Not sure if this is in the right section but from 21st of September click and collect at Tesco direct is now free regardless of what amount you spend . Not sure when this promotion finishes but thought it might help some of you save money . It's my first "deal" so please be nice

Yes & why not? It's not a free service as they would like you to hear as there are hidden costs that customers never hear of but this is grocery shopping that will have perishable goods which is quite diff to buying home furnishings.

They should have kept free it in the first place. Asda George always had free collection to store and that's why I go back. It was silly to have the minimum spend since many of their items are priced below it and these won't sell well if people always think of the add on price to get it to store. It also dilutes the sell price for these items since they would think of lowering the price for already low price items which don't sell well and I'm sure many people would tag on another item they don't want just to meet the minimum spend and simply reject or return the item afterwards. Increased returns with not many choosing to pay the collection charge is not good...get rid of the min spend.

Good news - presumably the charge they introduced lost them more money than it brought in.
John Lewis is another one that got greedy, and we've bought virtually nothing from it since it brought the new charge in. Maybe they'll go the same way after their latest poor results.

Awsome, Stopped using their Click and Collect service completely when they introduced the ridiculous charges. I mean you pay in petrol and time to go to their shops and then they have the cheek to charge you on top again. Typical Tesco. Wonder how many customers they will have lost for good with this one. I might use them again but its a 4 mile drive.

Got to love these companies who introduce something which is only there due to pure greed on thier part, has a negative impact on their Customers and their Customers didn’t request. Then they introduce the "removal" of it for a period of time and imply they are doing their Customers a huge favour! I am struggling to see a deal in this scenario as they are just giving back what they took away. I for one haven’t bought anything from Tesco Click and Collect since the charge was introduced either.

I am very happy the charge has been abolished, but I wonder if you have got your own business, or ever worked for yourself ?
People don't work for nothing (except in charity shops, but that's a different argument) so if it takes extra manpower to handle the click and collect items, then why is it 'pure greed' to try and charge for that extra cost ?
I am certainly no fan of supermarkets and the way they try to control their suppliers (many small fruit and veg growers have been bankrupted by supermarkets' tactics) but it obviously costs some extra money to handle C&C items no matter how small, so they thought it would be good to charge - after all, they are a business not a charity.
The fact they are reversing that decision is brilliant news and shows they must have suffered financially, but the cost will have to come from somewhere, either wages or investment perhaps. Please don't anyone say the cost can come from profits - every business has to make a profit or it will cease to exist and then people lose their jobs.

20 Sep 162#30
I think the problem was that many C&C orders had to be despatched via courier, and even for Tesco it's going to cost a high percentage of the mark-up on the goods to cover the courier fee. Great to see they've backtracked and fingers crossed it's a permanent thing
davej1710
20 Sep 163#31
We got free delivery originally and eventually didn't show we appreciate it by buying more to cover costs. Tesco is a business so needs to do things for a profit making reason, and so started to charge in certain cases. Realising it lost business, now changes back to free and everyone notices and appreciates it (Tesco seeming to have been humbled in back tracking), so the floodgates of orders are now open. New "free" cost for will be paid via increase in specific goods prices to compensate which hopefully will be unnoticed. All clever mind games from tesco (and other retailers) to get you to spend but make you think you won the battle.
sim0708
20 Sep 16#33
It's a permanent change, original charge was introduced due to yodel charges but obviously realised now that the lost business costs more than what they pay out for deliveries
Kyouken
20 Sep 162#34
I found 30 just a bit too much when I need the odd thing and trying to find something extra that i wanted difficult when I am not wanting to spend money unnecessarily. they should have set it to 20 at the time which is far more manageable to get to.
free is obviously much better for us. yay.

20 Sep 161#36
All good points. Yes I have my own business and yes I work for myself. As such I would question why the charge wasn’t introduced into the business model from conception. In such a competitive market or any market it's not good business practice to alienate your Customers by backtracking subsequently causing a negative backlash and unfavourable press headlines. I also question why charge for delivering to a place where your own vehicles are already delivering too on a daily basis is required? Finally yes I also know how much Tesco's operating costs are, I am a Tesco shareholder too unfortunately. I suspect if they hadn't acquired a £17.5bn debt hangover from their irresponsible rampant boom-time expansion they could have absorbed the costs of Click and Collect hence my greed comment.

