A very powerful router, could be a overkill for most people but the price is one of the lowest I have ever seen on Amazon.
For me a deal maker is Dual WAN (redundancy or double speed-via 3rd part firmware).

I have this one, got it for 120 eur from Amazon.fr on a lightning deal (yes, 120eur). Its a great router, but it is pointless to have dual 5ghz for home use. Just marketing to increase the number and sell it for more money. Ignoring the price its a very good peoduct.

also you only get access to the higher 5GHZ bandwidth by changing your region, then some devices wont connect to the higher bands...
plus the smart connect on these routers are rubbish

87u seemed the better router fire a normal house as it claimed faster speeds on true Terri networks instead of 3 slower points

I disagree.
87u use a quadro antenna, the router is not stable and the issue has not been resolved.

I have one of these, bought at a much higher price than this. Worth every penny and very happy with it.
Rock solid for 6 months. Blisteringly fast wireless speeds.
Also, most of the reviews are wrong - you can wall mount it easily.

The Asus RT AC68U has also gone down in price to £119.99 today which is probably the lowest it's been on Amazon UK - still a great step up from any ISP router but £40 less than this model

So what are the benefits of a "custom" router over my standard Sky Hub?
OrribleHarry to Thenewguy01
3 Sep 16#38
Many benefits such higher wireless speed, longer range. Plus has built in VPN server allows you to connect back home from anywhere in the world. You can set it up as a whole house vpn client to increase security and bypass blocked content. You can set it up as a DLNA or file server by plugging in a HDD. You could use Internet filtering for the kids etc etc the list goes on and on.

You have better control over the settings, can setup VPN, attach USB drive for network storage, BitTorrent on the router...etc.

I don't know how good or bad the sky router is. For me I'm with Virgin and put the virgin superhub in modem mode, using the Asus as router and for wi fi
Asus (AC68U in my case) has separate chips for routing and each wi-fi circuit (2.4 and 5ghz) so is a much higher spec piece of hardware than a free ISP router. We have several wired PS4's and lots of tablets / phones, as well as TVs / chromecast etc using YouTube etc. The Super hub had poor wi-fi, needed rebooting regularly etc. I figured that I was paying for a virgin 150 service but that router was by far the weakest link - since using a more expensive router we have internal wi-fi and network speeds that are as fast or faster than our internet connection that supports lots of devices without a performance hit
If you live in a flat or smaller house with only a couple of users/devices with a lowish internet speed an ISP router may be fine. For us the step up to a better router was well worth it

Excuse my ignorance, but can you just plug this in to your broadband in place of your providers router?
fishmaster to wilf1234
2 Sep 16#22
That entirely depends on your provider, if it's Sky then you'll need to use Wireshark to packet sniff the user/password from the router. The simple answer is as long as you have your broadband username and password you can do it. This is NOT the information printed on the router, it has nothing to do with the wifi password etc.

Usually you can. It is not a modem router though so you will need a DSL modem or cable modem also.

Hmmm, I like to minimise the amount of box clutter. Cant understand why they don't boost up the combined modem/router ranges. I have the AC1900 variant of this that cost pretty much the same. Good modem/router unit with very good wireless range.

I've got the 87u with Merlin firmware. Rock solid and was used with Virgin Media with the hub in modem mode and now with BT Infinity with an Openreach HG612 unlocked modem. This is probably overkill, but a great price for what it is.

Have 87u with stock firmware, not had an issue either... Was cheaper than this router. Disregarding the quattro antenna issue (not sure what that is).... the on paper specs for the 2 channel solution was supposed to have better speed than this with 3 channels.

87u = 600 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band -1734 Mbps (5GHz)
Basically the AC3200 has 2 seperate 5GhZ networks allowing you to connect even more devices... When I assess this I looked at how many devices I needed to connect then went for the 87U as it seemed to have a better signal/speeed (1.7 GBps vs 1.3 GBps) on the 5 GhZ network.

Although a lower ac spec, unless your running a lot of devices, you'll get better performace with something like a Linksys WRT1900ACS with 512MB Ram, 128Mb Flash.

~£80 board plus £125 AP (apologies if the boards are available cheaply - just punted it into google, definitely wouldn't turn one down but that's not cheap), still clocks out £40 dearer than this and is a less friendly package.
Do want to get some unifi gear going soon, but don't really need it. Heard the handover's excellent between APs, and while their routing/switching/etc gear might not be fantastic and the wifi stuff might not scale well, at the lower end (1-500 users) it's proper good value.

I used to have 3 x access points, connected by powerline networking, to support a medium size detached home.
I now have this single device, centrally positioned, in the home and have very fast wireless coverage everywhere.

For anyone who has an Asus router, make sure you have the latest firmware update as there is a security exploit which needs to be closed.
There have been 5 updates just this year for mine ! Updating is as easy as logging into the router, and there should be an Exclamation mark flashing yellow top left which tells you an update is available, just click on it, and allow it to update itself.
Always good practice to run the latest firmware especially when it contains a number of security updates.

I have a RT-AC68U and the dual wan redundancy does not work despite the feature existing. Perhaps the 3rd party firmware helps. The RT-AC3200 will have much faster wireless performance than a Sky Hub and better range. Though speed will be dependent on your devices or network cards have AC functionality rather than B/G or N. You can use with the Sky Hub by connecting via cable and switching the Sky Hub wireless off to reduce interference.

If you don't have enough budget, there're plenty other combinations for these two brands. e.g. RB951G-2HND (disable the WIFI) + Unifi AP-AC-lite, which should cost around £150 as well and much more powerful. Of course, you get what you pay for. I'm currently using a CCR1036 + Unifi AP-AC-Pro with an unmanaged 48-port switch. Have nothing to complain at all. But router from Asus, meh. It's only good if you don't need anything powerful.

It obviously can't perform miracles but previously I needed previous APs near to my Google Chromecast devices as the Wi-Fi wasn't sufficiently fast enough to allow good streaming to multiple rooms.
Now I can stream as much as I like without interruption.
