So I have a GTX 660 but the way I read this is that the improvement isn't absolutely massive..

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-970-vs-GeForce-GTX-660

..however I'm sure I'm reading that wrong, not least because I really don't understand NVIDIA's card numbering at all. Any help welcome.

I prefer to use anandtech for comparing this stuff instead of GPUboss.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1778?vs=1743 In those games you can see that the 970 is at least twice as fast. I'm sure this applies to many other games also.

I was running a comparison of my GTX680 vs the GTX970 - GPU boss recommends the 680...

I have this card, pretty much plays all current games in 1080p / 60hz at ultra.

Still don't think id buy it now as would go for 1060/1070, but still a good budget price now.

Getting a second today, anyone have experience of these in SLI? not sure what sort of performance to expect. I basically want to max everything at 1080p, my single one always involved tweaking, turning hairworks of in the witcher for example. Hoping 2 will solve that!
adam0812 to Deaa
28 Sep 16 1 #13
Why not sell your 970 and buy a 2nd hand 980ti? Similar cost and performance except none of the headaches of SLI.
washer010 to Deaa
28 Sep 16 1 #23
I had 970 sli, when a game is well optimized for sli you will get slightly more performance over a 980ti but some games don't support sli, its a pain disabling sli to play them. 980ti is a better all round solution but 970 sli still rocks most of the time.

Depends what you're using it for.

If you want it running VR or DX12 stuff, it's worth the extra cash. Or it certainly will be a little down the line. (At which point, it will probably also be cheaper I suppose!)
adam0812
28 Sep 16 #14
Game has terrible CPU optimisation at present. My 980ti wont go above 80% usage. If they can sort that wont have any trouble with 1080/60 ultra on a 970.

I have the 970 - it's pretty good overall, the main issue being, as is the case with the PC gaming scene, especially AAA - the software side is a pain in the ass still, and at times, one spends the first half hour or hour even, tweaking, to get decent performance in a game. It is down to the developer of course and some of the software houses are better at optimisation than others... you know this anyway. All I am saying is, don't expect miracles with the card. I paid £270 for mine, over a year ago, I think upon reflection, I probably should have waited a while and shaved £50 off at least, so this isn't a bad deal all things considered, but you might be better off waiting and see if the newer cards drop in price after Christmas... they are bound to I guess...

I'm at the stage now where I am thinking of not quitting PC gaming all together, but slamming the brakes on, it is way too expensive to keep up with. I kind of wish the technology side (hardware especially) would go into stasis for a decade, so we get the most out of what we have, rather than having to sell off parts, recycle them, or landfill them.

Bit off topic I suppose - this has been playing on my mind for a few months.

Back to Nintendo then :innocent:

I have a 970 and spend about zero seconds optimising games on average. It's two year old tech which plays everything at 1080p brilliantly. As for the rest of your comment about tech not moving forward you are living in denial.
Ellendel to Justme1969

I have a 970, and I haven't yet found a game it doesn't comfortably run on high or max settings at 1440p. It takes me a few seconds to go into the graphics settings, and increase the settings, or confirm that they are there are already set high!

Unless you are trying to game at 4k, graphics cards are delivering extremely high levels of performance for much longer now. 1080p PC gamers should be laughing.

ive had my 5770 since i bought it.

you dont need super expensive parts to enjoy a game.

tone down the graphic settings a but and even older graphics cards will still run games just fine.

on that note im also on a first gen i7 920

the laptop i plan on buying for my work will be more powerful than my 'gaming rig'
Deaa
28 Sep 16 #17
I did think about that but weren't sure if i'd get much for the 970. Id imagine I would be looking around £260 for the 2? Do 980ti's go for that?
donbarney
28 Sep 16 #18
yeh that might be it or it could be a sign of things to come, the game runs well enough on the 1060 and 480
adam0812
28 Sep 16 #19
Have a look on ebay, with a bit of luck you should be able to snag one for just under £300. I'd pay the slight premium if i was you and go for a single card solution. Unless a game have great scaling like overwatch the 980ti is going to give the same or better performance.

EDIT: Sorry didnt realise you'd already bought the second, dont worry too much then, performance will be good in most games. Stuff like tomb raider, overwatch and battlefield you will be looking at better than 980ti performance. I personally play a lot of indie games which dont have SLI.
Bobbite
28 Sep 16 2 #20
I have a 970, using a 1440p monitor, most games run amazing! Overwatch 60fps most of the time in high-very high, just struggled a bit on fallout 4 at this resolution.