20 Sep 162#37
How is this hot? Asda and many other retailers have always done free C&C without min spend! Also, many small businesses do free HOME delivery on eBay and Amazon. So they can afford it but Tesco can't..

davej1710
20 Sep 162#49
Agreed, could have set the delivery benchmark much lower, however I think £30 was cleverly set as being overpriced by Tesco for a reason. To make us take notice that it used to be free and appreciate it more. Now they are perceived to have back tracked (so we give brownie point to Tesco for being "humbled" when they knew what they were doing) and us customers perceive we've won, their profits will increase and so does our appreciation of the free delivery. Mind games, very clever, well played Tesco.

They probably looked at people buying stuff to hit the £30 threshhold and the returns (of the item that was bought to push it over) relating to these orders - and this actually costs more in transport, restocking etc

I like it! Didn't know Waitrose took returns like that.

Why should the staff get paid extra to handle click and collect? I assume the staff are getting paid an hourly rate to do whatever work is required in the store, whether it's working checkouts, customer services, restocking shelves, or indeed handling click and collect.

winstonmanc
20 Sep 16#75
There is the complication that the reason they do click and collect is that they don't want to spend money on large warehousing space in every store, or of course the stock value sitting doing nothing in each store if local customers do not want the items. They want the efficiency of having large distribution warehouses to hold the less frequently sold goods but also need to allow the customers to purchase from those warehouses. If they want to compete with other companies that allow people to order and collect locally for free, then they have to absorb the delivery to store costs by including it in their pricing.

Argos is completely different though. It is not nationwide as certain items can not be collected at certain stores. Tesco direct is nationwide if it's available on the site you can click and collect from any of their click and collect stores. So Argos have a restriction to what is available locally. Which means Tesco clearly could be going out of their way to deliver a said item. As said above many are through courier. But nonetheless Tesco make a mint so they don't need to charge. Greed is what causes these charges with large firms.

20 Sep 161#111
Good decision by Tesco, it has certainly stopped me from ordering small items (on impulse) from them since the charge came in. I can understand if they can't always offer a next day service on some items if they are coming from a remote distribution centre to the store but it should be free - its not like they have to deliver to your home! Sainsburys have/had a £4 charge under £40 which just meant they lost business.
For those who mention that it still costs money to send small items to stores - think of it as a way to get people in. If you are going into the store to collect something, you are more likely to pick up a few other bits and bobs.

I am surprised at the amount of sympathy generated for Tesco. This company has money to burn and the cost of a free click and collect service is not even going to touch the surface. You might have seen in the News that Sports Direct paid out 200 million in bonuses in the last 5 years an they are no where near Tesco in terms of its Global Market stake and profitability. I am sure delivery costs are factored in and maybe its as so many suggest "they just got greedy".

They can just chuck whatever it is in with their round-the-clock deliveries that are required to keep the shelves stacked... If a retailer charges for collection at their own store I simply buy elsewhere as it's farcical!

I used to buy quite a lot with free click and collect, but stopped since the charge was introduced. The stuff was always couriered to the local store, and not delivered on Tesco trucks. I am fairly sure it was Yodel as you could track the items on their website. So Tesco must have had some costs associated with this, but have now seen how much business they have lost.

Good news. If Tesco are struggling to make an online buck through discouraging the bargain hunters wanting their 50p bargains delivered to store for free, they must be doing really badly.
Like others I simply stopped ordering once the charge was introduced.

Great news, I use to order items on weekly basis before they start charging money for CC, I have Tesco express near my house which stays open till 11pm, so it's great for people like me who get home late.

It's their choice how to distribute it. They have to stock it somewhere just like everything.
The point is, not having to pay to collect stuff from a store is NOT a hot deal, it's just how it should be.
It's like, Having to pay to collect = freezing cold.
Not having to pay to collect = neutral. 0 degrees.

They had a light bulb moment and realised no one used Tesco Direct any more since charging?! I used to buy loads from them, but barely anything since the charge. Same goes for John Lewis - haven't ordered anything from them since they charged.

I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday. I shopped quite alot from Tesco Direct, especially things for my children, due to being the best price found but stopped alot of purchases as even though £2 may have seemed minimal, it would escalate the price over other sellers. I do like Tesco Direct and would always check the website when looking to buy something, and the people who work at my nearest Tescos click and collect are so nice and friendly

Great!
I used to order from Direct/F&F clothing quite a lot, but stopped once the charge was brought in. Got to a point where i didn't even need to say my name at the collection point lol!
Happy the cost has been ditched. Now they need to move F&F Clothing back to a separate website!

