A little bit of tech knowledge is required to understand what I am about to say but anyone with questions on how to I can point you in the right direction.
My receipt for this is add an extra 4gb ram, switch bios to legacy, install Windows 10. Use Launcher for Kodi to change shell so that Steam boots up in big picture mode instead of Windows. Install games cheaply via Steam. Or install Dell Hivemind console interface available from Dell for free.
GTX 750ti (mobile version) is the GPU on this. Not amazing, but will play most games on high settings.
I have the new i7 R2 model which runs a GTX 960 and easily converted from Steam OS to windows etc. Seems like a bargain at this price.

Very good price, but would be surprised if the 750ti mobile edition is capable of playing games on high settings..
But very good price for a system more powerful than the consoles

I gave it a fair try and never was happy with it. My accuracy comment was aimed at the stick and triggers, they just never felt as precise as any Xbox controller I have owned. Each to their own but for me I class it as sub par based on my experience of it compared to dozens of controllers I have had over the years. I personally think mine was a waste of money.

If accuracy is a problem then you are either configuring it wrong, or it's faulty, had no problems with accuracy with any of the ones I've tried and with the gyro touch enabled I generally find it almost as good as a mouse for aiming. And as I mentioned a lot of the feel is just holding it wrong, I've yet to meet anyone who after they corrected how they held it had problems with the placement, for myself my hands are huge and it's almost too small but I can still use it comfortably so you would need exceptionally small hands for it to be akward. And as I said the cheap "feel" is all in your head, it's no cheaper than any other controller and it's material choices are fine from an engineering perspective, some of them are quite a bit more expensive than some of the choices in other controllers and it really is hard to technically fault it.
There are very few games designed for using every key on the keyboard, so far only Elite really does, and you can get a lot more inputs into a steam controller pretty easily by simply setting up key modifiers. Plus it has the advantage of having access to an additional axis which only a PS4 or shield controller also has the available but it's not in an easily used position by comparison.
It's ok not to like it, but personally I'm tired of the people who are in the "too hard, didn't try" category and make nonsense excuses to justify it.

If you like playing FPS games or other games which require a mouse, then a console is useless. I don't care how cheap or powerful they are, no mouse = no buy.

Don't forget some of the parts on this system are mobile spec so not the same performance as their desktop equivalents. I'd personally use a Pentium G3258 anniversary chip which can be easily overclocked to 4.7-4.9ghz on stock fan and many of those prices are partspicker can be beaten by shopping around.

Well the ps4 pro is practically 4k. Scorpio will be 4k and probably will cost £500. But the difference being it will be absolutely top end. My point here is its pretty average for the price. And if you plan on playing top end high spec games, one of the consoles is better.
As a pc gamer I can tell you, for 4k graphics you are looking at at least £300 on a gfx card on its own, and this hybrid console just isn't high spec enough for pc games for more than the next year maximum top end.

It is very cheap in feel and awkward spacing, its accuracy is questionable compared to a One controller which also can be configured now, the config app works with both Elite and standard One controllers. I can see what it tries to do, allowing games designed for a keyboard and mouse to be used on a controller but in games I have tried it falls very short of replacing a keyboard and mouse often with not enough buttons for all controls. Due to the compromises to fit that track pad it then doesn't work as well as say an Xbox controller. In trying to be a jack of all trades it has mastered none in my opinion. If mine broke I would not replace it.
This is of course my opinion but I know I'm not alone in this view.

So limited number of games on Steam OS means you have to pay for an additional Windows licence to then end up with a sub par controller (I have one with Steam Link) and a 3 generation old gpu that wasn't particularly strong when new. As a PC gamer myself Id say buy a console at this price. Not voting either way as it is technically a deal.

Honestly if you think the controller is sub par you really aren't using it right. It's the only controller available you can truly configure to your preference, a little(and I mean a little) investment in time makes it really shine. The build quality is great(the feels cheap is BS, it's perfectly good purely from an engineering perspective), and if it's uncomfortable you just need to use a loose grip rather than a claw of death ala Xbone controllers.

I'd certainly be interested in one of these if they ever pop a GTX 1060 in them but they are certainly a great bit of kit heated

Too much heat. The alpha r2 can add an external graphics card. The machine is smaller than a PS4 or xbox. Form factor is outstanding.
At £199.99 would be a bargain but £300 buys a much higher spec normal pc especially if you build it yourself. Love the styling and would be great for under TV use in the living room.

Could you give an example of a £300 custom build that is much higher spec than this? I've had a really hard time even matching this build for £300, http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/nM3FZ8 is the closest I can get

I bought a pc 5 years ago. It's a i5 not a i3, and I have 8GB of memory.
Realistically, if you want to play indie games, and oldish games, the will do the trick. But it's already very outdated, the graphics card is ok but again dated now,
This vs a ps4 pro or xbox scorpion? The consoles will **** all over this. Both will be 4k(as good as 4k anyway) what you can't do on pc for less than a fortune.
This will not play most new games on high spec.

I've two Alienware Alphas and both my i3 and i5 versions came with Windows (8.1 but upgraded to 10) as well as being able to log into a Steam 'user' (the actual Steam OS wasn't on them).
I upgraded the ram and stuck an ssd in both and they're working well for me. I don't actually play any games at such a high graphics level that would be beyond the Alphas (just restarted World of Warcraft which isn't demanding at all).
Personally I see it as a negative thing for them to remove Windows from it. I know people can get their own versions to install but as a disabled person it would be an annoyance I could do without. Quite possibly would have passed on them without Windows as I use mine as a normal pc most of the time anyway.

Why switch BIOS to legacy? I don't understand: if you keep UEFI then it adds a certain level of security (certs will prevent OS being tampered with, should offer moire protection against rootkits etc, nothing is foolproof anyway but safer than BIOS)

Depends on the games. Most indie titles are a LOT less demanding than AAA games and at least as it comes on Steam OS, many of the available titles are typically older titles that have been ported to work with it being Linux based, so within the limits of the OS it's probably fine. If you installed Windows 10 and tried to play the latest releases it would probably slow down a bit...