Yer you're right it is quite peculiar. Especially the 480 smashing the 390. Fingers crossed they sort it, the game is fantastic save for these issues.

28 Sep 16 #22
I know but the only thing I can do is wait for the prices to drop as I save. Probably going to look into getting a water cooled one to be honest. I would love 2x GTX 970s in SLI but SLI is still pretty dodgy and after the r9 290 I'm looking for a more stable platform.

these people should be banned for causing a lot of confusion, they do not even do testing but only technical comparisons. The 970 is at least a good 25% better than the 680, I got some 670 in the draws which are aboutt 7-10% less, at the very most, than the 680

Thanks for the comment Bob. So in your opinion, for the cost, is it worth upgrading from a 680 to a 970? My CPU is a slightly old but still fairly meaty i7 3930k.

Gpu boss is the worst way of comparing anything, avoid it like the plague. The 970 is significantly faster than the 660, just google benchmarks of the games you play or plan to play and look for yourself.
Justme1969

Am I ... it was a pipe dream that we go into stasis.

We are developing hardware at such a rate that it is near impossible to keep up and fully utilise what we have before our set-up is deemed obsolete ... where is this going? No idea. The only denial at present, is the belief that this wanton materialism has a bright future.

Anyway, regarding the "no issue" gaming on PC at 60 fps / 1080 - fine. Obviously this depends on specific software builds & other hardware factors.

Perhaps I was being a little "gloomy" up there - I do tend to obsess with software & fiddle

It is a good card when all is well, but if I were looking to buy now, I'd wait and see what happens early next year.
Ellendel
28 Sep 16 1 #34
Agreed - I'm not sure I'd necessarily buy a 970 right now either. It's a good option in terms of performance for pound, but I'd definitely wait for a 1070 price drop, or something competitive from AMD if I was in the market.

Just surprised you seemed disappointed with it. Circa a couple of hundred quid, and it could probably last you for another couple of years on top of the two you've already had. No need to buy something new every generation. I regard mine as one of my best graphics card purchases. It was a monster, it still kicks fps, it's suitable for VR, and it overclocks nicely too - although I run mine cold due to having a tiny room (London problems) that doesn't need any help getting uncomfortably hot.

Not planning on moving mine on until the '1170' or AMD equivalent is out and has hit that magic £250 ish mark.
Justme1969
28 Sep 16 1 #35
Not disappointed, just reflecting really and throwing up a cautionary "wait" a couple of months and see.

For many people buying a new card is quite an investment and something that has to last a few years (hopefully).

It is an odd time of year to be purchasing hardware when the Xmas lunacy is about it hit.

Just my opinion of course. Each to their own.

I don't think I've ever been so blunt in a comment before, but... what absolute rubbish! New generations of 3D accelerators used to herald double the performance of their predecessors, and the cycle was much shorter, too - if you'd been gaming since 1995, you'd know that not only did we have to contend with a range of dozens of 3D cards supporting esoteric mixes of features and with custom APIs for each chip, but we also had the pressure of the short CPU and RAM upgrade cycles. Nowadays a decent CPU will last 6+ years, we have more and more time between each GPU generation, and they don't feature nearly as many groundbreaking new features or speeds. The VRAM throttle has never been looser, and never allowed so much time between required "doublings". The 970 has been out since 2014 - it's over two years old, and still not seriously outclassed or outdated. People with a 970 probably won't need to upgrade to a 1070, they can hold out for the 1170 or whatever (although I suppose now is the time to up those clocks a little!).

We're living in a golden age of kickass hardware and cheap games, and from a gaming platform perspective, the PC has never been further ahead of its peers.

£270 is a lot for a 970, though! You could sell the games with them back in 2014 and end up with a card for ~£200. Its low price was a driving factor for the 970, so as you didn't get that benefit, I can see why you may feel underwhelmed.

I agree, it does sound like your PC has issues somewhere else. Have you tried researching your problem?

the 3930k is better than any 4 cores in the market, just upgrade the bios if you have not done so, to get PCI3 2x16lanes at pci3 I also got one for testing and can see the difference it made with BF1 with my 2xgtx970. Then you need to get the unofficial nvidia file to make it work. I would go for a 1060 3gb if I were you. More or less same price

I got this originally from eBay currys store at £179 - when it dropped to £174 I complained as it was still in transit and they refunded difference, I had also previously asked the questions as to was this the overclocked version and they said yes, but it is not. I am not getting a further 10% parital refund @£17.40. so £156.60 - I genuinely wanted the OC version but its too late now and seems worth it at that price.