Yes, thanks for info; I also had a big drop in buying from tesco when the collection charge was introduced, but I made a point in letting tesco know through feedback I would not buy items and be expected to pay for the privilege of collecting said items from their store; I can see a lot of like minded people made the effort also.
Onward to the Xmas 99p bargains with no CC at tesco; Now I'm dreaming.

Well spotted. I will start to buy from them again. They have obviously lost sales since they introduced their silly charge. Tesco have seen the light!

23 Sep 16#172
Yes agree with many here, it should never have changed.
Clothes retailers often have a minimum value for free home delivery, but to store is free. In any case if you have free returns it makes a nonsense of it... You order what you want plus anything else to make up the order value to get free delivery, then you send back (free) what you over-ordered.
Tesco have realised their online direct sales have dropped massively because they sell a large number of low value items online... So with the charge people just went elsewhere, so they have not increased turnover or profits, they've actually lost.
In fact in most cases the cost of delivery to store for Tesco is almost zero... This is because their lorries are already delivering daily food and produce, so to put something else on the lorry is easy. It costs in some admin/picking only. Offset that against the increase in sales from ease of ordering and its a no-brainer. So on a low value item they may lose, but over a spread of items they win anyway because the psychological barrier to ordering has been removed.

There's been plenty of sale bits that I haven't bothered with since they brought in the charge.

Never quite understood why you have to pay to collect your item...
snatch_master
5 Oct 16#195
I've never understood why Tesco Direct can't communicate with Tesco Stores and use the on-shelf stock to fulfil direct orders for immediate collection. They are so out of tune the prices wildly vary on the same product. For example I can buy an item of Lego off the shelf for £20, or I can order it from TD for £19 and collect it from the same store. I save £1 and Tesco have to pay to process the order and shipping to store, and sorting at both ends. Then we pay the price in reduced clubcard benefits and increased costs.

This one was counted as a deal , I just hope people come to this area
-not really polish, just notice they wear a lot of tapout stuff
op great deal!
I stopped going to my express lol
John Lewis is another one that got greedy, and we've bought virtually nothing from it since it brought the new charge in. Maybe they'll go the same way after their latest poor results.
Please don't anyone say the cost can come from profits - every business has to make a profit or it will cease to exist and then people lose their jobs.
free is obviously much better for us. yay.
But John Lewis have a superb return system. Argos and Debenhams are decent in this respect too
Just greedy to charge when they benefit anyway from passing trade of people visiting a tescos they otherwise would not.
sO ADD IT TO THE
So just make the order up to £30 and take stuff back - so it ends up actually costing John Lewis even more!
I'll remember that - makes up for the charge and the added bonus with JL these days of lousy customer service. No wonder their profits have dropped.
to the board for an extra holiday or five in Barbados.
If they introduced a tipping system where you would pay the member of staff who served you,
than I'm sure most would be happily contribute something.
Used to use Tesco C&C a lot. Since they brought in the charge haven't used them at all. They must have lost loads of custom. Stupid & greedy.
Victory for people power !!
I'm another fan for saying the £2 delivery charge was alot, should have said something like spend over £10 to get free delivery
It's not like they need use an external courier or anything.
I agree - stopped buying from them since the charge.
Ditto with John Lewis - stopped buying from them too....or buy to make up £30 and refund the extra items when I collect.
Cummon John Lewis follow suit!
Weird how dropping a rip off collection has made them popular on this site Deal of the day, heading towards 2000 degrees. The likes of Asda Wilko & Argos never charge, but don't make deal of the day because of it.
Good thing they came to their senses, orders probably dropped dramatically. They need all the help they can get with Aldi and Lidl killing them.
For those who mention that it still costs money to send small items to stores - think of it as a way to get people in. If you are going into the store to collect something, you are more likely to pick up a few other bits and bobs.
They must've lost a lot of associated sales.
I likened it to being a loss leader for them.
I do not care how much it costs Tesco to send something up from the depot. I did not want to pay the charge and it seems neither did others.
Like others I simply stopped ordering once the charge was introduced.
