I'd rather pay this price, than £400. £400 is a bit too much for a clothes hanger.

In my experience cheap fitness equipment is a waste of money. It will be light ,unstable, poorly constructed and awkward and uncomfortable to use. It will either develop a fault or you will get frustrated with it and give up using it.
I'm afraid a decent cross trainer that will stand the test of time will set you back at least £400 to £500.

I agree with the first part of your comment, but you don't have to buy a decent cross trainer brand new. Auction sites are rife with barely used treadmills, cross-trainers, rowing machines from top-end manufacturers such as Life Fitness, Reebok etc sold by folks who had bought them on a whim/ new year resolution etc for a fraction of the price of the brand new product.
I recently purchased a Life Fitness treadmill with 250km on the clock for £700. Brand new price a year ago - over £3500. Had to hire a transit and take two of my friends to bring it back, but it's so worth it.

I bought one of these to help me recover from an ankle operation. I was dubious but it was fantastic. I lost weight and gained fitness and mobility - seriously!
My only observation is that I wore out the bearing in about 6 months. But it was £25 well spent and now I am getting it collected for a refund. How can that be bad?
Also, I would suggest looking on the usual fleabay sites as there are some amazing bargains to be had.

Heat added for price - but question for anyone with a bit of knowledge about fitness equipment - would this be any good? as seems too cheap and stride length looks small compared to expensive machines.
Also site seems to be down for maintenance.

If it doesn't have a flywheel, avoid. The decathlon ones are better although pricey. Personall I have the Domyos VE730. Try it instore to get a feel for these as most feel different stridewise and flywheel natural movement etc.
*edit: seems the VE730 is out of stock and replaced by the shape version http://www.decathlon.co.uk/shape-cross-trainer-id_8349405.html

This will probably be quite unpleasant to use at this price point and the weakest link on these budget trainers are the welds on the frame that take all the stressing especially the floor standing 'H' section with the uprights.
Those welds will crack over time depending on how vigorous you work out on it, Chinese monkey metal.

Yes good point. Second hand is a good option if you can find quality, though I wouldn't put Reebok in that bracket.

64 quid delivered direct from Amazon. Worth 4 quid extra for Amazon's amazing CS if it's rubbish?
