Windows 10 insanely efficient with RAM. There have been many 1GB devices which can run Windows 10 fine, with basic desktop apps. 4GB is fine for 'average joe' users.
Windows 8 onwards use some quite advanced RAM caching. It will often look like much higher utilization than it actually needs.
I have 32GB installed in this machine, but Windows 10 has 11.7GB of that filled with cache data (Good!).
To be honest, and with the utmost respect, if you're comparing Windows and a Phone OS when it comes to RAM usage, you don't understand this stuff. They are vastly different beasts.

The fact you've got that a pretty reasonable spec. laptop running nothing yet using 4.5GB RAM suggest you no nothing about computers or you would have sorted out what's taking the ram by now. My i7 XPS machine is currently running Visual Studio, SQL Server, about 20 tabs in Firefox, Outlook, Photoshop editing 5 hi definition photograhs, Plex, Calculator, Skype and half a doze utilities and I'm only using half a gig more than your machine.

Just to add to this comment. MS consumer support is absolutely terrible! their corporate support however is on a different level.
The bad MS Support is something you need to consider if this device was to ever need a warranty claim the turn around time is long. This however is different with the manufacture and quality of the device which is pretty good

There are more Battery issues with the Surface Pro 3, now with the LG Batteries this week (previously it was simplo batteries). £600+ is a fair amount to pay for a sealed device, with a life of 4 years. It's something to think about when purchasing a Surface Pro 4.
Microsoft are still playing this game that the Battery can be fixed using a software fix. Technically Possible (if it was preplanned), but its very unlikely.
You don't fix batteries with a software fix, unless you have previously understated it performance, and then overtime adjust its perceived capacitiy to its actual capacity to take into account how Lithium-ion batteries deteriorate due to charging cycles. This is what Apple do, to give you an 80% capacity over 1000 cycles. The Surface is not an Arm Device, where leaving a bit of headroom on the Battery capacity would be possible.
Its a high drain device, which puts strain on Lithium-ion batteries. I think Microsoft are playing for time, to push claims outside the guarantee period, it needs a physical battery replacement, which is pretty much impossible to do, on Surface Tablets.
The only plus point would be if you're not paying for the Surface out of your own Pocket, then its not an issue.

No offence, you're just wrong. I bought it from the Microsoft store where their ad stated about the upgrade.

Microsoft, so cold from me.
Microsoft customer service is incredibly bad. Bought a tablet from them a year ago described on their website as "ready to upgrade to Windows 10" then got laughed at and told I should have bought something better when I called Microsoft for assistance.
Only managed to upgrade due to help of HUKDers.
Tablet then broke, Acer "fixed it" but put win8.1 back on it, and Microsoft's guidance on how to upgrade again has bricked it. Now they're not responding at all.
Probably will have to issue a court claim to get restitution.
Amazing that in this day and age a giant like Microsoft can be so backward.

Complete opppsite experience for me. I contacted them about a single stuck pixel in the bottom left of the screen and they offered to replace it straight away. Most companies don't replace a product for a single pixel, let alone not in a central area.

No offence mate but Acer claimed it would upgrade not MS, Acer let you down not Microsoft, This is Microsoft hardware its a whole different ball game support wise, if you buy cheap (i.e acer) don't expect decent support from them (its acers job to support their products not MS)

Bought the m3 version a few weeks ago for my wife who is doing a university course and needed a "laptop". The only issue we have had is the time to load patches, which does take a noticeably longer time than the desktop i5.
For everything else it is perfect (that said have yet to try image editing). She has taken it to all day workshops without power issues (thought not in use 100% it more "real world").

I have the Surface 3 with only 4gb ram and a very underpowered atom x7. Works perfectly fine for me. I just use it for office and Web browsing and it always feels snappy and responsive. I use my i7 laptop for gaming but that's just too big to cart around everywhere and the battery life is dog egg.

I recently got the i5 4gb and the people saying the ram is an issue have not used one. I was concerned at first, but after running Adobe Photoshop with edge running with a few tabs with no issues, I am no longer worried. currently the best deals for a surface is Very.com you get £100 back on computer purchases over £450, so my i5 cost me around £720 with 12 months to pay it off (pen and keyboard included). Only caution id give you is battery life, there is ways around it but it is a concern, research it for battery tweaks. :sunglasses: you receive £100 credit back in October, don't use quidco or tub.

Your comment makes no sense: modern operating systems have the (RAM not in use is wasted RAM) approach, because why flush it if there is no reason to?
At work they have a few workstations with 128Gb RAM and when these are just sitting idle without a single application open Win10 uses 15-20Gb.

Even though operating systems after Windows 7 are more efficient with ram, there's still this perception that you need to keep doubling the ram every couple of years. Windows 10 runs fine on 4GB ram for normal usage, I've an Atom tablet on Windows 10 with 2GB ram with no performance issues.
Also the comment above about Windows using 4.5GB ram when the machine is idle misunderstands how Windows operating systems from Vista onwards use ram, in XP and older systems the OS would use the ram it needed which meant memory could be being wasted. From Vista onwards, the OS will try to use as much memory as possible to improve performance and then if something else requires more memory it will get released and allocated to that application so you can't judge ram usage looking at what task manager is showing.
