destiny is different though - if you played from vanilla, you'd have got far more content than this collection offers because of the way Bungie pretty much invalidate each previous piece of content when they release a new one. In particular you don't get to play Vault of Glass properly nor enjoy all the superb Y1 weapons either which are either no longer usable because they didn't get upgraded, they got nerfed (RIP Vex Mythoclast) their class got heavily nerfed (RIP Fatebringer). You also don't get the activities associated with each DLC either, stuff like the Hive Knight spawns and the wolf pack spawns on patrol stopped when their DLC finished. I bought the content as I went along but I've had over 1500 hours out of it so although I've complained about the price, it's not bad value for money particularly compared to games I've paid £40 and got little playtime from.
That said, I haven't bought Rise of Iron as I don't think it's worth getting back into Destiny for such pitifully short content and there's nothing coming for almost a year now aside from some micro events. I'm not at all envious of people getting this collection for less than I paid as they're not getting much for it and have missed out on the best of Destiny.

I'll always defend this game. I played vanilla and got bored. I repurchased on PS4 last xmas and joined the psn communities to link me to players. It's a GREAT social game. If you're playing it alone, you're missing out. It's definitely made to team up on. Plenty of nice players out there!

Johnmcl7 to Mike7343
1 Oct 16#31
It includes Rise of Iron - this is the base game and all the DLC (the Dark Beyond, House of Wolves, The Taken King and Rise of Iron). The older content is pretty much worthless now hence the low price for all the previous content.

Sony and Activision have an exclusive agreement which has meant the PS4 has received content ahead of the Xbox One, it could be due to that.

There is a lot of speculation that the next free update will be for all the old raids. Halloween event this month and SRL (sparrow racing) in December. All free so not too bad. They actually updated a lot of the old strikes for rise of iron to the new light level too..
Johnmcl7
2 Oct 16#40
It may still be there but much of it is useless - none of the Y1 legendaries can be upgraded to be usable for anything Y2 onwards and while some weapons were eventually carried forward (had to be unlocked again) none of the great weapons were. Similarly while the older raids and PoE are still there, most of their rewards are now useless and few people will play them never mind sherpa new players through them.
John
Johnmcl7
2 Oct 16#41
That's been speculation for the previous DLCs and updates as well to get the updated raids but it didn't happen, I'm still hoping it will but it's far from certain. Festival of the Lost is fine for a brief diversion but it doesn't really add any content aside from trying to get the masks, similarly while I thought SRL was exceptionally well designed and a lot of fun just two tracks gets boring quick - I'd love to see more tracks but that seems dubious.
All that aside, it's a reasonable price but I feel people should be aware that it's nothing like the bargain it seems to be due to the way Bungie handle old content.

Yeah I know what you mean. They missed a big opportunity by not doing the raids each time a new expansion came out. I was reading an interview the other week and one of the devs (can't remember which) said the reason that they haven't yet is because if they have the man power they will always try to make new content but because everyone is now working on destiny 2 it's the perfect chance for the small live team to update the raids as it will be a lot of content for a small amount of work. He stopped short of saying they definitely were but added that they know people have wanted them to for ages. The raid from rise of iron was cut from the vanilla game (or HOW) and then updated (quite a lot) for rise of iron. The small live team did all of rise of iron so they must have had some bits done already. We'll have to wait and see but by the time they do, destiny 2 will be close and they're hinting that progression will not carry over because they want it to be a different game (or a proper sequel as they put it). Better give me something good for the hours I've put in lol.

Is this anything like the halo series and is it worth getting for single player? Thanks
Johnmcl7 to RJ1
2 Oct 16#48
The basic combat is very similar to Halo and many of the enemies have a similar feel (it's meant to be an all new engine but there's a lot that feels copied straight over from Halo) although the overall game is quite different as it's got an rpg side to it that Halo doesn't so it's less focused on great story missions and more on repeating group activities.
I personally don't think it's worth it as a single player game as it really works well when playing with others (there's no matchmaking for endgame activities so you have to find people to play with), there are resources out there to help you find people to play with if you don't have friends that play the game.

I don't think that's necessarily true.. y1 items are still valid for new starters, albeit maybe not for very long. and if you take a look on bungie forums (in recruitment section, their forums are terrible btw) you can still find multiple fireteams looking for people to run crota/vault of glass etc... admittedly people do these things more for the fun and novelty now rather than them being to progress or get decent gear.
