This is possibly the worst value Apple product. I get that it's a very high end machine, so doesn't come cheap but it's not had a processor upgrade in 3 years. It uses a 4th Gen i7... the 7th Gen is due out by Christmas.

Have it for almost a week to replace my 2011 MBA (1.7GHz,13", 4GB), even though this 2014 version is 1.4GHz but the video card has so much more memory which it runs much quieter without the fan on all the time when watching video. I love it, and it is a great price too!

Discount doesn't apply for goods that are clearance. Price match and Special order stuff (ie new stuff they bring in for sales) is fine to discount.

Yes that's why I said an XPS is more comparable to a Macbook Pro Retina
kristmace
25 Sep 16 #141
It is double the price... but with double the RAM, double the SSD size, a 6th gen processor instead of a 5th gen, an i7 instead of an i5 and 1920x1080 resolution instead of 1440x900.

I think the OP is a good deal and voted hot, but the XPS13 is in another league in terms of price an spec.

Livid, John Lewis May or May not have lost my order during Transit for Click & Collect to my local store... They have to Investigate as It'll be the 3rd Day tomorrow as It was Expected to be Picked up by Friday at 2pm. No one contacted me about it so I'm not happy with the poor service. Rang up demanded to speak to a manager after being told "We'll look into it" So basically the Deliver Driver has either stolen it or John Lewis Staff have decided to take It for themselves on to of their discount. I said I wasn't happy with a Refund & I want a MacBook Air or equivalent MacBook as they can't replace it as It's Out Of Stock obviously. Hmmm.

Just a heads up regarding the warranty. I have had one of these for over a year and like it but rarely use it. My power adapter recently stopped working so contacted John Lewis (I have 3 yr warranty) to be told that they don't cover the power adaptor in the warranty. I was quite surprised by this as the power cord was supplied with the MacBook in the same box. Apparently not as it's classed as a consumable. :disappointed:

I've used a MacBook Air 13 and a recent XPS 13 and the XPS has a more premium build quality with much better components as well especially the screen.
I liked the Air, a good basic design but old specs, but the O/S is not for me.
They are both good but different and neither are inexpensive.

there is something called product design. and that's where Apple beats every single competitor.
If you have ever thought about the Dell copycat XPS, or the ASUS ones, you would be amazed how ugly they are, if put next to a macbook.

BMW Mercedes and Volkswagen are overpriced piece of rubbish. Citroen will take you from A to B as good as BMW. So why people buying crappy overpriced cars?
Because they like them. They like design looks and prestige. It's the same with everything. Why people buying Panadol instead of non branded paracetamol?
I have Mac and never had to uninstall the system. Nothing is slowing down after few years of use. It's most stable desktop computer I ever had.
And I do drive Citroen. Newish tho.

I'm basing my comment on German cars from conversations with friend who ownes a garage and he says that those brands brings him most money he makes.

Uridium
22 Sep 16 1 #115
i wouldn't say a 10hr battery life and low weight are purely aesthetics considerations...for anyone that carries a notebook around a lot I'd say they are prime purchasing considerations...

I see all 10 gone and deal expired. 10 lucky buyers got a great bargain. Can use that Macbook Air for a year and sell on for an upgrade and will probably get the purchase price back.
m5rcc
22 Sep 16 #114
I don't see value in buying a machine that is hardly upgradable. Not everyone needs a machine for aesthetic purposes.

22 Sep 16 1 #113

Asus Zenbook maybe? https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Zenbook-UX310UA-FC075T-13-3-Inch-Notebook/dp/B01HIWOTGS/

Because that is typically the main difference. Many of the components are not exclusive to Apple.
Uridium
22 Sep 16 1 #111
you seem hung up with the MACOS vs Windows thing....it's just an OS..I have machines running many different OS's..To many people when buying a Mac it's the underlying hardware that counts...not just the numbers either...for me it's a combination of materials, build quality, battery life, weight and reliability...and no-one else is yet selling a Windows laptop that competes..(the latest HP spectre's are close but then the cost is comparitive to a Macbook)
m5rcc
22 Sep 16 #110
Disagree. I don't see a 4th gen 1.4Ghz i5 with 4GB un-upgradable RAM and a 128GB SSD costing £549 for a Windows equivalent.
m5rcc
22 Sep 16 #109
But you suggested that you could buy a Mac but run boot-camped Windows and never need to use MacOS. Why would you do that?
Uridium
22 Sep 16 1 #108
you pay the premium for the hardware build quality...A windows laptop built with the same materials will cost you the same.
m5rcc
22 Sep 16 #107
What is premium about Mac OS?
PulseTurbo
22 Sep 16 1 #106
In my case, it's because there were multiple reasons for buying the Mac, not just one.

1. At the time of buying mine, there was nothing with the build quality out there on the market. I will caveat that with the fact I've not checked the marketplace since.
2. The Mac OS was (for me) far superior to Windows for my needs.
3. Design plays an important factor for me (personally I care about how something looks), and it was the best looking laptop by a country mile when I got mine. Same caveat applies per item 1.

