I'm almost certain that it's the latter, as with the updated version of Titan Quest, for example.

If previously downloaded into your Library, Steam will update all the necessary HD files on your computer before running. So, if Bioshock 1 and 2 (+ Minerva's Den) are not already set to automatically update, when you press play all new files will be downloaded first.

You just need to have them in your library. The remastered versions will be added as separate listings in your library.
That's incorrect - according to the official details the remastered versions will be separate items in your Steam library - so you'll own 'BioShock' and 'BioShock Remastered' and be able to install/play one without the other. It's not an update/patch; it's a whole new game that you get for free if you own the original.
I don't think it will work like that. If it was just an HD texture pack it would probably get added to the game as free DLC rather than a whole separate library listing (like Skyrim and others). But I think what they've done is ported it to a later version of the Unreal Engine (possibly UE3, as used in Infinite, which would explain why that isn't getting a PC remaster), so most files will be different. Would be cool if it worked like that - so the remastered version would download all files except the old textures - but I haven't seen that happen before. Guess we'll find out at midnight!

I thought I was just remembering the original as looking better than it was but a) the original still looks great, really holds up, and b) comparison videos haven't convinced me there's much difference. Still, the remasters are free and it will be a great excuse to replay them!

I was struggling to see any real differences in the video showcase they uploaded not long ago.
This gen will be remembered as the remaster generation.

There is a digital foundry vid comparing the two version and in alot of cases the old version looks better ie the water fx.

Separate on Steam but game file wise I don't imagine it makes sense to have the entire game downloaded twice. It'll likely just download the HD files etc and list the game in Steam as another entry.

Thanks, already had BioShock Infinite from a Firefly deal here long ago where it was basically free. Getting 1 and 2 for £6 is awesome, especially with Remastered coming out tonight! Cant Wait!

Not sure no but it makes sense to me. If they are just texture packs then maybe. Easiest way to check is install both versions and right click on both and check their locations.

They're not just texture packs.
Almost certainly the game installs will be entirely independent of each other.

Gah! Hadn't read the blurb. Seems a bit mad to have the options to install the original version and/or the new version. May be a legal matter of prior ownership where it would be considered theft for them to steal the original from you in return for a brand new reworking of the original (even if one never actually owns software, just the entitlement to use it under license. I can well imagine some American's creating a Class Action suit to receive millions of $$$ in compensation for psychological trauma caused by the loss of code they paid to use simply because they can. On the other hand the blurb you've pasted could be applicable to the US only (hence the day earlier release date). Whichever it is I, along, I suspect, with the majority, will only install the new HD version.

It would take a VERY brave developer/publisher to forcibly remove the old versions, the backlash would be extreme. You can easily hide them if you don't want two versions to appear in your library. Skyrim will be exactly the same.

Nah, I wouldn't say that it's "mad" at all, really - I can still see there being a reasonably sizeable group of people who'd want to play the original releases even if they're in the minority. While not widely played now, the remastered Bioshock 2 has no multiplayer, for example, and these versions are also going to be more a fair amount more resource-intensive.
