Me too. Spare new dell 3330 still in the attic.

Do you have any paper feed problems with that printer? Mine keeps picking up 2 papers at a time. Tried all sorts of different paper types/thickness settings.

got same one delivered today for the in-laws, took ten mins to set up, real easy to do, bulkier than my Samsung but this has a paper tray and double sided printing which mine lacks. only done a few test prints to test different devices, but didn't run into any issues. seems a very good printer for the money. hot.

No No No must not buy myself another laser printer! Have a colour one I bought a couple of years ago and it still hasn't run out - looks excellent value, and if mine was anything to go by, has perfectly respectable build quality.

Thinking of buying a printer for uni, because printing prices are a bit ridiculous, just thinking whether I should go for this, or whether I will need colour options as well.
ukting to iEimis
8 Sep 16 #29
tbh, unless you do art or some form of media/graphics work you will never really find the need, and even if you would then 1 or 2 trips to a print shop a year won't hurt. Colour is pretty much a novelty that is generally not utilised, so black is the way to go IMO.

all of the "e" dells are rebranded brother printers.

all dell printers have been discontinued.
biglugs1
10 Sep 16 #30
I disagree. I have a dell colour laser and me and my wife use it all the time, for personal and work. You can print copies of reports and PowerPoint presentations in full colour, and it's really useful for colour photocopies. B&W will be ok for a lot of students, but colour is good.
I've just bought junior a Dell c176nw laser from Ebuyer - costs £110 new, but replacement toners are really cheap.
ukting
10 Sep 16 1 #31
but it begs the question whether those powerpoints "need" to be in colour. 99% of the time they dont. Being "good" doesn't warrant the cost for colour for the average person.
mspen
10 Sep 16 #32
if it's a rebranded brother...can you use the hl-L2360dn toner in this? they're cheaper than the dell ones.

i looked into it and there is some mechanic included to prevent that from being done. I'm sure someone knows how to modify it to work in the dell.

Does the Ricoh have auto-duplex?
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #42
Thats a plus for the dell. But I hear that Ricoh has a manual option. I'm guessing that means it will ask you to insert the printed pages back in and it takes care of the rest. so its like semi duplex?

At the moment this is 2x the cost of ricoh. I'm trying to decide between the two printers. I think getting cheap ink to work with Ricoh is cheaper?

What are your thoughts, is it that much more effort to manual double side print? lower dpi and twice the cost worth it?
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #43
dell
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=210-AEHL&redirect=1
says upto 2400x600

ricoh
http://www.ricoh.co.uk/products/printers/black-white/sp-213w.aspx?view=specification
says 600x600
then underneath it says 1200x600

Does that mean dell is 600x600 but also can do 2400x600 dpi?
so dell is better? for dpi?
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #44
"It can do double sided but it's a manual operation involving the bypass tray."
it takes more effort but its half the price?
Sanchit
29 Sep 16 1 #45
It has the 1200DPI HQ printing option.
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #46
thanks, do you know this because you have one?
I think I will buy the Ricoh, half the price, worse build quality but I can source cheap refils
Sanchit
29 Sep 16 1 #47
Indeed, I bought this when the price was £36. Great printer IMO! Went for this over the Ricoh for the auto duplex (unbelievably useful!) and the brand
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #48
lmao now you got me thinking, dell is now at £40 and Ricoh at £21
if you can choose again what would you buy?
thanks
also how cheap are refills?
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #49
im ordering in a few hours, I think the Ricoh is the winner for price/performance and the refils is no competition, you can get cheap toners from china for ricoh, havent found any for Dell
also I believe Ricoh is designed to actually refil whereas the dell you supposed to actually get a new part.
I'll have to manualy do the duplexing but not much more effort for alot cheaper to maintain system?
3guesses to Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #50
Really depends how much double-sided printing you expect to do. If you cock it up doing it manually it's really rather a false economy, so I would go with auto-duplex every time personally.
Enterpart
29 Sep 16 #51
agreed, but seriously I've managed to source 1kg toner for £20 ish. its not original, but its meant for the Ricoh. I'll first buy a smaller size to test the seller, but according to this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161506476336?clk_rvr_id=1102233097810&rmvSB=true
thats 160 grams for 2600 pages
so 1000g will get you 16250 pages
if that works out I can source 2kg for about £32...work the maths out.

