I think these are a good choice for the price as they can run on triple a batteries and offer a decent amount of light particularly compared to the super cheap weak led lights that are often posted and even a lot better than the 60 quid Cateye I was using before. I'm not keen on these mounts but there's cheap alternative ones you can get that hold the lights well. In terms of power these are good for around town but if riding off road or out of town in darkness I'd recommend something that's xml2-t6 powered although these will need 18650 batteries.

I switch to high beam everytime some inconsiderate person has the brightest LED money could buy and it's not pointing down

Apart from the mount for the front light this looks good - I like how you back up the rechargable with batteries. You won't get it as bright with the aaa batteries but it is handy to have them in reserve.

That's what drew me into it too, and the bigger lumen amount. Also the rear leds are powered by AAA batts and not coin batts like this deal.

I know little about led torches though, maybe someone else has ideas on good bike light / torch combos between 8 and 12 quid?

While the cheap chinese lights work well, I'd recommend against using the supplied batteries as they usually offer poor performance and in some cases have caught fire or exploded.

I started with Q5 powered lights the same as these as they could be AAA powered:

I found them ok for around town but not powerful enough for off road so instead use Ultrafire 502B (or similar) which need an 18650 battery to run (don't work on AAA's):

There's a seller on ebay called Torchyboy I normally buy my 18650 batteries off, I have an Xtar and a Nitecore charger for them. AAA or 18650 I find it much handier being able to charge up batteries and then just swap over when the lights run out of power.

Just a note on Cree LEDs - these are rated similar to processors, there are different ranges and within those ranges different power levels which you can see here:

I believe the Q5 lights are XP-E2 Q5's, for a more powerful light there's usually a good selection of XML2-T6 powered lights - the older XML's are still around but they're not quite as power efficient.

I have these lights don't be put off by low lumen rating the rear light is as bright as more expensive ones.
The front is more of a flood beam again very bright, also i have THIS £3.99 one which i run off a usb power bank,which gives a brighter more focused beam with a longer run time.