There were a number of things which drew me to the Mac. All small in their own little way, but making up an altogether great package.
Uridium
22 Sep 16 1 #105
MAC OS is only available on purchased Mac's, a premium product that carries a premium price....Windows comes pre-installed on £100 Netbooks....
with the volume of PC's shipped day in day out with windows pre-installed MAC OS is never going to compete in those numbers...
coolcraig999

m5rcc
22 Sep 16 #101
I'm talking about desktop OSs not PCs. Mac OS has been out long enough to do something about that percentage, no?
Uridium
22 Sep 16 1 #100
Yes...it's because it comes preinstalled on almost every PC...
Don't get me wrong I like Windows (I support thousands of windows servers as a day job)
But not everyone wants to use Windows...yes there is Linux but if you want a polished Desktop OS then MAcOS is a good OS to use....
btw...I'm no windows hater either.....I have 9 machines in my home running Windows OS's of some description, 7 Physical, 2 Virtual. I have 3 machines running MacOS, 2 Physical, 1 Virtual

Both OS'es have their pro's and cons but my personal choice for the best combination of quality hardware and software together is my Macbook Pro...I looked at all the windows based ultrabook options when i bought it (Dell XPS/Lenovo X1/HP Spectre and when specced to the same level they were all within a few ££'s of the Macbook yet none offered quite the complete package the Macbook did.
£549 for an entry level Macbook with 3yrs warranty is an amazing price..I'd vote hot twice If I could

Two primary reasons:

1. People don't like change.
2. Many enterprise-based applications are built upon the Windows OS.

The same doesn't apply for home users, who typically just use their laptops to access the internet (let's be honest).

Even if you want many of the common applications, they are cross platform now - Microsoft Office, Photoshop, etc.

Yeah and that reason is "shady business practices" haha. There's a lot of gamers who'd make the switch if devs would pull their finger out with games on Linux, it's happening slowly and Steam on Linux helps a lot.

End of the day a Unix terminal is way more powerful than anything Microsoft have ever pumped out. You get that out the box with a Mac, one of the reasons they're popular in the dev community.

Take iTunes. One meticulously imports their whole discography, adds all the correct album covers and names each song correctly. Then you happen to have your Mac break down (yes it does happen Apple fanbois) or have your iPod stolen and you wish to export the meticulously done work to a new iPod. You read the Apple instructions carefully and yet it still screws up, renames the songs to either "song 1" or "song 2", all because of an umpteenth update that was probably never needed.

Not only that, some software is just not compatible on Macs. Don't see financial traders using them...

Thank you for your opinion. I have used Macs and I don't like them. I do "get them" but they are incompatible with a lot of what I do and they attempt to force you down a path I don't wish to go down through.

However, as much as I admire Apple for ripping people off, they are the modern-day pioneers of planned obsolescence. Instead of needing new goods because our old ones were broken, Apple have managed to get (some) people to want them for reasons of fashion and aspiration - awaking a consumer appetite that could never be satisfied.

Great price if you want a MBA...Will still be worth this in 12mths time. rarley you see an entry level Macbook at this price

Personally i think the MBA is heading for removal from the product line. The new 12" Macbook is a smaller lighter product and the Retina Macbook pro isn't much bigger in size now than the Macbook air and offers a lot more performance.

I see thread is filling up with Mac hating comments already by those who've never used one and just simply 'Don't get Mac's'

I disagree with the 128gb thing too, my MacBook's are 512gb and 256gb, but it wouldn't be a big problem if they were just 128 really. macOS (formerly OS X ) only takes up around 15gb, not around 40gb as you claim.

New cars actually, very successfully, and yeah, I do okay

You might survive with just 4GB RAM, but it's upgradeable.
128GB SSD is also a limitation as you only really get 90GB or so for apps and photos and music and document and maybe 1 movie at best. You can expand it with a tiny USB drive but it will be much slower and not too elegant.
Honestly at this price it's not a budget offering anyway so get a better model or something really cheap instead like a refurb Lenovo business laptop for £199

Why not, one of my Macs is a £1,049 netbook

I absolutely love it, I have a MacBook Pro Retina too though, for more serious stuff.

I agree with your first half of the sentence on your original comment.
It's overpriced, especially considering the lame screen resolution.
However, you did say "like all Apple product", which is the sentence I was questioning.
m5rcc
22 Sep 16 1 #6
Still overpriced, like all Apple products.

Do remember why Apple are sitting on cash pile of $216bn and struggling to think what to do with it...
chenzz to m5rcc
22 Sep 16 2 #8
Overpriced? How?
Have a look at Lenovo T450, or Dell Precision, any brand targetting business/creation industry
you will be surprised how cheap Macbook is.
Ruffuz to m5rcc
22 Sep 16 1 #10
not really, this is really good price wether you like Apple or not

22 Sep 16 3 #14
As an Apple user for the past 26 years, I still wouldn't buy one of these. Far too slow and you could get a much faster PC laptop for the price.

Looks nice though! And if you got the cash to waste and prefer looks over substance - go for it!

Heat Added!

This is a discontinued model that came out in early 2014. So yes it is definitely overpriced for an i5 1.4Ghz with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. The T450 will have better specs.
ezzer72
22 Sep 16 #12
Sorry, my bad, you are correct about the ram.

Processor and graphics though, meh.

4GB is plenty for this, they are used as a 'netbook' really, and it certainly isn't worth paying hundreds more for another 4GB.

just be warned.

Id normally agree but not in this case. Please could you provide a link to a similarly specc'ed, well constructed ultrabook with 3 year warranty?

Fantastic deal, I'm not a big fan of the Air, but this has to be the best price ever for a brand new, well warrantied MacBook. Massive heat OP, good find.
