Cities: Skylines is a modern take on the classic city simulation. The game introduces new game play elements to realize the thrill and hardships of creating and maintaining a real city whilst expanding on some well-established tropes of the city building experience.
From the makers of the Cities in Motion franchise, the game boasts a fully realized transport system. It also includes the ability to mod the game to suit your play style as a fine counter balance to the layered and challenging simulation. You’re only limited by your imagination, so take control and reach for the sky!

How essential is it? Bought the base game for ~£10 but never really played, should've waited really but I'd like to play it sometime soon.

Wanted to check this out, for £7.50 (Deluxe Edition) I couldn't pass on the opportunity. Nice find OP, heat added!

Got this back in the 49p hearthstone exploit, easily worth £5.74 though if you like the old Sim Citys, heat

Deluxe - can anyone who has played it shed some light on if the "five in game items" (Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Brandenburg Gate, Arc de Triomphe, Grand central terminal) are important/fun/worth the extra.

Well they added the day/night cycle for free alongside the DLC so you don't need to pay to get that. Same goes for the snow one.

do you really need those specs or is it likely to work on a poor PC too ? like an i3...

Minimum specs are a Core2Duo at 3GHz, so even a first generation i3 will run it without issue. If you're skirting the minimum on RAM, you may find it slowing down with bigger cities.

An i3 is the least powerful Intel Core CPU of it's generation. You need to be aware of what generation it is since an i3 Skylake is going to be more powerful than an i3 Ivy Bridge

From what I can gather, the additional extras in Deluxe are five real world city monuments/buildings - not the After Dark and Snow DLCs. However, the basic game does now look like it has a day/night cycle (separate to After Dark).
The DLC isn't bundled. The snow and day/night cycles were added with updates to the main game, but there are extra parts which are part of the DLC that cost extra

You don't need to buy the deluxe. The day/night cycle (and I believe the snow weather) are part of the base game via patches since the respective DLCs were released. The DLCs themselves give extra fluff around those two themes, as far as I am aware. The deluxe edition is just the base game with some extras, it does not include the extras from the DLCs.

I remember getting this for free. There was a hearthstone deal a year back that when adding hearthstone decks to checkout this game would appear as "you may also like this."
It was priced at £0.00, tried it once with the new steam controller, didn't get Fintona the controller. I've not tried the game since. :/
