It's still on this evening at Spar Heskin Lancashire. But Im suspecting is store specific with the shop being a new conversion to Spar...as an opening offer.

Actually you're right - 5.7g (Branston) vs 5.0g (Heinz) sugar per 100g. Branston definitely have a more savoury, thicker flavour though, whereas the Heinz sauce tastes watery and sweet.

Deal still going this evening at stated shop, so it's beans with everything for a while yet here... anyone found them at their local spar to confirm not store specific?

Nicer than Heinz, too much sauce in Heinz.
dunno

This is false. Branston beans are higher in sugar than Heinz.

Lidl's beans have improved massively recently. The older Campo Largo tins (green and orange) were too watery and sugary. Their Newgate tins (red) taste similar to Branston in my opinion.

These are way better than Heinz, thicker sauce and way less sugar.

Cheers folks, Heinz and Branston it is. I'll get a blind taste test set up with the missus and go from there.

I've never eaten beans (put off by the texture, bit like sweetcorn I thought) but recently had a full English somewhere and I thought they were quite nice (soft and didn't need any chewing)..
Can a beans expert recommend a brand for a beginner like me that I'll like? :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm not sure what defines a beans expert.. But as I have at least 6+ tins a week I'll give it a go.
Personally I prefer the branded beans.
I'd give both Heinz and Branston a try.
Branston are my favourite after being a loyal Heinz fan for many years.
I'd say cooked in a saucepan is best, but they are perfectly fine in the microwave.
I'd not really recommend on their own so I'd do either toast or bacon etc. They're also nice with chips. :smirk:

Heinz & Branston are always good quality. The cheaper non brands from the likes of Asda, Tesco, Lidl etc are not unappetising but generally inferior in tems of size of beans and thickness/ flavour of the sauce. But not so bad you wouldn't want to eat them.
Honourable mention to...(which is a really rather tasty, superior, healthy even, tin of beans):

I'd only eat cold if I was desperate. That's coming from a beans fan. I'd not recommend that to someone just starting out on a bean journey personally.

As said, I bought more today and the stack was still high of £1 marked packs. Looks like got more legs at this particular store which is the newly converted Spar ( from Nisa) in Heskin Chorley.

Agree. Always used to buy Heinz, like the taste but now a third of the can is sauce.

Cross and Blackwell have been fond of artificial flavourings and sweeteners.

Agree 100% with debs8z...I bought the Heinz the other day but it was too runny and the beans tasted different, nothing can beat branston IMO

I find that somewhat ironic seeing as tomatoes have elevated amounts of glutamate.

There's some brands out there using MSG and artificial sweeteners, they must be the worst, unless that's more your thing.