Also I think theres a chip that gives you about 5000 prints maybe.
I can source the chips for about a pound. So yeah if I get the printer £21
ink £25 and say 10 chips for another £10
I wont need to buy ink for a long time. thats a total £56
thats £16 more than dell which only has 700 sheets (compared to around 16000)

Had a look at dell, I got 2 toners for £20 ish
each toners meant to get you 1600 pages...

I'll have to master feeding in the paper, but even if I make a balls of it a few times I still think im laughing.
I'm going to just look around for reviews on the maunal duplex, but Im pretty set on buying the Ricoh, I've spent all day researching this, even mae a spreadsheet to compare the to lol didnt save it though doh

thanks everyone for their advise, they always say buy the printer that has the cheapest ink...also almost everyone here in hukd are raving about it

30 Sep 16 #52
Jesus, what are you planning on printing - copies of War and Peace?

If you are doing that much printing, I think you will REALLY regret not going for an auto-duplex printer...
Enterpart
30 Sep 16 #53
LOL
I actually dont know how much printing I will do to be honest, I just wanted to be sure that if I wanted to, I could get cheap ink.
I would buy the Dell if not for the higher price.
anyway like I said at the price I can get the ink (if the seller is legit) I probably dont even need to print duplex and still comes out cheaper...
I really cant be arsed sourcing cheap ink for the dell now, spent a whole day looking at Ricoh :disappointed:

whats the cheapest ink you got for the dell?
I think I will sleep on it and buy it tommorow

Dell toners were around £20 on ebay IIRC. I'd still go for the Dell for duplex and probably more reliable wifi, lol
Enterpart
1 Oct 16 1 #56
Got the Ricoh, it came down to cost, I was scared to paying more since I dont even know if Im going to print.
I think I found a way to disable chip, will report back once I get it. but potentially I can just keep refilling. and I can source roller drums once the drum wears of after 3 cycles ish.

I can get ink (full 2600 pages worth) for less than £2, even cheaper if I want to buy 2kg worth

I think the wifi issue is overblown, mostly from inpatient, tech illiterate users. I've read enough to know the pitfalls and would be able to bypass most problems. I'm happy with choice, I even checked how manual duplex works and its not that bad. anyway first laser printer, im excited

Have a look at this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCLBJXtYpeY

shes been refilling since 2011 !
$50 for 3 years, 17k prints, only done refills.

Goes to show how much we have been overspending.

I heard only samsung and brother have an easy accesible way to pour refills in. others like the Dell E310dw, you have to actually create a whole yourself!
This video (I had a better one but cant find it)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbySy3LihYY
shows you the process for the dell.

The kits you can buy.
check something like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toner-REFILL-KIT-for-Dell-E310dw-E514dw-E515dw-E515dn-STARTER-CARTRIDGE-/321883074980

the cheapest I found but you have to ask for postage, maybe around £10 ish.
Which works out close to £20. It will take more time to get it done the first time but after that it should be easy.
Then find a suplier for compatible toner for your model. No reason why you cant get it cheap as £5 each time you want to refil it.

I was thinking of going down that path, but that extra £19+£20
and even then I'mnot sure if the dell parts are build to last, whereas the Brother parts are engineried to last longer since they are kinda designed to refil. and I also found lots of instructional videos on replacing the drum when the time comes and source it from China.

So you can see learning to refil is worth it and will save you down the line. If I knew I would new auto duplex and had more capotal I would have gone for dell but we'll see how difficult the Ricoh is.

I'll let you know how it goes.
